Next door asking for WiFi password

Just want to start by saying I would do anything for anyone but I’m not quite sure we have done the right thing. Last night next door knocked on asking if they could have the WiFi password. I didn’t answer as I was upstairs, so DP did and he gave it her. Now, they aren’t my favourite people (putting that nicely) I put a thread a bit back saying how much of a nightmare they are. Not really sure why DP gave it her to be honest. I’m really paranoid now they have it. Does anyone know if they could do anything dodgy with it? I might be sounding dramatic but if so, could I change my WiFi password and would that kick them off it?

Well I'm very sorry to have upset you. I'm not that well versed in mn I didn't know how many posts there had been or how to read just the op ones. I just wanted to ensure the op changed their password. I didn't have time to scroll through all the replies.

Not quite sure why you have to be narky with me. Hope it's made you feel good.

AnnieSnap · 10/05/2021 20:21

It’s weird for someone outside the home to ask for that and I’m surprised anyone would provide it. If you have any CCTV, or a wifi enabled baby monitor, they could potentially hack into it if they are very techy. I think it’s an awful idea for them to have it. Plus they should pay for their own like everyone else has to! I think you should change the password without delay and tell they you have been advised to do it for security reasons or it could effect your household insurance. They won’t know any different.

Glad you've changed it OP, I wonder if your neighbour will have the cheek to ask for it again. On another note, your DP is a wet blanket - how hard can it be to say no? I'd be more annoyed at him than the neighbour!

When I’m made dictator, people who post on MN without RTFT will be hell banned. 24 hours for the first infringement, 48 hours for the second, and so on.

FluffyPaws · 10/05/2021 20:31

POLICE will tell you never to share your details and giving them your password into your WiFi has opened the door land left the fridge door open as well...bye bye drained bank accounts credit cards bills..change immediately ASAP..and never do this again .Sorry for sounding dramatic but this is an open invitation

ConfusedCarrie · 10/05/2021 20:35

Change the password and don't give it out to people. If you know what you are doing, you can access everything if you are on the same network. This includes online banking details, passwords, bankcards details. They could also access your computer and put keylogger or spyware on. You should never access sensitive info on public wifi.

JellyBabiesFan · 10/05/2021 20:35

Change it and also turn the modem off for 30 minutes to try and change your IP number.

ForwardRanger · 10/05/2021 20:37

@DrDreReturns

For example my router's portal is just an ip address, e.g. 192.168.1.254 You will probably need a password to get into it (not the same as your WiFi password.) That's on the back of my router.
Yes use this then go to controls and you can block individual devices. I do this with kids, they have access at certain times

I cant remember being so "upset" if I am honest. It has destroyed my evening, my peace, nay, my family's life.

But your apology is appreciated. I just wonder why someone after a thread has been up a whole day thinks that no-one would have said "change the password" within the first few posts. Or click on the OPs posts and filter them and see they did it yesterday.

But I will go and rebuild my shattered life after you "upset" me so Grin

Cheeky fuckers

sue69m · 10/05/2021 20:57

Change your router name to IPAYTHEBILL and change the wifi password... Cheeky fuckers

MaggieFS · 10/05/2021 21:00

Cancel the cheque direct debit, put some penguin bollards around your house. Make sure your husband uses a penis beaker to atone for his stupidity. Oh, and have you thought of changing the password for the router? I suggest Bal0nz would be an excellent new one.

CathyorClaire · 10/05/2021 21:02

I was always mildly surprised that we were pretty much alone in refusing to hand over the wifi password when we hosted European students. I preferred not to have to worry about what they might be were accessing on it. They would bleat and pout but we just told them it was locked with a 'what can you do' smile.

Glad you've changed it, OP. 'CFscanFO' might be apt.

Bertiebiscuit · 10/05/2021 21:06

ARE YOU INSANE? change password immediately and never do anything like this again - tell them to f*off in future

Trudij123 · 10/05/2021 21:09

Any update OP? I can’t add anything -
Everything I’ve thought has been said on the 13 pages!!

Sikantiskatinas · 10/05/2021 21:17

Do they only have Wi-fi password, or did they taken a picture of admin password too? Because with admin password they can change router settings and turn devices on again.

Sparkles556 · 10/05/2021 21:18

I have been reading all your replies and just want to thank you for the help. The password has now been changed and I unplugged the router too like some of you suggested. When I went into the WiFi settings on my phone it said ‘enter password’ whereas normally it is just connected so I think all is good now. She hasn’t knocked on again so far, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she does! She will be getting a simple no this time anyway.

Sparkles556 · 10/05/2021 21:22

@Sikantiskatinas oh reallySad I don’t even know. I’m really not clued up on all this. When she knocked on she showed dp her phone screen with all the different WiFi codes( if that’s what you even call them)and asked if she could have the password. That’s all the conversation was really. Apart from DP telling her the password. Hope this makes senseConfused

To read the ops posts you click on 'see all' at the bottom of any of their posts. I only learned this recently. When people used to suggest it I imagined you just had to scroll through all the pages looking for the green posts. It's very handy now to be able to just read an ops posts when I don't have time to read though pages of posts.

@Sparkles556 glad you got sorted. I must tell my teens never to give a password to a neighbour if they ever happened to ask. I imagine they wouldn't even consider any possible negative consequences.

SionnachGlic · 10/05/2021 21:32

V odd behaviour from a neighbour who doesn't even know you. Some nerve.. There was a similar thread not too long ago about another CF neighbour. You did right to change your password.

LittleTiger007 · 10/05/2021 21:32

@romdowa

Yes they could do very dodgy things and it would be on your ip address. Change it asap and pretend like you've no idea what the problem is
This!!
Seafog · 10/05/2021 21:34

Glad you got it changed, if she comes around asking, just say sorry, we won't be able to do that, repeat as needed

RB68 · 10/05/2021 21:36

just change the password and say its not available now sorry. They could be downloading all sorts or on the darknet up to all sorts on your IP
