Films/Shows that you thought you'd love but didn't.

What films/shows disappointed you?

There's so many but the first that comes to mind for me is Amadeus. I love Mozart and I love Biopics but I hated this. It took me several attempts to get through it. I thought it was so dull and Mozart was utterly insufferable.(Probably the point but he annoyed me so much that I gave up.

Another is The Grand Budapest Hotel. I love Ralph Fiennes and I thought it looked funny and utterly charming but I really didn't enjoy it. Having tried a few other Wes Anderson films, I think that he just isn't for me.

Parks and recreation- the odd bits been funny but it's nowhere near as good as I thought

suckingonchillidogs · 09/05/2021 20:33

Schitts Creek - so many people love it and I thought I would too. Nearly finished season 2 and I'm just not getting what everyone else seems to see in it

Spudlet · 09/05/2021 20:34

Breaking Bad. I gave it a good few episodes but I just couldn’t get into it. I think it had been overhyped and our expectations were a bit too high tbh.

La La land - love musicals but never been able to get into this

A Star is Born - as above, although I do like the music from this

Marlena1 · 09/05/2021 20:38

The Fall - completely my kind of thing and I love Jamie Dornan but I just didn't enjoy it (although I can appreciate it was really well done).

Londonmummy66 · 09/05/2021 20:40

Last Christmas - so disappointing

adawong · 09/05/2021 20:50

Hamilton. Tried to watch it 3 or 4 times barely made 45 minutes, so bloody dull.

WildRosie · 09/05/2021 20:52

Half Moon Street - Sigourney Weaver and Michael Caine. Balderdash. I didn't watch it to the end.

I agree,. My DS raved about Hamilton. Just couldn’t into the film, and turned it off after thirty minute.

(I can see a theme developing, but I do love musicals, ho est)

gabsdot45 · 09/05/2021 20:55

Shrek the musical.
I love the Shrek movies but this was extremely lame.

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 09/05/2021 20:56

Dolly Parton's Christmas musical, I like Dolly but it was not my cup of tea.

Gingernaut · 09/05/2021 21:00

The Godfather Part 3

Indulgent direction, poor casting, over long and played in cinemas with an interval.

Story was good, but the acting from the younger characters was poor.

Parks and Recreation. Nowhere near enough laughs per episode.

Allbymyself1 · 09/05/2021 21:10

Yes Londonmummy66!
Was looking forward to Last Christmas for months, love George Micheal and his music, liked a lot of films with Emma Thompson in and loved Whatshername in Me Before You but I came out of the cinema really disappointed! 😥
Didn't like Judy either, just made her seem so pathetic and desperate which may have been true but I didn't like thinking of her that way. Also Renee seems to have a very distinctive way of smoking and every scene in Judy where she smoked, I just saw Bridget Jones!

BackforGood · 09/05/2021 21:12

Schindler's List - really couldn't 'connect' emotionally. I expected to be drawn in, and be in floods of tears. I generally like true stories.

La La Land - I'd heard the marmite reviews, but am generally a fan of a musical, but I couldn't 'get it' at all and turned it off.

Hamilton - I did watch to the end, but I was disappointed considering the rave reviews.

Sleepyquest · 09/05/2021 21:15

I'm not sure anyone loves Schindler's list @BackforGood !! It's harrowing but very well done and an important film

Darklane · 09/05/2021 21:17

La La Land. I love musicals but turned it off. Same with Les Miserables, The Glums we call it.

Mr Turner, about the painter.

Peterloo.

HelloOldSport · 09/05/2021 21:18

Yes to Hamilton! I was bored stiff and just did not find the storyline one bit interesting.

The Breakfast Club. Thought it would be brilliant because it's so talked about, but I just thought it was so dull. Can't even remember what happened.

GrouchyKiwi · 09/05/2021 21:18

Van Helsing tv show. Usually that kind of thing is right up my street but this was too serious and too icky. I hoped it would be more like the gloriously terrible film, which I adore.

Ditto The Alienist. I enjoy serial killer shows, but that felt like it gloried in the horror.

MiddleClassProblem · 09/05/2021 21:19

@PrincessesRUs and @LubaLuca did you get past the first series of Parks and Rec? Because the first series is a dud and completely different from the rest of it.

LunaNorth · 09/05/2021 21:19

YY to Mr Turner. I had to turn it off, I couldn’t bear all the snot.

VienneseWhirligig · 09/05/2021 21:22

I can't get into Hamilton. DS thinks I'm a heathen, and says it's the greatest musical he's seen (and he's a big musicals fan) but it isn't for me.

Brooklyn 99 is another one - I can take or leave it, it doesn't irritate me if it's on in the background but I wouldn't choose to watch it.

Comefromaway · 09/05/2021 21:22

La La Land definitely

Funny Girl

I loved Hamilton.

Susie477 · 09/05/2021 21:29

Star Wars : Phantom Menace.

I loved the SW films as a kid, and I'm old enough to have seen them all at release, so I was hugely excited to see Phantom Menace. It took about 15 minutes for me to realise that I was watching total crap. I left before the end, and haven’t watched a SW film since.
