Films/Shows that you thought you'd love but didn't.

What films/shows disappointed you?

There's so many but the first that comes to mind for me is Amadeus. I love Mozart and I love Biopics but I hated this. It took me several attempts to get through it. I thought it was so dull and Mozart was utterly insufferable.(Probably the point but he annoyed me so much that I gave up.

Another is The Grand Budapest Hotel. I love Ralph Fiennes and I thought it looked funny and utterly charming but I really didn't enjoy it. Having tried a few other Wes Anderson films, I think that he just isn't for me.

I had high hopes for Mad Men but found it boring, Wandavision, not my cup of tea, i thought i would love The Office but found it meh,
Schitts Creek, i tried and tried but didn't like it.

CallMeCleo · 09/05/2021 21:38

Rocketman, the life story of Elton John. I hardly know where to begin. Let's just say it's utter tripe.

Line of Duty. I was ill in bed and decided to find out what all the fuss is about. Watched the 1st series, hated it. Too many cops dying, too much corruption, too much illicit sex. Altogether, not realistic or believable. I much prefer The Bill!

Gertie75 · 09/05/2021 21:40

Breaking Bad, it started off great but should have been wrapped up in 2 seasons.

Same with The Walking Dead, it ended up season after season being the same story, spend a few episodes moving to new area, another few not getting along with new people then season finale.

The Wire. People raved about it, someone recommended it to me as “the best series ever made”. Couldn’t get through S1.

Prison Break another major letdown - made it through S1 but quickly tired of it in S2. How they ended up making 5 seasons is beyond me!

Yogaposer · 09/05/2021 22:11

Orange is the new Black

MiddleClassProblem · 09/05/2021 22:20

Million Dollar Baby. I thought I was in for a female Rocky type film...

I couldn’t get into The Wire either. I keep trying The Sopranos and I enjoy it whilst I watch it but the forget to go back to it so I’m not sure that’s a good sign. Having said that, I have only tried post child and my head is normally as ramble so mainly click with comedies and reality tv (plus my work can be pretty heavy in the ‘there are fucked up things that can happen to you’ department so I often need light relief)

Welshmumma92 · 09/05/2021 22:22

The office. Friends raved about it for ages so thought I would give it a watch. Lasted half an episode. Boring.

Thelnebriati · 09/05/2021 22:23

Jayne Eyre. They missed out all the good bits of the book and I've never been able to watch Michael Fassbender in anything else without expecting him to suddenly sprout sideburns.

MichelleScarn · 09/05/2021 22:26

@Deadringer Office David Brent or Michael Scott.
Season 1 usa is not a par on the rest of it!

Holothane · 09/05/2021 22:32

Peterloo bored me to tears I wanted a proper social history film showing conditions in the mills etc got nothing it seemed but political talk I was not happy.

Gembie · 09/05/2021 22:45

Manchester By The Sea - technically right up my street but it was so dull and I was shocked at how crap the acting was - Casey Affleck was wooden and Michelle Williams’ overacting was cringeworthy - can’t believe it won all those awards, I was so disappointed

I thought I would enjoy I May Destroy You more too but I found it a bit odd

BackforGood · 09/05/2021 23:01

@Sleepyquest - no, but I expected it to 'move me' if you like. For there to be a real horror, or anger and definitely emotional response. It should have drawn me in and mangled me up and left me feeling incredibly sad or angry, but it didn't do any of that.

Binglebong · 09/05/2021 23:08

La La Land.
Breaking bad.
The Great.

Many many others.

PassMeTheWotsits · 09/05/2021 23:16

PamDenick · 10/05/2021 00:15

Love, Actually.

Thought I'd love it but I didn't actually.

avamiah · 10/05/2021 00:22

PamDenick,
Yes I thought that as well , especially the part when Emma Thompson opens her Christmas present ☹️.

Titsywoo · 10/05/2021 00:25

Parks and Recreation - all my friends love it but I just don't find that weird awkward The Office style humour funny at all

Titsywoo · 10/05/2021 00:29

@adawong

Hamilton. Tried to watch it 3 or 4 times barely made 45 minutes, so bloody dull.
Same. I love musicals but I was bored after 30 mins.
LunaNorth · 10/05/2021 02:07

The Producers in the West End. My dad adored it and bought tickets for me and XH to go.

I was surrounded by guffawing people, and I genuinely couldn’t raise a titter.

salsmum · 10/05/2021 02:19

Moulin rouge WTAF?

Maria53 · 10/05/2021 02:20

@LunaNorth

YY to Mr Turner. I had to turn it off, I couldn’t bear all the snot.
Same! Just awful. Turned off as well, v disappointing.

Another PP said Breakfast Club, I agree there. Also Clueless. My friend has been going on about it for ages but I think you have to watch it as a teenager and the nostalgic hit is what my friends enjoy about it now. I also thought the way she ended up with her step brother at the end was a bit creepy.

Someone convinced me to The Terminal recently and I thought it was the worst guff

GrouchyKiwi · 10/05/2021 09:00

@salsmum

Moulin rouge WTAF?
I loved that when I watched it years ago. DH and I tried watching it the other night and turned it off.
