Snobbiest places in the UK?

Following from similar threads about overrated and underrated places in the UK... where are the snobbiest places in the UK?

From the places I've been, I'd say Harrogate, Oxford, and the rest of the Cotswolds.

OP posts:

Tunbridge Wells

Paradoxicaldichotomy · 15/05/2021 21:30

Oxford without a doubt

YY to Holt! The rest of the north Norfolk coast is very posh but at least they’re generally nice. But Holt always seems to be full of folk who couldn’t smile if their lives depended on it.

MistyMinge2 · 15/05/2021 21:31

Salcombe
Farnham
Sherborne
Tetbury
Rock
Bruton

ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun · 15/05/2021 21:31

Yes to Solihull. Especially when you've dragged yourself out of one of East Birmingham's more interesting suburbs and landed there. But the proper Silhillian's too!

@FuzzyPuffling

Goudhurst, Kent.
@FuzzyPuffling tell me more about Goudhurst.

Re Oxford, I don’t recognise Oxford as particularly snobby at all but then my connection is working in Healthcare rather than a university connection so perhaps I missed something? I always found it friendly and loved the atmosphere the university gives it; lots going on.

Bourton on the Water. The Venice of the cotswolds, allegedly Hmm

herecomesthesunagain · 15/05/2021 21:35

What a mean spirited thread.

I'd like to nominate the most inverse snobbiest place in the UK.

MN

Wink

Or we could just try to get along with others of different backgrounds to ourselves?

@Killergigglebunnies

I’m cracking up at Luton being snobby. However, I am a Lutonian working in the next town along (different county) of Harpenden and I can categorically tell you that they are the most snooty, ill mannered, entitled people I have ever met. They’re obsessed with money ‘old money’ ‘new money’ 🤮

What do you think of Wigmore? I think people in the area can be really snotty actually, as the 'proper town' of Luton is the dump, and Wigmore is the 'naice' Luton

@PollyPaintsFlowers

Barnes, SW London - they resisted having a bus route for years as they didn't want the type of people there who relied on buses. Even getting a small Sainsburys local upset some
The No.9 bus started running from Barnes to Liverpool Street in 1914! (Pub quiz question - oh, I've missed pub quizzes)
Atalune · 15/05/2021 21:39

We went on a little bucket and spade holiday when the the children were little and I remember my DS who wa then 4 asking me why there were so many other children callled “Dahling” as all we could hear up and down the petty street and along the beach were big rugby shirted dads and Boden ad mummies calling for their little darlings! Grin

This was salcombe. It’s awfully pleased with itself.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 15/05/2021 21:39

Some of the towns in Cheshire are quite snobby and frequented by those with new money who like to flaunt it (cash, no dash) as opposed to old money. Hale, Wilmslow, and Alderly Edge are a few that come to mind. Lots of Chelsea tractors in these areas and examples of terrible, selfish parking.....

Having said the above, I do find that on the whole the snobs of the North West tend
to be more friendly and relatable than those of the Home Counties....

LesLavandes · 15/05/2021 21:39

Tunbridge Wells

@amatsip

Horsham, West Sussex, so posh they removed McDonald’s from the town centre as it wasn’t in keeping with the town.
Ooh, this sounds like my kind of place! I hate mcdonalds.
Jongleurterre · 15/05/2021 21:41

Portmeiron.

Atalune · 15/05/2021 21:41

My town has been mentioned and where I grew up too!

Honestly it’s all in good fun as I have benefitted greatly from the life I was born into. I’d take “snobby” over stabby any day of the week. Wink

Fowey

Travelledtheworld · 15/05/2021 21:43

@EastWestWhosBest@joystir59 Scarborough only seems snobby if you come from Bridlington and then Hornsea and Withernsea are bottom of the hierarchy.

ViciousJackdaw · 15/05/2021 21:44

@ZednotZee

West Kirby.

The only place in Merseyside that sells out of the Daily Fail by 10am.

I see your West Kirby and raise you a Heswall!

Also, Beverley. Market town ten minutes from Hull. Don't dare mention the proximity to Hull though, they do get very offended.

plominoagain · 15/05/2021 21:44

Norwich - far too good to have an incinerator anywhere near them, let’s try and foist as far away but still in the county as they can. West Norfolk didn’t want it either - so they lost. Anyone would think the only place in Norfolk worth living is the sodding Golden Triangle , because the rest of the county is full of peasants ...

NFLwidow · 15/05/2021 21:46

Agree with this! We saw someone busking playing the harp!

ZednotZee · 15/05/2021 21:46

@ViciousJackdaw

I will see your Heswall and add that weirdly and despite being more affluent than both of them, Caldy isn't really snobby at all.

Go figure Confused

runningpram · 15/05/2021 21:47

West Kirby, Hoylake, Heswall etc

Absolute horror at the thought of being tainted by their proximity to Merseyside
