Truthfully, how often do you change your bedsheets?

  1. When you were a child?
  2. As a university student (or equivalent) ?
  3. Now?

Any difference between being single/ sharing a bed with a partner?

As a child - very rarely. Maybe once or twice a year. I didn’t like it, as it would usually be stripped off several days before it was put back on again, so it’d be bare mattress and duvet. I had one set and it would sit in the washing basket for a few days before being put in the wash. Then usually left for a few days again wet before being hung on the clothes horse. When it went back on it would smell foisty so I didn’t like the whole process. It would smell a lot better after a few weeks of use as the mouldy smell would wear off. As for ‘obviously’ taking over this and increasing it as a teen - you can’t when there’s no electric to run the washer.

I lived with my grandparents for a while and there the answer was - sheets monthly. Blankets never. They were wool.

Didn’t do university.

Now - every 2 weeks ish but I wouldn’t beat myself up if it got to 3.

My dc used to roll me out of bed at an ungodly hour every sat morning to change my sheets, I used to complain but was lovely getting back in them!
As an adult, every couple of weeks in the winter, weekly in the summer.

NeverSurrender · 04/05/2021 21:11

My DM not DC!

sunflowersandbuttercups · 04/05/2021 21:12

As a child - weekly/fortnightly.
As a student - whenever I could be bothered? Probably not often as I had to walk to the laundromat and I was lazy Grin
As an adult - weekly.

Cantstandthesnoring · 04/05/2021 21:34

fortnightly, but that's an 'adult' recent thing. God knows when I was younger/studying

ImFree2doasiwant · 04/05/2021 21:38

Ideally, fortnightly but often every 3 or 4 weeks. I'm single. When I still had a husband, it was weekly, or fortnightly at a stretch. He left a greasy mark behind despite bathing every night.

saraclara · 04/05/2021 21:38

@LoveFall

Now, once a week.

At university, in residence we got one clean sheet every week, so you swapped out the used top sheet to the bottom and used the clean one on top.

As a child, my memory says once a week.

Did we go to the same uni?!

As an adult: when I had to change the duvet cover myself, once a fortnight (or even three weekly). Now I have a cleaner who does it, once a week!

@TheVampiresWife

Yesterday we had the 'how often do you shower' thread, today it's the 'how often do you change your sheets' thread so tomorrow it must be time for 'do you wash your towels'

  1. Fortnightly
  2. Fortnightly
  3. Fortnightly

Clearly a creature of habit. If I'm away for 4 nights or more in the period I'll stretch it to 3.

FindingMeno · 04/05/2021 22:38

Probably roughly every two weeks at all stages, whether single or not.
I tried to go weekly once but life is too short for all that extra laundry.

MaryJosephJesusAndTheWeeDonkey · 04/05/2021 22:49

Every week. I love a clean bed. Height of luxury of having had the sheets dried outside.

Getting into a crisp bed that smells of outside... and freshness....it is delicious and sends me to sleep in seconds.

I cannot stand a "soft" slept-in-for-more-than-a-week sheets that smell stale.

People that don't changed them got more than 2 weeks....that's utterly revolting....

MarshaBradyo · 04/05/2021 22:52

Every week

I remember as a teen as did it each week at boarding school

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 04/05/2021 22:52

My Mum always did ours growing up so can’t remember how often but had a major shock to my system when I left home and had to learn! Took me ages to master the duvet... At uni honestly whenever I could be arsed, probably every other month at best. Nowadays tend to do it fortnightly.

canary1 · 04/05/2021 22:52

I’ve in the last year ( perhaps lockdown related! ) have taken to changing mine very couple of nights. I’ve possibly lost my mind then 😂 I do the kids beds weekly.

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 04/05/2021 22:53

Height of luxury of having had the sheets dried outside.

Disagree, absolutely hate the ‘outside’ smell.

Moonface123 · 04/05/2021 22:54

Depends, probably about every couple of weeks, but l allow my cats on my bed , l do use a large throw on top of bed, so sometimes l change them sooner.

BeefSupreme · 04/05/2021 22:59

Hang on... do people wash their duvets? Or do you all mean duvet covers?

CoodleMoodle · 04/05/2021 23:04

Every other week, on a Sunday. We do our bed one week, and the 2 DC's the next (one bed, one cot). I used to do them all every other Sunday but it was a PITA so now we alternate. It's fine.

2020nymph · 04/05/2021 23:04

As a child - weekly. It was in our list of chores
At uni - intentions of weekly but prob 1-2 weeks
Now - weekly

Xmasbaby11 · 04/05/2021 23:06

Now - every fortnight. It's easy we have a dryer if needed, also plenty of spare sheets.

As a child - no idea, my parents would have done it!

As a student/ in shared houses- probably less than fortnightly because of struggles with washing / drying, but I don't really remember as it was years ago - I'm 45.

MintLampShade · 04/05/2021 23:13

Every two weeks or so I'd say. But we shower before going to bed which makes the sheets last a bit longer.

motherloaded · 04/05/2021 23:14

Never changed bedsheets myself as a child.

Don't people like the feel and smell of fresh bedsheets and clean pillows? I only change weekly, but the first night is always the best!

Snugglepumpkin · 05/05/2021 00:58

Every Friday.
Always been every Friday.
I like to go to begin the weekend with fresh sheets & fresh towels.

tellmetologoffIamaMNaddict · 05/05/2021 01:41

As a child: every time I wet the bed
As a student: every time I had puked in a bucket from the bed
Now: Every time the cat pukes on the bed

Time40 · 05/05/2021 01:57

Me too. I always thought it was a very weird system.
