Weird injuries from food

Last night I stabbed the roof of my mouth with a Dorito. It was bleeding for a good while and is still bloody sore this morning when I eat anything! Has anyone ever done that before? It's my first time being injured by a crisp 😂

What weird food injuries have you had?

@Ostryga

Took all the skin off the inside of my mouth after eating a whole bag of Co-op Chardonnay vinegar crisps.
Totally worth it though. I love those crisps 😂

Most recently I sliced my finger open while trying to get the wrap of a cucumber, I have also quite badly burnt my foot by spilling hot water on it. Ouch the blister was massive and difficult to wear shoes for a while

whereislittleroo · 20/05/2021 13:04

That chillies one made me tense up involuntarily!

I have 3 brown scars across the middle of my forearm from frequently burning myself getting hot roast chickens in and out of the warmer at an old workplace. I have also nearly slices of the pointer finger on my left hand and thumb tip of my right hand using knives and meat slicers.

My great grandfather once cut the tip clean off his sister's finger. They were given a chocolate bar to share and he was cutting it in half. Apparently she was holding on to more than just her half.

DH made a massive pot of bolognese sauce once, put leftovers in freezer.

then he realised much later that one of the screws holding the handle on the lid had gone missing and it was too late too figure out if it was in the sauce or washed down the drain as the boxes were already frozen solid.
by the time we used the same sauce of course we forgot about it all and I cracked my tooth filling on the screw.

Expensive artisan loaves often seem to have mouth-lacerating crusts.

Choked on a new potato years ago. I honestly thought I was going to die. Even now 26 years later I still can't pop a whole new potato straight in my mouth I have to cut it into tiny pieces first.

Many a steam burn from cutting pita breads open to soon after they've come out the toaster

Plenty a shredded gum or roof of mouth on crusty bread or crisps

And a burnt face eyeball and hand after cooking scrambled eggs in the microwave for someone at work. Took them out to give them a stir and they exploded all all over me.

I've probably also burnt my tongue more times then I care to imagine on hot drinks too. What to someone else is just right is red hot for me. I should really learn my now that when someone says that just take a careful sip first to see if it actually is

A scar on my thumb which still peels back from the scar periodically. Gran had baked ‘proper’ bread. I went to steal a bit and my little 7 year old self nearly took off the top of a thumb.

Patchwork bosom.

Took duck sausages out of the oven and they spontaneously burst. Fat all over said bosom which was encased in a very flimsy pj top. Blisters were impressive. And very nippy.

And two crowns came out with chewing gum.

I also ironed my belly when ironing a shirt. So not food. I ate my body weight in ice cream when I went to get peas to cool it down though.

DH tells a story of when he was in the 6th form at school and they had a Twiglet jousting tournament. It ended with one poor boy getting a Twiglet gash that needed stitches.

Don't play with your food people.

AlCalavicci · 22/05/2021 00:33

I had eaten a packet of Tesco's astro fizzy belts and my mouth was getting a bit sore , I was also really thirsty due to all the sugar so off a toddle to the fridge and guzzle about a quarter of a pint of pineapple juice before the pain hit , que lots of rising my mouth with water

Broke a tooth... on a naan bread Hmm
Filling at the dentist came out two days later when I was eating weetabix
Dentist gave me side eye like I had been eating bricks or something rather than the softest food ever

Donitta · 22/05/2021 00:42

I broke three back teeth on one lousy bit of hard popcorn. Also once had a bowl of microwaved mushy peas explode in my face when I put a spoon in to stir it, my face was a mess and I’m incredibly lucky to have no visible scars.

Was licking out a Cadbury's creme egg and got cramp in my tongue. Fuck that hurt.

I have a mental image of you going at a creme egg like some particularly enthusiastic cunniligus!

mackerella · 22/05/2021 01:20

I poured boiling water down myself while draining a pan of pasta (still not sure how, as I had a colander in the sink). My t shirt held the boiling water in contact with my skin until I could fling it off, but I thought I'd got away unscathed - it was painful but I had no visible marks. Until all the burned skin turned brown a couple of days later, then filled with perfectly splash-shaped blisters. It took ages until the brown skin went back to normal!

I like to eat peanut butter from the jar but have stopped after one time I almost choked on a particularly claggy brand. Tried to swallow a spoon of PB only for it to stick all in my throat into a lump. Cue much coughing and spluttering. Frightening at the time - and also absolutely absurd. Kept thinking 'this would be a ridiculous way to die!!'

Well it put me off ever becoming a lesbian. It also put me off Cadbury's creme eggs!

I accidentally spilt vinegar all over my foot once, it really bloody hurts.

NobodyKnowsTiddlyPom · 22/05/2021 23:09

My most weird food injury has to be when I was wiping up the kitchen table. A tiny bit of Weetabix had dried on the surface (similar colour to the table) and as I swiped my cloth over it, I actually cut my finger open on the Weetabix which was rock hard and really sharp!!). My husband didn’t believe me!

thelightishere · 22/05/2021 23:10

Blister on the roof of my mouth from too-hot cappuccino

BetsyJameson · 22/05/2021 23:29

I love those Co Op Chardonnay vinegar crisps!

After eating a crusty baguette I thought the inside of my cheek felt funny and when I checked I had a huge black blood blister which was so sore when it burst.

Kona84 · 22/05/2021 23:51

Aged 6 or 7 was served fish in parsley sauce (that boil in a bag stuff) a spring of parsley speared under my tongue (didn’t know that until later) Couldn’t stop coughing, it tickled so much at one point I was struggling to breathe.
My mum actually took me to a&e thinking I had choked on a fishbone.
The doctor extracted the parsley and all was good.

Couple of years later watching duck wittington in the theatre- had a pineapple ice lolly - it had real pieces in. A spiky bit of pineapple got lodged under my tongue. Had to leave theatre coughing so much my mum did her own extraction that time.

Kona84 · 22/05/2021 23:53

Oh I once choked on an ice cube at my nans house.
I was panicking and couldn’t breathe and my grandad just sat watching and told my nan not to fuss that it would melt in a minute.
It did and I was fine but it was super scary and I never really had the same bond with my grandad after that

OhWhyNot · 22/05/2021 23:58

I scalded my face when I took a bite from a toasted pita and the steam burnt me

It took a while to heal and was constantly asked what I had done

StressMagnet · 23/05/2021 00:07

Bratwurst with cheese inside at a Christmas market. Molton cheese burnt my lip and chin. I had blisters for a week or so. They are lethal but I still cant resist them

WhipperSnapperSteve · 23/05/2021 00:08

Broke my tooth on a cashew nut Sad

Rememberallball · 23/05/2021 13:18

Broke a tooth on a Waitrose chunky fish finger - wasn’t even hard, just managed to take the whole side of the tooth off; eventually had to have the tooth taken out in hospital because dentist couldn’t extract it (almost an hour of pulling which gave me an abscess) because of a hooked root so ended up with more than just the original injury to deal with.

Cut my finger on a knife trying to slice bread as a young child (think about 6 years old) as I was hungry but didn’t want to disturb my parents. Still got the scar more than 40 years later.

Cutting a cauliflower ready to cook and the knife slipped cutting into my hand in the fleshy part by my thumb; took about 4 weeks to heal properly.

Another childhood one, playing in the garden and didn’t realise that a flask I was using in the game had hot liquid in it. I unscrewed the bottom of the flask and spilled hot water all over my legs and skirt scalding my leg and, as the skirt I was wearing had thick ridges on it, I had ridges in the scald. Took weeks for the skin to go back to normal
