Snobbiest places in the UK?

Following from similar threads about overrated and underrated places in the UK... where are the snobbiest places in the UK?

From the places I've been, I'd say Harrogate, Oxford, and the rest of the Cotswolds.

OP posts:

@phranes I live in Edinburgh....
Definitely not snobby where I live 🤣
I don't think I've experienced anywhere overly snobby. Maybe I'm not visiting the right places 🤔🤣

@Missdotty

I agree with Harrogate. I was once in joules and the shop assistant looked me up and down askance. I was shocked. My clothes were alright, and it was only joules, it wasn't versace. This has never ever happened to me in any other shop in any other town or city. Even in shops which do sell Versace.
Versace? New money- how common and out of place in Harrogate.
Moonwhite · 17/05/2021 21:23

I encountered several of the biggest snobs ever in St Helier.

peppermintpat · 17/05/2021 21:23

@Sickoffamilydrama

Oxford has areas of massive deprivation & when I was a kid was the world hotspot for joy riding hardly snobby!

Although granted the students do sometimes have an element of snobbery about them although I'm sure most aren't.

Still the same today. Areas of wealth cheek by jowl with council estates. I remember the joyriders well back in the 80's.

@Pebbledashery

Bicester Village was full of snobbery.
From the Korean tourists?

What was snobby about Bicester Village?

peppermintpat · 17/05/2021 21:25

Henley on Thames and Sonning. Nobody ever seems happy with their lot.

campion · 17/05/2021 21:26

I love Harrogate. Anywhere with a Bettys is my kind of place.

Beverley was a bit smug last time I visited. Especially the woman in the 4x4 who tried to run us down in the market place.

Snobbiness is in the eye of the beholder and insecurity reveals itself. But I do love that once again on MN the love for old inherited money continues, now that is snobby - bloody lower class fools fall for it - they just love to be ruled by the upper classes and the Tory Party are lapping it up!

Spacecadet58 · 17/05/2021 21:29

How can a place be snobby, it’s people that are snobby and every town has a mix of people. How can the whole of the Cotswolds be snobby for gods sake, it has loads of poverty like most rural areas.
This post just sounds really chippy and is based on superficial impressions of places where people just look at the pretty bits and make massive assumptions.

Rockbird · 17/05/2021 21:30

My part of Surrey hasn't been mentioned so clearly not all of it is snobby.

Daisysway · 17/05/2021 21:38

I find it odd to see Harpenden and Berkhamsted in a lot of posts. I lived in both.. In fact I brought my very first house in Berkhamsted never found it snobby. Harpenden is just a very pleasant place to live...
.

Audreyhelp · 17/05/2021 21:44

Farnham and haslemere . Especially Farnham they all think they have more money than they have .

numberoneson · 17/05/2021 21:49

One of my neighbours enormous farms. So toffee nosed it's laughable.

HalleLouja · 17/05/2021 21:51

@Spanielsarepainless

Another vote for Harpenden, I'm afraid. The residents used to call it a village. I thought anywhere with a Sainsbury's and a branch of most banks was actually a town. I lived there for two years and found it cliquey in the extreme. I have never lived anywhere like it since.
They still call it a village. It definitely isn’t. Some of the loveliest people I know live in Harpenden, but it’s definitely snobby.
BigTrombone · 17/05/2021 21:52

Chorlton cum Hardy? Surely you mean Didsbury? Chorlton’s great!

KindnessCrusader · 17/05/2021 21:54

Disputing Henley! Grin

Serin · 17/05/2021 22:00

I like Surrey (DH is from there) and despite being brought up Northern working class, I love Windsor, Bagshot, Richmond, even Virginia Water. I have never felt out of place there at all. I also like Holt in Norfolk.

I agree with Salcombe but I think it is pipped to the post by Bridport in Dorset, it is unbelievably pretencious. God knows why, its really nothing special but all those wankers walking about with their twee shopping baskets, searching for the perfect piece of cheese or purple sprouting brocolli. I blame Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall.

Fallingrain · 17/05/2021 22:04

Chorlton is similar to bits of East London. Lots of wealthy people trying a bit too hard to be cool and alternative. But I wouldn’t call it snobby. Maybe pretentious. But honestly there are lovely people and not so lovely people everywhere. You just choose your tribe.

Chillychangchoo · 17/05/2021 22:05

@Serin

Yes to Bridport. Utter wankers.

Phoenixrising1 · 17/05/2021 22:07

@Thewinterofdiscontent

Yes to Beaconsfield ( and basically all the other villages that aren’t High Wycombe)

Cobham
Reigate
Godalming

Disagree with Chichester. Its got a right old mix of farming/ poverty Polish/sailing / Londoners for everyone to find inclusion.

Wondered how long it would be before Reigate got a mention, surprised how little Surrey has been named.
Gubanc · 17/05/2021 22:12

@MyOctopusFeature

Blockley, Gloucestershire.

I know a lady there who eats duck eggs for breakfast.

Eating duck eggs is snobby?
Lapun · 17/05/2021 22:14

Hampstead NW London

TatianaBis · 17/05/2021 22:15

@PictureNest

Forgot to add two actually

Basildon and Luton

Haha
TheSugarRefiner · 17/05/2021 22:19

St John's Wood was very snobby when I lived there. I now live in Camden where there are different kind of snobs I.e. art student snobs

friendlycat · 17/05/2021 22:31

This thread is hilarious. Some of the places suggested are a hoot.
I would say though that Mayfair and Belgravia have a certain amount of perceived snob value but certainly not Luton, Watford, Kingston to name but a few. Tonbridge seriously no. Perhaps Tunbridge Wells but even then ....

There is a lot of money in Haslemere yes. There are many properties in the 4 to 9;million plus category.
