Weird injuries from food

Last night I stabbed the roof of my mouth with a Dorito. It was bleeding for a good while and is still bloody sore this morning when I eat anything! Has anyone ever done that before? It's my first time being injured by a crisp 😂

What weird food injuries have you had?

@idontlikealdi

Cut the roof of my mouth on a sherbet lemon

Burnt the roof of my mouth more times than I care to remember by insisting on eating pizza straight out of the oven. Weirdly satisfying popping the blisters...

I've done that too... I swear a half-sucked sherbet lemon is sharper than glass as it's happened on several occasions... Still love eating them though!

I tried to drink water from the boiling tea making tap at work, instead of the cold tap.

@HitsAndMrs Thankfully DH happened to be standing right beside me, so when I realised it was stuck I gestured for him to hit me on the back, which he did. Nothing. I shook my head and he did it again - still nothing. He sprang into action, leaned me over the sink and performed the Heimlich several times. After about a minute of this I vaguely heard DS come down to see what the commotion was about, DH screamed at him to run and get a neighbour to help - while I was just thinking, "gosh, it's a really long time since I've breathed, I suppose at some point I'll just pass out" - then I lost consciousness.

Meanwhile, a truly wonderful neighbour (who coincidentally had good military medical training) appeared, got DH to call 999 and he laid me on the floor - I don't know what he actually did but I know he apologised afterwards for being 'so rough' Shock... if he wasn't I would have died as it took the ambulance another 8 minutes to arrive.

It deep traumatised my family though, and triggered a huge eating issue/phobia of swallowing in DS (CBT helped that though Smile)

Apparently marshmallows are one of the main causes of choking in adults Hmm - they're like 'uncut grapes for adults' according to the paramedic!

I burnt my foot where I cut into a chicken kiev and the hot garlic butter jumped out and somehow landed on my foot! I’m a bit cautious when cutting into them now

petridishmystery · 19/05/2021 11:50

Wow @Gumbo that’s so scary! Glad you’re alright. I do like marshmallows but think I’ll stick to the mini ones...

Giggorata · 19/05/2021 12:16

Massive deep cut on knuckle when wrestling with a corned beef tin. Blood everywhere.

UmamiMammy · 19/05/2021 12:17

I dropped a large swede on my foot...........it was swollen, bruised and very painful for days!!!

FluffMagnet · 19/05/2021 12:22

I've found my people! I managed to cut my finger on a raw carrot recently (hurt like buggery - a paper cut from a root vegetable, and my family found it hilarious (heartless bastards).

Isababybel · 19/05/2021 12:25

I read about a chef a few years ago that ate a very hot small fishcake and burned his throat so severely that he died Shock i often think about it when eating hot food and get paranoid.
Like other posters i have also burned my mouth on salt and vinegar crisps (m and s ones, not had them in years but miss how amazingly vinegary they were/are).
Also nearly choked to death on a piece of chicken.

@FrankiesKnuckle

My tongue piercing of 25 years suddenly became infected, my tongue swelled up and I had green gunk oozing from the site. I rather reluctantly took the piercing out knowing I'd never get it back in by the time the infection healed. A few days after starting the antibiotics I could feel something sharp in my tongue..... so I went at it with tweezers and pulled out a bit of popcorn skin (the hard stuff) from where my piercing had been - I'd eaten popcorn the night before my piercing had become infected.
OMG as one also with a tongue piercing I’m now going to stay away from popcorn! I already chipped a tooth on an unpopped kernel!

I had to go to hospital to have a twig-like bit of rosemary removed from my throat. It had stabbed itself into the side and was agony.

dancinfeet · 19/05/2021 12:37

Had a tooth removed unexpectedly at the dentist the day before I went away for the weekend. At breakfast in the hotel I thought I would be ok if I stuck to toast and fruit, but managed to get a watermelon seed stuck in the hole where the tooth had been removed. I had to take the lift up 3 floors and get through several locked doors that required the electronic door key to get back to the hotel room before I was able to locate a pair of tweezers in my belongings to remove it from the raw hole in my gum. Probably took me less than 3 minutes but it felt like a lifetime getting back to that hotel room! I then had to go back down again to explain to my friend why I had suddenly legged it out of the dining room and left her there sat by herself!

Toddlerteaplease · 19/05/2021 12:39

@Ostryga they are vicious!

CornishGem1975 · 19/05/2021 12:49

Massive blister on my nose from a splash of fat when I was frying bacon! (I always grill it now!)

CornishGem1975 · 19/05/2021 12:50

That is terrifying @Gumbo!

bedtimestories · 19/05/2021 12:56

Chippes a tooth on a minstrel

YesPleaseMary · 19/05/2021 12:59

Stabbed myself in the palm when attempting to gouge goose fat out of its tub (yes I know I should have melted it, in my defence I was pregnant)

Anothermuddywalk · 19/05/2021 13:13

Took all the skin off my tongue with some very sour sweets - ate far too many of them and then discovered my tongue was peeling....

AmyDudley · 19/05/2021 13:14

I got a splinter in my finger from a pineapple last week - it was from the spiky leaves at the top - they have little thorns on the end of them, it took me ages to get it out.

Another food incident (not an injury just an embarrassment) -when my son was about 3 he picked up a water melon in Sainsbury's and promptly dropped it on the floor where it smashed into many pieces, - the staff were kind though and I didn't have to pay for the watermelon (I did feel obliged to buy one though even though DS had randomly picked it up, I felt I had to pretend I had intended to buy a watermelon)

RaininSummer · 19/05/2021 13:17

I broke a tooth on an almond in my. Jordans cereal.

BanningTheWordNaice · 19/05/2021 13:24

I have a scar on my thumb from opening one of those plastic butter pots you get in hotels as a kid.

Smileandtheworldsmileswithyou · 19/05/2021 13:33

I deeply sliced through three fingers on a tin lid. I’m a teacher and couldn’t write on the board for at least a week as I’m right handed and it was my right hand. So so painful, I thought I was going to pass out so I kind of slid to the floor as blood pumped everywhere. Awful.

Mylittlepony374 · 19/05/2021 13:33

My sister once used a non-applicator tampon after chopping fiery chillies. She obviously hadn't washed her hands well enough in between and the screams were both hilarious and terrifying “my vaginas burning, it's on fire etc". She wanted to lie down and have me pour milk up there but I was having none of it....cool water from removable shower head eventually cooled things down.

newtb · 19/05/2021 13:44

Ripped the side wall off a molar and part of the filling. I'd made my own golden syrup and over concentrated it. Unwilling to let a good thing go to waste I tasted some and it stuck to the tooth....

A colleague liked Toblerone and her dh gave her a giant one for Christmas. She put a whole chunk in her mouth - pissed out of her brains on Christmas day afternoon. Had to go to a+e with a dislocated jaw.

Glittertwins · 19/05/2021 13:46

I thought the burning of my mouth after biting into hot pizza and the resulting blisters were bad enough (I never learn Confused) but that chillies one is making me wince!
