Has anyone regretted getting a white kitchen floor? Has anyone regretted anything they chose for their kitchen actually?

Basically i can't chose what i want in my kitchen and it's driving me insane!

I think i've chosen a quartz worktop (calacatta with a thin additional vein of copper in it) and i think i've chosen a magnet cabinet style (tatton) but for life of me i don't know what colour to chose for the floor and to be honest can't chose the colour of the cabinets either!

If i go with a white floor to echo the quartz will i regret it? At least white/white means the cabinet colour will be easier to chose? No?

Heeeeeelp Grin

pourmeanotherglass that colour is gorgeous! I'm so drawn to the dark greens and blues. I really think i am going to go a bit more safe though. It's a weight off my mind to have made even that simple decision! Now i have to pick between a dove grey, the Magnet pebble and .... ... cashmere! Grin

OrchidLass yep, i did the same in our downstairs loo. It's what i would have done in the kitchen as well if it weren't for this thread Grin

@SIHastingsLiketheBattle it's beautiful, that cashmere. I've been looking at pics of kitchens in that colour teamed with a mid tone wood floor, white/creamy stone worktops and rose gold accents (pendant lights ect) and i'm in love with it!

Our kitchen has a set of west facing french doors in it and is knocked through to a dinning room with a very large sash window which faces east. There IS light, but it needs to be treated as a precious thing so as not to loose it, IYSWIM?

You're right about door samples. I think it was DIY i was on last night and it's only £6 for a door sample isn't it?

I swore Magnet was the last company i was going to go through it all with, (they are the 3rd) but they don't do a cashmere in their shaker range. Aaaarrrgggghh!

I have shiny black marble counters in my kitchen and I hate it. They need to be cleaned and polished a hundred times a day and look just awful unless very freshly polished. Getting even the tiniest splash of water leaves awful marks.

HasaDigaEebowai · 04/05/2021 15:51

Be aware op that if you are going for a low cost porcelain it is likely to be low cost because it has a low pattern repeat. So if the pattern repeat is only 3 then every third tile will be identical and it will be very obvious that it’s a tile and not stone. We got stung by this once and I’m always now careful to ask about the repeat.

Black worktops! You can’t see any spillages.

no no noooo we have black composite stone worktops and you can see every little doeck of dirt. and we can't use normal cleaning stuff on it either or it disintegrates.
SIHastingsLiketheBattle · 04/05/2021 19:33

@Laiste I'm not biased at all but we got the Stanbury in Cashmere and it is GORGEOUS! We had another style from DIY kitchens in our old house (Malton Alabaster) which was a more traditional shaker style and also fab.

If you're anywhere near Leeds let me know as I've still our sample doors laying around and would be happy to pass them on!

I don't think I've ever been as invested in someone else's kitchen project Blush Grin

Laiste · 04/05/2021 21:15

rosetylersbiggun an old friend of mine had a black stone work top and said the very same. She felt she had to keep it looking wonderful at all times as well because she'd had to push hard for it £ wise with DH Hmm

redcandlelight disintegrates is a scary word. I have read the words ''irreparable damage'' in the same sentence as ''bleach'' and ''quartz worktops'' but daren't google it further. Eek.

It's bloody lovely!
I have ordered a sample of Clayton in cashmere.
I am no where near Leeds I'm just above the North Oxfordshire border in the middle of nowhere :)

Re: DIY kitchens, i'm struggling a bit with their website. They are supply only i guess? So i have to get my own fitter. And also i can't find a price list online. I'll try again in a minute but am i right that Clayton is the most affordable shaker style? And that Cashmere is one of their basic colours? ie not a special paint job. Sorry for all the questions X

@HasaDigaEebowai that's good advice, thank you. I wondered the same and if we went for either of those it would probably be the v plain one. However, i think i might plump for taking the wood right through the ground floor now, kitchen included.

So, with DIY kitchens, do you have to design it and decide what units and end panels ect. to order yourself?

That's a bit daunting.

OP posts:
SIHastingsLiketheBattle · 04/05/2021 22:52

@Laiste do not fear! It's not as scary as it sounds. You can use any plans you've already got for other suppliers and the planners at DIY will help you convert it into a scheme for their cabinets. They had an online planner where you could get a rough price for your kitchen but I'm not sure if it's available at the moment? I'll have a look in the morning.

Cashmere is a standard colour so no extra charge. The units at DIY are fantastic quality, I honestly can't recommend them enough. I installed our latest one myself and got to know it very well over the course of putting it together Grin hence why I am so evangelical!

Laiste · 05/05/2021 09:34

You fitted it yourself @SIHastingsLiketheBattle ! I'm so impressed i don't know where to start!
Over the last 3 years DH (builder) and i have built a house around a house, basically. 2 floors, 2 sides, living room, fireplaces, bedrooms, knocking walls down, moving sewage pipes, rainwater drains, roofing, digging foundations (i ran the digger ) but fitting the new kitchen .... DH and i are balking at that. DH is no carpenter and it's a big room. It's got to hold up stone worktops ... My eldest DD's boyfriend dabbles in carpentry. He makes tables/desks ect. Do you think that level of skill is enough to fit the DIY kitchens? I'd rather give him the 1k for fitting if he can do it than give it to a random kitchen local fitter who i've plucked off the internet!

This morning i had to ring DIY accounts dept because they emailed to say could i pay over the phone for sample. I did and i asked if i could send in Magnet's design for my kitchen instead of doing their online thing and she said yes and gave email address for that. :) :) Yay!

I am i'm worried about the price of delivery. It's a 16/18 unit kitchen and a long way to here from there. Magnet are charging 14,500 for kitchen plus appliances plus fitting but no worktop. We'll see what DIY charge - baring in mind i have to get my own appliances (i think) and my own fitter.

I've been looking at lots of other Cashmere's from other companies. Often they are a bespoke colour you have to pay more for and in fact most of them look a little washed out compared to DIY's cashmere.

For anyone interested if you google 'DIY kitchens mumsnet' lots of really helpful threads pop up.

This is our plan:

Chasingsquirrels · 05/05/2021 13:31

Delivery is a standard charge I think. It seems a bit "grr" to have to pay a couple of hundred for delivery when you are paying thousands for the units but just factor it into the overall cost and it isn't much.
I'm in Cambridgeshire and had 18 units plus bits - integral doors, plinths, end boards etc delivered at the standard cost.

TBH I'd rather source my own appliance than buy off a kitchen company.

I used Worktops Direct for my wood laminate worktop.

I would expect someone with reasonably carpentry skills to be able to fit, but it's the finishing touches, making sure everything is spot on etc that makes it. DP put my old kitchen in the garage, no real problems fitting it, but ensuring the doors are start didn't happen as I wasn't bothered in there.

Twospaniels · 05/05/2021 14:06

We got a matt black floor which I regret. It looks great clean but I have two dogs and despite wiping their feet, there are pawprints and just general dog dust, but the worst thing is one of my dogs has a ‘drippy willy’ sorry TMI. Checked by vet, perfectly normal lubricant discharge, but the drips really show up on the floor.

Previous floor tile was terracotta coloured and the drips didn’t show. In fact I didn’t know it was even a thing!

When we changed the kitchen my husband didn’t want to change the floor but I persuaded him and now I can’t say that I don’t like it!

Laiste · 05/05/2021 19:35

Well, i have to say, of all the possible circs., problems with a drippy willy has to be the most unforeseen GrinGrin Thank you Twospaniels. Plain black seems to be just a problematic as plain white.

Chasingsquirrels, thank you. Yes i know what you mean re: delivery charge. I said exactly the same to DH over dinner earlier - in the scheme of saving x,y,z thousand pounds going with DIY, a couple of hundred delivery charge isn't too bad Grin

We have a matt black dark grey tile and it is a nightmare, it has permanent stains, I just don't understand it! I don't know how to clean it.

Our worktop is a ceramic worktop, cant remember the brand now, you can put anything it and it doesn't mark or stain, its light grey and it looks fab, Howeve,r we have an inset sink and I have chipped the edge three times now, just putting stuff into the sink.

I think it is also the cause of the horrendous echo in our kitchen.

Cosmos45 · 05/05/2021 19:48

If you don't live in the country, don't have pets or children then a white floor is "ok".. But on a serious note, the only advice I have ever wanted to pass on is DO NOT USE ivory grout in your kitchen floor when using stone or similar.. The stones will last years and barely need a sweep over but the ivory grout makes the floor look filthy when it wouldn't have done if I have chosen a dark grey grout.

Laiste · 05/05/2021 20:04

artquejtion sink causes echo!! See, that's another thing you just don't have a hope of foreseeing. I can imagine that completely though. Stone floor, stone worktop, stone sink. I worry about the cold 'feel' as well.

Cosmos45 pets - tick , children - tick , countryside - tick

I really do think i'm going to take the wood floor right through. It's one less choice to make (which tile) at the very least.

SIHastingsLiketheBattle · 05/05/2021 21:23

@Laiste this is a fantastic update! Can't wait to hear what price they come back with Grin

I did fit our kitchen, it was an unplanned project that happened due to flooding. The insurance company paid out enough to replace the damaged floor but not the kitchen so I decided (bar the electrics plumbing and plastering) I'd do the whole thing myself!

So at approx 26 weeks pregnant I fitted our kitchen & a few weeks later laid the flooring Confused it was a bit bonkers but honestly DIY Kitchens is called that for a reason! The kitchens come pretty much ready assembled you just need to fit their legs and doors on, and secure into place. If you have the right tools then it's quite honestly easy - definitely a project for someone who knows their way around woodworking gear. My Dad helped me with the wall cupboards as that is a two person job.

It took me about 5 days total to fit all the cabinets and then we did pay a joiner to come in for a day and fit our (laminate) worktop as I just couldn't lift the weight of it. I made a couple of minor mistakes along the way but looking at the kitchen now you'd never know I put it in myself!

The delivery charge is standard and tbh the delivery guys are fantastic and provide a great service. All around DIY have been superb for customer service both times for us.

No, not the sink, sorry I wasn't clear, I meant the ceramic worktop is likely the cause of the awful echo we have.
HasaDigaEebowai · 06/05/2021 06:48

I think taking the wood right through is a good call. We are going with bamboo instead of wood because it’s more durable and we have a large dog and frequent stiletto wearing visitors and we are taking that through the whole house.

We have wood effect laminate and it’s ace. Polyflor Camero I think it’s called. We’re now getting it throughout the bottom floor of the house as it’s just so bloody easy!
