This was used when I was a child as a fond insult I guess
Along with don't stand around like cheese at 4 pence
Unless my spelling is wrong apath doesn't fit does it?

Is it apeth? Always assumed it was something to do with a species of monkey? I don't use it nowadays as would be scared of potentially offending someone!

AtoZed · 12/05/2021 08:23

It's ha’porth - short for half penny worth. As in “he doesn't have a half penny worth of sense”

Finfintytint · 12/05/2021 08:23

It’s Apeth. Half pence, so not worth much.

Berthatydfil · 12/05/2021 08:23

Daft h’apeth
Contracted form of half penny worth

picklemewalnuts · 12/05/2021 08:24

I thought it was a shortened form of a halfpenny's worth?
Though I've no idea how you'd spell that!

FireworksAndSparklers · 12/05/2021 08:24

I like 'what's that got to do with the price of eggs?'

UhtredRagnarson · 12/05/2021 08:25

Doesn’t fit what?

Enb76 · 12/05/2021 08:26

My granny used to say ‘ye daft ha’porth’ to me. It’s a friendly sort of thing to say, unlikely to cause any offence.

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 12/05/2021 08:26

The half penny makes sense
I hope it isn't offensive, I use it all the time Grin

Daft h’apeth needs a revival! I also like wazzock

ErrolTheDragon · 12/05/2021 08:29

It made more sense back when they had ha'pennies! And perhaps more obvious in some accents than others.
I'd not heard the cheese one before.

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 12/05/2021 08:30

Oh I love the cheese one and often use it with my dc
Both work with a Yorkshire accent

What's that got to do with the price of tea in China?

Tuppence short of a pound.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 12/05/2021 08:38

This is so weird. On Downton Abbey Mrs Patmore says it to her niece and as I was watching it for the millionth time yesterday I looked it up.

I feel like I conjured up this thread!

It said it was a daft fool and was a Northern expression. DA was in the 1920's so could be an older use.

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 12/05/2021 08:46

picklemewalnuts
Thank you

my nana called people who she considered 'odd' an 'ha-porth of dates', looking back it seems she knew a lot of 'odd' people Grin

she also described anyone who was ill as being 'queer', as in, 'oh, Mrs Smith at number 9 has been in bed all week poor thing, she is very queer'

JackieTheFart · 12/05/2021 11:10

Tit in a trance is one of my family faves.

I watched an episode of Poirot the other day - one of the characters told her step daughter to stop standing around like a cough drop which I’ve adopted Grin
