I survived Couch to 5k week 1, run 1!

After contemplating doing C25k for a whole year, today I completed run 1 and survived. Still cannot imagine being able to run for 30 minutes in 9 weeks time though.
About half way through I had some pain on my inner ankle of right foot and the instep of my left foot, not sure if it's down to inexperience or shoe related.

Well done, you! Do some easy stretching and have a warm soak. Keep going but make sure you don't injure yourself. Congrats!

RandomMess · 24/04/2021 18:23

Well done I'm only a week ahead of you after having to quit last year due to excruciating knee pain! Have been doing regular physio given exercises to hope I can survive this time around.

I am focusing on one run at a time!

Waitingfirgodot · 24/04/2021 18:42

Well done! I started in December and ran my first 10km last week! Keep it up!

I’ve just started this too!! Run 3 tomorrow and my legs hurt so much! X

Thesagacontinues · 24/04/2021 18:49

Its something I've always wanted to do but never started. Well done OP.

Mysterian · 24/04/2021 18:58

For the first 6 weeks I never imagined that I'd be able to do the next one. I did. Trust in the program. It was designed by sports-boffins. It works.

wlv12 · 24/04/2021 19:05

Well done!

I’m on week 8 and felt exactly like you in week 1. There have been times I’ve felt I can’t do it and want to give up but I’m running for 28 minutes straight now Smile

usedandabusedx1000 · 24/04/2021 19:15

I survived the same OP, we could be buddies?! I also can’t imagine being able to run for 30mins 😩

altlife · 24/04/2021 19:20

I've stopped and started many times I annoy myself 😫

I was contemplating restarting on Monday. Having read this post I think i just might!

(Although there is still one day in between..)

Keep going x

usedandabusedx1000 · 24/04/2021 19:21

I nearly gave up half way but pushed to finish, trouble is I ate more than ever afterwards

helpfulperson · 24/04/2021 19:27

Well done. I agree with others that you will be amazed at what you can manage, the programme works. BUT if you find you can it is fine to repeat a week or just keeping doing week one for a while until your body gets used to the whole concept of exercise. Particularly if you are overweight it can be hard on the joints.

Lululu22 · 24/04/2021 19:27

Oh well done! You will definitely get to the final week and be running for 30 mins. If you find you need to repeat a week, just do. I’ve done it a couple of times and am putting of starting again but maybe your post — and— —my— —jeans— —which— —are— —too— —tight—, will inspire me to just get on with it!

helpfulperson · 24/04/2021 19:28

Can't!

Lululu22 · 24/04/2021 19:28

Oops, my strike-throughs didn’t work but you get the picture!!

Onedropbeat · 24/04/2021 19:29

I started in January and last week complete week 9,
I repeated a few weeks.
It’s been a real achievement and it’s made me have confidence that i can do things if I want to try

It’s also helped work off those extra mini eggs over Easter

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 24/04/2021 19:31

Well done on doing the first day. It’s a big step. I’ve just done day one week 2. It was harder than week one but survivable. Don’t know how I’m going to do week 3 yet but I figure one day at a time.

MrsCaptainJakeBallard · 24/04/2021 19:31

Well done! I never thought I would have been able to do it but did & now love running, I run about 6/7km three times a week now.

Keep going & like pp said if you feel you need to repeat a week do it. I found it strangely addictive doing it Confused and loved getting a bit further each week.

BogRollBOGOF · 24/04/2021 19:31

Well done!

It does work. I was always beyond hopeless at running at school. I still remember the elation that I'd actually run for 8 mins, the longest in my life at about 4 weeks in.

Some runs will feel harder than others. This is a universal truth of running.
Slow down. Really slow down. It's the running motion that counts not speed.
It's OK to repeat a run if you feel you need to before moving up a week.
If you're using an app and based on time, you're unlikely to reach 5k in the 30 mins. It's a pretty fast pace that takes practice. Running for 30 mins is a pretty amazing achievement anyway.

Hope it all goes smoothly

Dentistlakes · 24/04/2021 19:32

Good for you op! It’s a great program and you will be running for 30 minutes straight by the end. I completed it last sept and run 25 miles a week now and hope to do a half marathon later this year.

The best advice I had was to run as slowly as you need to and if you need to repeat a run then do so. Just keep working through the weeks.

2020nymph · 24/04/2021 19:35

I've just finished week 1 today. I'm so unfit and didn't manage the full amount of run time but I do feel better for it.

Cavagirl · 24/04/2021 19:38

Well done OP!!! I finished a couple of months ago and am now regularly running 5k. It feels like yesterday I was looking at the runs in W2 thinking - I can't run 90 seconds. Stick with it and you will be able to do it. The programme really works
Come join us over on the C25k Encouragement thread (that goes for everyone! We're very friendly!!)

Bumpinthenight · 24/04/2021 19:43

Well done!

I started last week. I was told to start running and three steps later I went arse over tit! I got up and sacked off the first run. Pissed about during runs 2-7 and then ran the full last minute! The next two runs I ran all of the minute runs and this morning I completed all of Week 2 Run 1 - didn't think I had it in me.

I am not a runner so I am really impressed with me! Rather wishing I'd started with 'couch to kitchen' though Grin

DobbyIsAFreeElf · 24/04/2021 21:35

It's good to hear that the programme works. Annoyingly I'm one of those people that don't get the 'feel good' feeling after doing exercise so I rewarded myself by ordering pizza and chips. It's a start though and I'm hoping I'll be able to continue.
Only took the plunge this week because I'm on annual leave and decided now is the best time as I don't have to plan my runs around my shifts as I work 12 1/2 hour days or nights. I'll probably end up doing run 2 on Tuesday and 3 on Thursday.

OP posts:
Donatella · 24/04/2021 21:45

Well done! I started on Jan 1st and completed it pretty much bang on 9 weeks later. I'm obese and was doing no other exercise so it is absolutely doable. I can now run 5k in just over 40mins and love it!

KinseyWinsey · 25/04/2021 08:03

I'm on week 5 (again).

I always want a chip butty after doing each session.

I do look forward to the runs although I believe I've a 20 minute run coming up this week. Eeeeek.

I'll be happy when I'm back up to 5k again like last summer. It's amazing. I am so not a runner but this programme got me there.

Remember it doesn't matter how fast you're going. It matters that you just keep going!
