Until you turned it over I thought pangolin's foot or deformed, stunted artichoke.

Seeing the other side, I think some kind of fungi. Some have a very jelly-like texture.

Would you be able to cut it in half and photograph OP? Do a post mortem!

The sauce is probably pre-cooked at the factory - could it be something burnt? From when it was cooked? Like a charred vegetable? I don't know, grasping at straws here.
