Condiments

What condiments do you ALWAYS have in
your cupboard/fridge and would feel slightly panicked not having them available?

My essentials are (in no specific order):

  • Mayonnaise
  • Dijon Mustard
  • Tomato Ketchup
  • HP sauce
  • Franks Red Hot Sauce
  • Siracha
  • Soy Sauce/Tamari
  • Liquid Smoke
  • Mushroom Ketchup
  • Worcestershire Sauce
  • Wholegrain Mustard
  • Kimchi

Not sure they qualify as condiments but I always have Fish Sauce, Gochujang, Chinese cooking wine and various vinegars (balsamic/red/white wine/cider) plus a standard veg oil and some nice Olive/Rapeseed for dressings.

Is there any fabulous condiment I'm missing that's a game changer?

Ketchup, soy sauce, English mustard and wholegrain mustard (but mustards as cooking ingredients only as no one likes them) Mint sauce and mint jelly in the fridge too. They get used so rarely that I bin them and re-buy when the date is too far past.

I do have a bottle of Lee & Perrins that I bought many, many years ago but haven't checked if it's actually off yet. It's just there. Waiting.

I did have HP brown sauce in for when my dad visited a few times a year. He passed away recently so it's in the bin now.

We're not big on condiments here. I have a sweet chilli sauce in for making bang bang chicken on occasion.

Ducksurprise · 26/04/2021 19:51

English and European Mayo (normally Polish)
Salad cream
Hp fruity

DeRigueurMortis · 26/04/2021 19:52

Oh I forgot Mint Sauce - probably because I'm the same a you.

I buy it and it lurks at the back of the fridge until it's past it's sell date.

I really should start making my own when I actually need it....red current jelly is similarly a condiment that's a wasteful one use buy...

@OhRene your Lea & Perrins will have simply matured!

DustyMaiden · 26/04/2021 19:54

Horseradish, I like it in mash with braised steak.

LemonRoses · 26/04/2021 19:58

We seem to have a fridge full.
Mayonnaise after I’ve made some and until used up.
Ketchup
Mushroom ketchup
Worcestershire sauce
Dijon, English, French mustard
Horseradish
Wasabi
Soy sauce.
Ketjup Mananis
Chutneys
Siracha

Mint sauce and tartare I’d make my own. Salad dressing I’d make.

EventuallyDistracted · 26/04/2021 20:00

I always have in;

tomato ketchup
English mustard
Dijon mustard
Grainy mustard
Salad cream
BBQ sauce
Mint sauce
Mango chutney
Some other sort of chutney
Usually another salad dressing

Then for cooking:
Dark and light soy sauce
Liquid smoke
Worcestershire sauce
White wine vinegar
Balsamic vinegar
Fish sauce
Redcurrant jelly

I buy mayo occasionally but don't eat it very often and no one else likes it. No one eats brown or HP sauce.

Matured? It'll be getting a free bus pass and a pension soon I reckon! Grin

EventuallyDistracted · 26/04/2021 20:01

Oh yes, tartare sauce, although sometimes I do just stir chopped capers through mayo.

Slub · 26/04/2021 20:01

I live with people who absolutely need their condiments/sauces over the actual food.
All spice
Southern Fried Spice
Worcestershire Sauce
Henderson's Sauce
Garlic Mayonnaise
Minted Mayonnaise
Chilli and Garlic Mayonnaise
Tomato Ketchup
Brown Ketchup
BBQ Ketchup
Smokey BBQ Ketchup
Hmm

Slub · 26/04/2021 20:03

Forgot
Mint Sauce
Apple Sauce
Mustard x several variety

DeRigueurMortis · 26/04/2021 20:06

I've just googled Henersons...

Sounds great (to someone who loves mushroom ketchup and Worcestershire).

I might have to look out for that.

As a pp I tend to make my own Tartare Sauce - in which basis I should probably admit I always have a jar of capers in the fridge.

Crystal/Franks hot sauce
Mild ajvar
Mayo (Hellman’s only!)
Ketchup
2/3 mustards
Worcestershire sauce
Crispy shrimp chilli oil
Polish pink sauce (goes with everything, I am addicted)
Black vinegar for dumplings/take out
Soy sauce
Tabasco
Redcurrant jelly or cranberry
Anchovies - not really a condiment but I put them in everything.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 26/04/2021 20:11

Homemade tartare sauce is the business...

I have everything on your list but others I'd add are:
Tabasco
Chipotle flavoured Tabasco
Sambal oelek
Tamarind sauce
Chinese rice vinegar

I'll see if I can think of any more

ALevelhelp · 26/04/2021 20:12

Ketchup
Sweet chilli sauce
BBQ sauce
Mayo
Salad cream
Nando's perinaise
Pickle
Relish - we have a couple on the go
Cranberry sauce
Tartare sauce

DeRigueurMortis · 26/04/2021 20:13

Chipotle flavoured Tabasco
Sambal oelek
Tamarind sauce

I'm liking the sound of these!!!

Mayo (I make it because I don't like any bought ones)
Henderson's Relish
Encona chili sauce
Ketchup
Lime pickle.

EventuallyDistracted · 26/04/2021 20:15

I forgot, alway have sweet chilli sauce too

SwimmingOnEggshells · 26/04/2021 20:18

They're all amazing OP! My kids don't like spicy food so I lash the chipotle Tabasco on anything Mexican flavoured.

The tamarind sauce is great for South Indian curries or for pad thai

Sambal oelek is very like siracha but a thicker texture

You should see my kitchen cupboards they're absolutely stuffed to the gills Grin

partyatthepalace · 26/04/2021 20:19

Nice selection.

olive paste and Creamed horseradish are essentials to me, also the anchovy paste things are good.

And pesto - I know not exactly a condiment but I use it like one a lot of the time.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 26/04/2021 20:21
