Is it too soon to ditch Keir Starter? Is it too late to consider David Milli and?

Maybe these election results are not all Keir Starmers fault but, even though I was delighted when he was elected leader, I'm beginning to have doubts about his electability.
I saw David Milliband on the TV the other night and thought of what might have been.
I'm not sure if he's even in the Labour party any more.
Andy Burnham is the bookies favourite to be the next leader and maybe he'd be an improvement but I'm not sure.
It's all very depressing.

To be honest I don't really know who Labour are anymore except they like to criticise the tories.

Andy Burnham is TWAW?

I’m a big fan of David Milliband.

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 07/05/2021 22:06

Its such a pity that useless Ed with his bloody Ed stone did one over on his brother. He was the one who courted the far left and brought it the join to vote for £20 or something similar
Unless they get rid of the loony fringe and momentum, tackle bullying, respect working class issues and women it won't matter who is leader

Belindabelle · 07/05/2021 22:07

David Miliband now lives and works in NYC as head of International Rescue so I can’t see him coming back to the shit show that is the current Labour Party.

ShagMeRiggins · 07/05/2021 22:09

Quite.

The glorious ship David Miliband has sailed...

Smallabl · 07/05/2021 22:14

Yeah Ed fucked over his brother and what might have been is very much sadly just that....I’d have voted for David Miliband in a heartbeat but Ed Miliband and then Jeremy Corbyn never had my vote. Currently Sir Kier isn’t getting it either!!

newnortherner111 · 07/05/2021 22:14

It will take more than ditching Keir Starmer for Labour to recover sufficiently to stop a Tory majority in 2024.

Laiste · 07/05/2021 22:15

David Miliband now works as head of International Rescue

Am i the only one who thought - Thunderbirds! Grin

HopeClearwater · 07/05/2021 22:20

Can’t anyone spell Keir? 🙄

groundcontroltomontydon · 07/05/2021 22:26

Starmer is the only thing that isn't wrong with Labour. Its beigeness over Brexit and obsession with identity politics has denied us any kind of opposition and condemned us to a future of unchallenged Tory sleeze.

Guavafish · 07/05/2021 22:27

Labour are finished

candycane222 · 07/05/2021 22:31

But fo you reckon it's 1,2,3or 4 he pilots, Laiste ?? Wink

Sugarcube84 · 07/05/2021 22:31

I like andy burnham, I think he did a great job advocating for Manchester during lockdown/pandemic to the point that he has been labelled a problem by london.

He did so much better for Manchester than the Liverpool mp/mayor (forgot his name) did,

But that does make me wonder whether he thinks that he can do more good at local level that getting back into the Labour Party.

Labour seems to have lost its core values and voters, that’s not due to just lack of leadership but not clear vision

ohgenome · 07/05/2021 22:33

@Arnoldbee

To be honest I don't really know who Labour are anymore except they like to criticise the tories.

Best laugh I've had all night!

He doesn't challenge or criticise he just sees which way the polls and wind is blowing and then screws it up with his pompous pontificating and fear of upsetting the middle-ground.

Labour are dead from left, right and centre - and they have no core values, policy or ideas. They are shafted by Parliamentary system and unable to look beyond identity politics.

They no longer represent the working class and are destined to remain in opposition unless there is a change to FPB system.

Andy B is vocal and an attractive choice for some but basically but cut from same cloth as David/Ed Miliband/Starmer etc

Thanks for that Hmm
picturesandpickles · 07/05/2021 22:35

@Guavafish

Labour are finished
Look at the Tories in 97 etc., things change. Who knows really?
Roominmyhouse · 07/05/2021 22:37

Ah it all went so wrong when they picked the wrong Milliband!

ForgedInFire · 07/05/2021 22:39

Sadly, I think Labour is done. A name everyone has heard coming back as leader will not be enough to resurrect it. Better for the best politicians it has left to strike out and create a new brand.

ceilingsand · 07/05/2021 22:42

He's hopeless and has to go.

twelly · 07/05/2021 22:45

I was a huge supporter of labour under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown - wasn't a fan of Ed milliband but voted for him, however when Jeremy Corbyn was leading labour I did not vote for the party. I like Keir Stamma and would vote for Labour again now.

MrsPeacockInTheLibrary · 07/05/2021 22:50

Honestly, Labour is done for reasons long-embedded before events discussed here.

It cannot win without Scotland. It also cannot win without attracting voters over from the Tories. It also needs to address the so-called 'red wall.'

However, and sadly, it needs to win over itself. I have been in and out of Labour politics for a decade or so and the factionalism and infighting is more entrenched than ever. This has been addressed by the Conservatives, who also have no real rivals on their side of the spectrum. Whereas the left vote (however you want to define that) is split amongst several parties and movements.

Accordingly, Labour have a nearly impossible task - and I haven't even mentioned traditional voters or policies or anything else about an election. They will be out of power almost indefinitely with these factors in play.

The Conservatives are atop the mountain, whilst their opponents squabble on the foothills.

Marmaladeagain · 07/05/2021 22:51

It’s the messages , not the messenger. Labour have contempt for their voters. Always seen that myself, the voters have cottoned on is all that’s happened. Any other person at helm won’t change the labour mindset.

It is an experiment in trying to tell people what to think and no space for differing views. Intolerance in action from people claiming tolerance. Scary. It will only change if even fewer people vote for them I’d assume, although I wouldn’t bank on that.

Tealightsandd · 07/05/2021 22:51

This. He's not the best, he needs more of a back bone and needs to lose the Blair associations and the Remain obsession, but he's the best of the current Labour Party. There is the problem.

David, I'm earning huge huge sums working for a charity, Milibrand, really isn't the answer. Nor is another Corbyn type - definitely not.

They need someone less intent on identities and stoking division (that includes regional) and more focused on what people actually want - instead of what they think the people should want.
