Anyone in Hartlepool - what on earth is going on

Genuine question. (Apologies if this is in the wrong place, I don’t post much). I’m Scottish and in Scotland, and I am constantly aware these days of how different the views are of Westminster up here, to across the border sometimes. We also have our own Labour Party leader up here. But really? Is Keir Starmer that bad? Are other parties not available? Who on earth is still voting for Boris…? Any WHY?

Yup threads about labour always turn out like this. Group love for tories. Time will tell re levelling up. I'm sure investment will pour in. We already have a tory mp but waiting to see big improvements in our town.

Flemingshat · 07/05/2021 15:29

Labour cannot simultaneously please socially conservative working class brexit supporters and also please liberal metropolitan types.

hamstersarse · 07/05/2021 15:29

@LetSophieGo

haha watching this thread unfold is like witnessing a giant tory group walk. with hamstersarse supplying free lube from a tube with a Union Jack on it Grin
The fact you are offended by the thought of the Union Jack says a lot about the left.

Is there any other country in the world where it is seen as being cunty to fly their national flag?

It's verging on insanity

TheKeatingFive · 07/05/2021 15:30

Labour cannot simultaneously please socially conservative working class brexit supporters and also please liberal metropolitan types.

Labour found common ground between these groups under Blair. Granted it was pre-brexit.

SunsetBeetch · 07/05/2021 15:31

Group love for the tories

What??? Genuinely: what???

APinchOfLOL · 07/05/2021 15:32

I don't get this affiliation and loyalty to one party. It is not a religion or a football team, it is politics and different personalities have different ways of working. TB was a completely different animal to JC but people still voted for the party.

I vote for who I think will do the best job or the least bad job. I used to work abroad and I see Britain through a very different lens to what my friends do. I think Boris is very unique, not in necessarily a good way, and I think he is the only person in this generation who can turn our country around. If you give him 10 years, this and another term he will transform this county and do it in unorthodox ways and if that is what it takes, so be it. I will hold my nose and ignore who paid for his wallpaper as long term I think he can pull some blinders out the bag.

We can go back to being a declining country or we can take a chance on a man with a vision. There is nothing to lose as far as I can see, we were running on empty before.

@StillRailing

This sort of use of statistics as a blunt force instrument sickens me tbh.
I agree and as I have pointed out on here and elsewhere (not least on Brexit threads), these are just statistical probabilities, extrapolated from a small sample size. A lot of people quoting them represent them as "the facts" when they are nothing of the sort.
StillRailing · 07/05/2021 15:33

I'd always choose a group walk, but that's just how I roll.

I also now see randomer as Columbo in a Mac investigating her holiday village for wrong think.

Thanks MN for the cheering up this thread has provided on a low day.xx

hamstersarse · 07/05/2021 15:34

@LetSophieGo It's actually no joke that I am considering getting a Union Flag / or maybe a St Georges cross. Was only talking about it the other day.

I am the least likely person in RL to have one. Friends on the left who are lecturers and teachers and nurses might be horrified, but at least it might get the conversation going.

You might have inspired me to take the plunge

Needmoresleep · 07/05/2021 15:34

Are you sure. I am not seeing much group love for Boris. Just frustration that Labour have found themselves down a cul-de-sac and seem unwilling to turn around, even though voters repeatedly tell them that this is what the electorate want.

StillRailing · 07/05/2021 15:34

DymamoKev I remember you, you don't like football.😅

JudgeJ · 07/05/2021 15:37

@TatianaBis

The level of contempt you have for people daring to vote differently is quite chilling.

Predicting people will regret their vote is contemptuous? I can live with that. I do have the example of history behind me.

I too have the example of history behind me which is why I despise the Labour party which hasn't made any attempt to move on from the cloth cap and whippets attitudes of the 1920s and 30s. The well educated, well-off leaders of the Labour party seem to want to pull up the ladder for anyone else aspiring to their heights.
TatianaBis · 07/05/2021 15:37

Are you actually being serious? I genuinely can’t tell anymore. Kate Bingham who famously rocked up, unannounced, and said I’ll give getting some jags a go. Or was she actually appointed, by Boris Johnson’s government and told ‘do what you need to do to save lives’?

Just to be clear Kate was not ‘actually appointed’ by any normal formal government process. She was simply given the job by Boris circumventing the standard rules of propriety governing public appointees.

crosstalk · 07/05/2021 15:37

Peter Mandelson anyone? Emily Thornberry sneering at a white van man with a Union Jack? Blair taking us into Iraq with the dodgy dossier?
Gordon Brown calling an elderly woman a bigot without addressing her issues?

Labour being deeply divided over issues of anti semitism and which way they want to swing and their attitude towards women doesn't help.

In the end of the day Hartlepool voted Tory.

Puttingouthefirewithgasoline · 07/05/2021 15:39

How can you reconcile the thought that you’re on the side who are fighting for the disadvantaged while simultaneously believing that the disadvantaged (I.e those who haven’t received excellent education) are too stupid to vote?

^ because there are non so blind as those who refuse to see.

I have a friend whose DH is a barrister ( not a well paid one), they spout all this nonsense too, they went out canvassing before the GE and could not understand why people slammed doors in their faces, they could not get it and said it was soley to do with the papers they read and they are all racist.

One can't speak to them or get through to them, they do not get it, and will not listen

This is why I dislike tribal politics or tribal anything, it inhibits peoples ability to think clearly because they have been brain washed since little.

A well known hard let activist on here used to proudly declare how her DM wanted to " burn down waitrose", and how she had raised her own DC to be open minded and LEFT like her! She admitted she would not tolerate a Tory child.

I was also raised in a dyed in the wool RED house but GUESS WHAT, my DF prized above all else, independent thought and critical thinkers and never ever tried to control how I thought or what I did etc.

This is what we should be prizing and pushing above all else, independent critical thinkers, now this dyed in the wool chain has been broken in thousands and thousands of families maybe this will eventually seep through and in future give us better Labour candidates who are first and foremost intelligent balanced people.

Is there any other country in the world where it is seen as being cunty to fly their national flag?

No there isn't. Just England. That's it.

DynamoKev · 07/05/2021 15:40

@StillRailing

DymamoKev I remember you, you don't like football.😅
Correct
Puttingouthefirewithgasoline · 07/05/2021 15:42

Emily Thornberry

Oh gosh I used to really like her, years ago, I think her heart is in the right place but what a prime example of someone who just does, not, get IT!

borntobequiet · 07/05/2021 15:43

And yet its other who are rotters when we point out that Rayner (who has no qualifications, having left school at 16 when pregnant) is a piss-poor choice for shadow education secretary.

I’m not a Labour supporter and find Angela Rayner underwhelming, but no more so than the majority of MPs and ministers of all parties.
I’d say that someone from her background - who was also a teenage carer - and who rose through the Trade Union movement and subsequently to high office in politics is a very good choice for shadow Education Secretary, far better than the current Government incumbent, and a role model for those who aspire to better themselves.

Onetoomuch · 07/05/2021 15:44

@JudgeJ evidence ?

Feelinghothothottoday · 07/05/2021 15:44

Of course there is a clash between British culture and values and Islam. It will never work. Add immigration, add self ID, add massive house building. Let’s have an adult discussion or a vote on these issues.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 07/05/2021 15:45

Labour deposed the Liberals as the main opposition party to the Conservatives about 100 years ago. I suspect they may have run their course and are on the way out permanently.

risefromyourgrave · 07/05/2021 15:45

@Riddly

You have to remember that it was Hartlepool, who, during the Napoleonic Wars, hanged a shipwrecked monkey as a French spy? They seem to be ‘voting for Brexit’, now that the Ukip/ Brexit party has gone, they believe that Johnson has delivered...
Gosh yes, some people 200 years ago did a silly thing, people who live there now are obviously exactly the same, lock up your monkeys around those stupid Hartlepudlians won’t you? Hmm
TatianaBis · 07/05/2021 15:48

We all get on ok in London. What is everyone else doing that they find it so hard?
