Weird injuries from food

Last night I stabbed the roof of my mouth with a Dorito. It was bleeding for a good while and is still bloody sore this morning when I eat anything! Has anyone ever done that before? It's my first time being injured by a crisp 😂

What weird food injuries have you had?

Cut my lip on a gluten free pizza crust and scalded my face with hot oil throwing some frozen stir fry veg into the wok.

SpringLoadedJizz · 19/05/2021 15:03

I'm incredibly accident prone and even more so when hot things are involved.

I'm another who's had a pizza burn. I bit into it and the sauce and cheese was so hot I took the slice out my mouth again and the cheese slid off and burnt my boob. I make sure not to wear low cut tops while eating pizza now. Blush

I've also stabbed a knife right into my palm while trying to destone an avocado, splashed hot oil down my leg (jeans saved me apart from two splashes on my foot), and been a victim to a too-hot jam tart as a child too.

My worst burn ever though was when I forgot to put an oven glove on and took a hot tray out of the oven. I was halfway across the kitchen before I even realised. Thankfully it was my left hand and I'm right handed as I couldn't use it for a while afterwards.

@JackieTheFart I'm still mourning the loss of it, although I had contemplated taking it out for ages (as a middle aged mother probably a bit unbecoming!)
It truly was a part of me sigh

bigbeatmanifesto · 19/05/2021 15:40

Like a previous comment Ive also choked on a Dorito pretty badly I bit into a circular shape and was joking with my friend that it would probably taste better as a circle placed it on my tongue like communion bread and somehow it just slipped to the back of my throat became completely lodged my airway it was just wedged there my friend though I was joking until I started to wheeze, and go a funny colour then she started screaming. I ended up needing the heimlich manoeuvre to dislodge it, very scary at the time but I still finished the pack of Doritos Grin

DadsTrilby · 19/05/2021 15:43

I have a scar on my wrist from cutting a butternut squash when the knife slipped.
And a scar on my arm from when the filling of a hot spring roll landed on it.

While I'm here I've just been reminded my I was sat with my mums friend on a flight to Turkey about 8 years ago & she bit into a bread roll, I heard a loud crunch looked at her and she immediately began crying, it had taken 2 of her teeth CLEAN OUT! I laughed so much I couldn't even breathe she just sat in stunned silence for the rest of the flight, had a full 2 week holiday before she could return home and see her dentist. She had awful luck on that holiday and came home with quite a few minor injuries.

Soubriquet · 19/05/2021 15:59

My dd nearly choked on a crisps when she was a toddler

It was even a soft squishy crisps but she had sucked it to the point where it had gotten stuck at the back of her throat

Had to lay her across my lap and slap her on the back to dislodge it

EBearhug · 19/05/2021 16:03

My tongue peeled after a surfeit of Wasabi peas. I've only had about 5 wasabi peas in the years since.

Notsoaccidentproneanymore · 19/05/2021 16:08

Broke a tooth on overcooked Linda McCartney sausage.

sueelleker · 19/05/2021 16:13

@LagneyandCasey

Cracked my tooth on a hard piece of popcorn. Luckily I only needed a small filling. I haven't eaten popcorn since. Evil stuff!
Cracked the side off a molar eating pork scratchings. Never touched them since.
GreenFlamingo11 · 19/05/2021 16:46

These M&S crisps always give me weird cuts on the inside of my cheek, but only ever on the left side.
Chipped the corner off my molar on an unpopped popcorn kernel a few years back.
Burned the top of my mouth really badly with some soup too, the blister was impressive!

DD choked on a lollipop aged about 3 - it had come off its stick and stuck in her throat. I whacked her on the back and it shot out of her open (gasping) mouth.

She was completely unphased and wanted to put it back in her mouth, so I hit it with a hammer to break it into small pieces that she could have without risk.

She then went through a phase of wanting me to hit all sorts of different (unnecessary) food with a hammer and would have a tantrum if I refused... Grin happy days!

thistimelastweek · 19/05/2021 17:40

Broke a tooth on a fruit gum. I needed a crown and a root-filling that costs hundreds.

The most expensive fruit gum ever.

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 19/05/2021 17:43

Was licking out a Cadbury's creme egg and got cramp in my tongue. Fuck that hurt.

Is it terrible that I laughed? I've never heard of anyone getting cramp in their tongue.

PieElla · 19/05/2021 17:47

Drank a flaming sambucca whilst it was still err flaming.

MumofSpud · 19/05/2021 17:49

Was licking out a Cadbury's creme egg and got cramp in my tongue. Fuck that hurt.

Ate three packets of monster munch pickled onion in a row. The next day the entire lining of my mouth peeled off!

How long did it take you to lick out?! I am so greedy I will never get cramp in my tongue !!Grin
halfhope · 19/05/2021 17:54

Bit my lip while eating pasta and needed minor surgery

Thebookswereherfriends · 19/05/2021 17:54

Broke a tooth on the crust of my sourdough toast! I don’t eat sourdough anymore.

MumofSpud · 19/05/2021 17:54
@HitsAndMrs Thankfully DH happened to be standing right beside me, so when I realised it was stuck I gestured for him to hit me on the back, which he did. Nothing. I shook my head and he did it again - still nothing. He sprang into action, leaned me over the sink and performed the Heimlich several times. After about a minute of this I vaguely heard DS come down to see what the commotion was about, DH screamed at him to run and get a neighbour to help - while I was just thinking, "gosh, it's a really long time since I've breathed, I suppose at some point I'll just pass out" - then I lost consciousness.

Meanwhile, a truly wonderful neighbour (who coincidentally had good military medical training) appeared, got DH to call 999 and he laid me on the floor - I don't know what he actually did but I know he apologised afterwards for being 'so rough' Shock... if he wasn't I would have died as it took the ambulance another 8 minutes to arrive.

It deep traumatised my family though, and triggered a huge eating issue/phobia of swallowing in DS (CBT helped that though Smile)

Apparently marshmallows are one of the main causes of choking in adults Hmm - they're like 'uncut grapes for adults' according to the paramedic!
Glad to hear you were ok in the end! I have a fear of choking after seeing my DB choking on a sandwich when he was little.
It affected me when I had my own DC and their eating (cut up their grapes til they were well in their teens etc Shock) but I never had any CBT Sad

drinkingwineoutofamug · 19/05/2021 18:01

@Retrievemysanity

Please more info
Ihatesandwiches · 19/05/2021 18:39

As a barmaid I dropped a pint glass on the bar and it broke and bits bounced back up. One bit cut my wrist. Boss gave me an elastoplast. My whole sleeve from cuff to elbow was red from the blood seeping out. Eventually when one customer complained there was blood on the head of his guiness I was given taxi money to go to the hospital where I had stitches! Still have the scar, 25 years on...

MrsPinkCock · 19/05/2021 18:56

My tooth broke on some saltwater taffy... it’s soft and chewy so god knows how!

A friend of mine ended up splitting his tonsil on a crisp and had to go to hospital because blood was pouring out 🤢

Two work ones - one personal injury claim at a firm that I worked at. Client successfully sued a large supermarket chain because one of those cook in the bag chickens had a hole in the bag which dripped hot fat onto his legs and burned him. He enjoyed the “pain, suffering and loss of amenity” payment, considering he was paralysed from the waist down and couldn’t actually feel a thing!

And here’s the best one!... Also a personal injury client - a chap who sued his employer, Cadbury, after he fell into a vat of chocolate, knocked himself out and nearly drowned Grin

I couldn’t help but think there would be worse ways to go!

CobraKaiRocks · 19/05/2021 18:59

Heat burn from a pitta bread - was micro waving it for 30 seconds to “ open “ and “ loosen “ the pocket so I could use it to scoop chilli inside.
Took it out of microwave while it was puffed right up and it deflated on me and all the steam or hot air really scalded my hand Blush

FiveGs · 19/05/2021 19:11

Eating some salmon and somehow, still unknown to this day, a bone cut through my tongue sideways and I had to have it removed by a doctor!

Peeling cooked prawns, the spiky bits near the head always stab me. It hurts!

Perhaps I should steer clear of fish Confused
