Snobbiest places in the UK?

Following from similar threads about overrated and underrated places in the UK... where are the snobbiest places in the UK?

From the places I've been, I'd say Harrogate, Oxford, and the rest of the Cotswolds.

OP posts:

Harpenden, particularly the wannabe end rather than West Common.

Haas19 · 17/05/2021 17:54

Ashbourne, Derbyshire. They walk around with their noses in the air and don’t want certain pub chains and shops in the town as it will “cheapen it”. Really stuck up and if you aren’t born in the town they treat you with contempt

Harpenden, particularly the wannabe end rather than West Common.
Which is the wannabe end? All the largest houses are in West Common.

Haslemere, Surrey.
Always an outsider unless you've lived here for 3 generations

  • Correction. Unless your family have lived there for at least 3 generations.

Marlow. Nowhere near as nice as it thinks it is.

Ravenspeckingearly · 17/05/2021 18:01

@lazystar me too! there is another thread going about someone who wants to move to Bath (along with the rest of London)....and I literally think WTF would anyone move here. Its insanely expensive, has about as much cultural diversity as a genetically modified tomato and has no facilities for families. The entitlement amongst the kids (and parents) at DCs school is off the scale. If we didn't have family here I would definitely move on.....I just don't get why people want to move here.

Shimmyingmetacos · 17/05/2021 18:05

PermanentTemporary Tonbridge used to be the most unsnobby place ever until very recently, now massive influx of Londoners wanting the countryside and schools. I’d say Tonbridge still definitely much friendlier and down to earth than Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells but I fear not for long

Diva66 · 17/05/2021 18:07

Mumsnet is the snobbiest place in the entire universe Grin

marlowmarlowmarlow · 17/05/2021 18:07

@tapdancingmum

Marlow is quite snobby and they used to go quite green if you asked them if they lived on the Colditz estate 🤣. An acquaintance moved to a new build in Marlow and was quite put out when it was mentioned this new estate was tagged onto an existing council housing estate so wasn't quite the posh area she portrayed. Also, mention to a Marlovian that they lost their HP postcode and have now been lumped in with Slough they stutter.... There are some lovely houses/areas in Marlow but I don't know why they think they are better than us when, as my DH describes it, it's just a high street with wanky shops and a river.

Beaconsfield - I totally agree with the other posters on here.

I was brought up in Marlow, not on the Colditz estate Grin but there was a very definite snobbery about people who did live there. The worst thing was that all the windows had black frames and black front doors, so you could tell who had bought their house from the council as they immediately got different coloured front doors!

I'm sure it's changed lots since then and even Colditz is posh now, I probably couldn't afford to live there.

Hove

Altrincham - the Bowdon residents' assoc refused to have Trafford as part of their address. It's why Timperley, Altrincham and Bowdon have Cheshire as their address. They're all in Trafford.

So does Sale!

And in Urmston we use Lancs. Stockport and Stalybridge use Cheshire. It’s more about not wanting to be part of a defunct metropolitan organisation which was foisted on the residents against their wishes rather than snobbery. People have stuck with their traditional county affiliation.

Fallingrain · 17/05/2021 18:26

@Furries I don’t disagree re Beaconsfield but the new town is WAY more snobby than old. Distinct lack of awful exec mansions with pillars and electric gates in the old town and you can hear the motorway (a lot) 😂

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 17/05/2021 18:27

Oops, I've always felt as if I've found my tribe in Bath.

Holt is full of London monied middle classes with a second home. As is Downham Market. That whole area of North Norfolk is really, possibly more so now that William and Catherine have a base up there.

MyOctopusFeature · 17/05/2021 18:28

Blockley, Gloucestershire.

I know a lady there who eats duck eggs for breakfast.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 17/05/2021 18:32

Never judge on appearances. Yes, I think that's it in a nutshell. Does anyone remember the Veneerings in Our Mutual Friend? Just because you look the part doesn't mean you are!

ALittleBitOfThisAndThat · 17/05/2021 18:33

Downham Market... surely not Shock I think you may mean Burnham Market?

ivykaty44 · 17/05/2021 18:34

Coventry

and id agree not everyone in the Cotswolds is filthy rich, but it does help as housing starts at £500k

AbsolutelyPatsy · 17/05/2021 18:41

Tunbridge Wells,
they really didnt want the poundshop they got

Lincslady53 · 17/05/2021 18:45

Up here in the North West, we have Formby. Their local facebook page is full of people complaining about visitors to their lovely beaches, pine woods and dunes. Lots of footballers live in the area, Stevie Gerrard had a gym built at the back of his garden, in a road full of large traditional 30s houses. A large, square modern block. That went down well! On the other side of us we have Lytham and St Annes. Lytham is lovely, but some of the people really lookdown on their neighbours. Mind you. Their neighbours live in Blackpool or Preston.

My family lived there for 3 generations - we were still looked down on because my dad was foreign and we moved from private to state when his salary could no longer cover the fees.
littlemisskt · 17/05/2021 18:48

Absolutely crying here about Luton - my husband can’t decide whether to be more insulted at being called an oik or snotty 🤣

vinoinveritas · 17/05/2021 18:48

Oh yes, definitely Berkhamsted - one of the snobbiest places ever!

3scape · 17/05/2021 18:49

Kinsbourne Green where I encountered a LOT of snobbishness about how I spoke, the school I attended and that (shock horror) my parents allowed me, a teenager, to work. In West Common I found nothing but laid back clients who were politely disinterested in my "respectability" and only my actual references.
