Relentless cold weather

Anyone else finding the cold never ending and making everything a bit miserable?

I’m fed up of my massive winter coat, and cold walks through parks, getting the kids into 5,000 layers before we leave the house.

I’m sure the weather is normally nicer than this at this point?

I'm totally with you on this. I was thinking a few days ago it still looks and feels like winter ffs!

This time last year, we were in the first lockdown and it was like summer already.

I can't believe it will be May tomorrow and I still have to have the hearing on at home and my car is still needing defrosting on the odd morning 😬

Meredusoleil · 30/04/2021 13:38

Heating not hearing 🤦🏻‍♀️

BarbaraofSeville · 30/04/2021 13:41

Where are you?

Apart from the last few days its been beautiful recently. Mostly dry and some good warm days.

We've had a few afternoons and evenings in the garden here and had suncream out etc.

Fruityfriday · 30/04/2021 13:43

Its Global Warming

homesickinscotland · 30/04/2021 13:44

yeah it's freezing here too. I miss living in a country which had warm weather all year round. Find the british winters - which seem to last over half the year - really tough going.

murbblurb · 30/04/2021 13:45

Sun was out earlier and it was very warm. Do you live in some trendy spot in a rain belt?

Science isn't an MN strong point but as it is late April, uv levels are high.

idontlikealdi · 30/04/2021 13:47

Pretty cold here but I've packed away the winter clothes. I hate wearing winter coats / boots so I'm just cold!

ToryStelling · 30/04/2021 13:47

To be fair it’s been pretty mild here the last couple of weeks (North West). It got to 17-18 degrees a few times. The temperature has really dropped again this week though.

It does seem quite chilly for this time of year. My Timehop app keeps showing me pics of us sat in the garden this time last year when we were in lockdown!

Hfjshdhs · 30/04/2021 13:52

@BarbaraofSeville I’m SW London. So not exactly north Scotland!

It’s 13 degrees today. Think it’s because I’m spending all days outside with the kids I’m feeling it particularly badly!

OP posts:
Boood · 30/04/2021 13:54

I think it’s actually only a couple of degrees below average for this time of year, but those couple of degrees matter!

Swingoutsistersledge2 · 30/04/2021 13:56

I know what you mean . NE here.
Hung my washing out earlier and my fingers were freezing . Heating is on too .

poorbuthappy · 30/04/2021 13:57

I have just put my heating on.
We had a snow shower earlier.

I'm SW London too OP!

Apparently it's going to be rainey for the next 5 days or so. Even worse. Cold and wet 😏

megletthesecond · 30/04/2021 13:58

Yes. I'm still in gloves for running.
Hampshire and heating on.

My plants are in limbo, they need a burst of heat to get going.

MsTSwift · 30/04/2021 13:59

Even if it’s sunny it’s still cold 🙄. Still in big winter coat and scarf. Hate it - craving warmth

Babdoc · 30/04/2021 14:00

We had hailstones briefly yesterday, up here in Scotland! But it’s been glorious warm sunshine most days. Today is the first day I’ve felt really chilly in ages - it’s grey and wet.

Peanutbutterandbananatoastie · 30/04/2021 14:02

So annoying isn’t it? Every time it gets sunny I think that’s it now it’s properly nice then the next day is bloody freezing. There’s not a gentle raising/lowering of temperatures in spring/autumn is there? It’s just hot or cold on and off until one of them sticks. Just choose a season damn you.

BikeRunSki · 30/04/2021 14:02

21 years ago when we got married at the end of April, we had the phone number of the snowplough man, who had to dig DH out to get to our wedding.(Sheffield)

Until a couple of days ago, we’d had about 3 weeks of warm dry weather (between Leeds and Sheffield). This time last year, when Cpt Tom was walking up and down his garden, we were having a heatwave.

April is a funny month.

JassyRadlett · 30/04/2021 14:12

Science isn't an MN strong point but as it is late April, uv levels are high.

Medium, in London at least, according to the Met Office. Ditto for the next 5 days, maximum.

OP, I think the issue is that while we often get this kid of weather in April/May it’s usually more variable, so we get more lovely days (and slightly warmer days!) than we’ve had this year. Apart from three lovely warm days it’s been pretty much the same with the only recent variable being ‘oh, it’s also raining.’ It’s the relentless monotony of ‘yep, still chilly’ that’s getting me this year.

I definitely remember more than once coming back from an Easter trip home to Australia and thinking ‘12 degrees and raining, bloody typical English May weather’ but in a few days it would have sparked up again and be in the high teens at least. This year late April/early May is just a long procession of 12/13 degree max forecasts.

SingingSands · 30/04/2021 14:13

It hammered down with hailstones yesterday. I was sitting in the kitchen working, wearing my coat. It's 8 degrees here now, spitting with rain, occasionally sunny. But eight degrees. It was warmer in February!

Not that I'm a fashionista (by a long shot), but seeing shops and Instagram covered in summer outfits makes me feel cheated! We really were spoiled with the weather last year.

TokyoSushi · 30/04/2021 14:14

Yep, freezing here. I remember on VE day last year sitting out in shorts & t-shirt and remembering that it has been really warm for quite a while! Still heating on and my winter coat here!

Eyevorbig0ne · 30/04/2021 14:17

I'm in the south east. It's been bloody freezing for ages. Average 10 degrees with North wind so feels like 4 degrees (but no rain). That's even with sun.
Still have heating on (my hands stop working when they're purple and rigid) as I wfh. Need it off as pricey.
Still wearing a long padded coat and fur lined boots.
My flowers are behind compared to last year.
Fed up with it.
At least it's lighter!

JassyRadlett · 30/04/2021 14:17

I think there is also a wide variation of what people consider ‘warm’.

To me, if I have to wear a coat rather than a jacket/blazer during the day at all it is not warm. If I have to wear a jacket all day it is also probably not warm.

But then to me it can’t be called ‘hot’ until it’s above 27 or 28 degrees. And I know a lot of people have a much lower threshold for ‘hot’ than that, and therefore feel delightfully warm at 13 degrees.

Though other people on MN a probably agree with the definition but dispense with their coats when it’s 10 degrees colder!

FourTeaFallOut · 30/04/2021 14:18

Yeah. I'm in the N.E, we had hailstones yesterday, it was 4c when I got up this morning, it's dropping down to 2c tonight. We manage a balmy 9c in-between, the heating is staying on.

ineedaholidayandwine · 30/04/2021 14:18

About 8 degrees here outside York, heating on, managed to get the laundry in the sun this morning but rain arrived at lunchtime so now it's in front of the radiators to finish off.
Last April we were out in tshirts going for allowed walk..
Not much fun when we're still under outdoor only meetings
