@MissConductUS I do not have your recipe and would certainly like it if you’re so inclined!

Have been chugging through the final couple of days of half term with DS - just as I’m getting into the swing of having him at home, he’s back to school again on Monday. We have had a lovely time though, with lots of bike rides and walks. Yesterday we walked into the village to go to the shop - a 3 mile
round trip, which took us 2 hours Confused We did have to go and inspect the site for the new playground though, try out all the exercise equipment in the same park, have some chats with people we met, and examine many plants so fair enough. At one point I was carrying DS in a piggyback, with all the shopping in my rucksack on my front. We then spent all afternoon watching films because it was raining. Lovely 😊

Prok, we famously had a British government minister, Dennis Howell, who was celebrated for his weather-related powers. His Wikipedia entry explains:

In the last week of August 1976, during Britain's driest summer in over 200 years, he was made Minister for Drought (but nicknamed 'Minister for Rain'). Howell was charged by the Prime Minister with the task of persuading the nation to use less water – and was even ordered by No. 10 to do a rain dance on behalf of the nation. Howell responded by inviting reporters to his home in Moseley, where he revealed he was doing his bit to help water rationing by sharing baths with his wife, Brenda. Days later, heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding, and he was made Minister of Floods. Additionally, during the harsh winter of 1978–1979 he was appointed Minister for Snow.

Hilda Grin I am not as elevated as that. I cover only a small area of Berlin.

theDudesmummy · 05/06/2021 16:42

My DH has spent most of the day making cheese.

MissConductUS · 05/06/2021 16:51

@Spudlet, PM me your email address and I will send you the recipe as a PDF. I have a version of it that I've deAmericanized.

It's going to be really hot here this weekend, about 33-35C both days. So I'm making sun tea on the deck and have hooked up the hose for the front garden as it will need watering later. While I was out there I took a closeup of the rose bush. It periodically envelopes that six foot tall lamp we have that illuminates the front walk and steps down to the driveway.

I talked to the surgical scheduling person and my dishy ortho is taking two weeks holiday after the 4th of July holiday. I can't get it done sooner since DH won't be driving until about the 4th. So it looks like I'm on hold for a while. Sad

Sunbird Silkiecat said its fine for everyone else to have torrential rain but she needs you to provide sun around a metre from our garden door and through the windows for her sunbathing.

DS and I struggle in anything over mid 20s so we definitely don't want any strong heat sent our way. DS said he liked Finland but found their weather too hot when we went in summer (20C-24C) and he said Costa Rica (25-27C) was so hot you could barely stand up. Though he seems to struggle in English temperatures to stand up from the sofa as well, think his natural position is horizontal.

@theDudesmummy

My DH has spent most of the day making cheese.
What sort?
theDudesmummy · 05/06/2021 17:53

Cow's milk hard cheese (he made a very simple softer one earlier in the week, which was his first ever attempt, it is all gone now, it was nice). Today's one has been quite a production, lots of things needed, rennet, a milk thermometer etc, and he has made his own press out of wood and household implements. The next one will be a ewe's milk cheese, whch needs even more palava (calcium carbonate, kosher salt, all sorts of stuff, and of course the ewe's milk, which has arrived already).

mathanxiety · 05/06/2021 20:36

The heat has arrived here. We turned on the AC this morning, having had it on last night in bedrooms. We have window AC units and they're not very effective in the kitchen thanks to the apartment layout, and because the kitchen window is too far from an outlet to make a window unit a safe proposition, I can't put one there. I relay cooled air in with a big fan, and luckily I have an Instant Pot, which saved dinner all last summer, and hopefully will make life livable this summer too.

Dcat spent a little time this morning lounging in the three season porch off the kitchen, but came in and bit me. Hot weather makes her grumpy.

Went out this morning to try to get DD3's passport application processed at the main post office, only to find that you need an appointment. The PO lady asked if we'd like to set one up then and there, which seemed like a good idea, but her PO computer crashed while we were doing it, so she had to move to the next station and get the manager to set up her device and card scanner, close out her previous desk, and we all agreed that trying it online ourselves at home might be a better idea. On the way home we visited the local Farmer's market, a few blocks from home and bought some potted herbs - sage and English thyme, which looked exactly like the 'German thyme' I bought last year. I toyed with the idea of buying some fresh rhubarb but decided I wouldn't be able to cook it any time soon so gave it a pass.

Sunbird24 · 05/06/2021 20:59

@Silkiecats I think you’ll still probably get whatever your local weather forecast says tbh! I haven’t planned a BBQ or a picnic or anything like that, so it’ll probably be fine Grin

Frownette · 05/06/2021 21:54

I think everything has been too eventful for this thread.

Ok, so, I'm supposed to choose someone's hair colour for summer. What d'you reckon? Tangerine? He's a youngster and likes dying his hair. I swear to god every teenage male I meet thinks I'm their mother

Frownette · 05/06/2021 21:59

Ahhh I did think of something dull and unexciting, I'm catching a taxi tomorrow with a punnet of raspberries and a cauliflower. To feed elderly relative. Cauli cheese then raspberries and bio yoghurt. I have a devil of a time getting them to eat.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 05/06/2021 22:06

Cauliflowers enjoy taxi rides, whereas broccoli prefers the bus.

Frownette · 05/06/2021 22:18

Hmm. I was unaware of this Prok but thank you for imparting vegetable travel preferences.

Good grief silkie can't believe what the wabbit gets up to!!!!! Don't ever let it watch who framed roger rabbit, it'll get ideas...

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 05/06/2021 22:27

@MissConductUS any chance I could have the recipe too please? Il pm you my email address. Thanks

I've spent some of today asleep on the couch, then dropped into a friend's house bang in the middle of a row with her husband, who stropped off to bed while friend cried. It's their daughters birthday tomorrow, so currently they aren't speaking. Im starting to make cupcakes tonight and will decorate in the morning. Cat's are due their shower tonight after flea/worm treatments earlier in the week.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 05/06/2021 22:32

notanother - These brownies are really great!

Frownette · 06/06/2021 03:32

I was asked about the weirdest question in the world last night.

I was asking someone why the hell he lived here whilst he was away from his children abroad and he asked me why I lived here and I said because I was born here. It's where I live, England. Oh my god I'm so grateful my father was brilliant and not negligent

Champagneforeveryone · 06/06/2021 11:56

DS and I have taken advantage of DH's church going to eat KFC for breakfast.

I'm such a great parent Grin

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 06/06/2021 12:57

We are having cod today - a rare treat, as fish is expensive and environmentally questionable, but it is one of the few things DS will eat.

MissConductUS · 06/06/2021 13:12

@Frownette, I think the teenager who wants your advice might fancy you a bit. Smile

@NotanotherboxofFrogs, I've emailed you the recipe.

@Champagneforeveryone, we had fried chicken sandwiches from Popeye's yesterday. I like them better than KFC's. Chicken sandwiches are the new burgers here.

It'll be another really hot day here today.

I did a whole day of gardening yesterday, or as I like to call it ‘outdoor housework’. I loathe gardening. The garden looks much better now though, which is a Good Thing.
Today I am refusing to garden, even though there are still a few jobs to do.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 06/06/2021 15:44

I've put a reminder in my mobile to check for aphids? (Blattläuse) every morning and evening. DS tells me they have a very interesting life cycle - but not on my plants.

Champagneforeveryone · 06/06/2021 16:55

helena you need someone like DS.

He has what I think would actually be described as a "side hustle" where he works for various widowed ladies in the village. Basically they do the fun stuff and he does the boring, laborious donkey work that they don't want to or can't do. He's no gardener but can do anything that his little old ladies ask him.
I have suggested that being a bit more toned and also topless might increase his appeal, but I'm reliably informed that's shallow Wink

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 06/06/2021 17:42

Thank you @MissConductUS, I'm going to make the brownies at the weekend. My DP is coming for the weekend so definitely. 😃

I've sat outside all day, now on the sofa and thinking about teatime

Silkiecats · 06/06/2021 19:11

DH has just announced he is going on a walk and as part of his walk he will be going to the supermarket at the end, this will take him an hour I am told.

I have been very sleepy today, took anti-histamine for the first time in ages yesterday and today and seems to have knocked me out. But skin isn't itching.

Had roast lamb for lunch followed by chocolate truffle cheesecake and also had some custard cream biscuits.
