How many nights a year can you sit out in your garden without freezing to death?

Last year we sat out once. It had been a boiling hot day and it was still warm into the evening. That is very rare though. It’s been a lovely day here today but it would be freezing to sit out as it’s too windy now.

I’m thinking of all those outdoor get togethers that are allowed. I couldn’t have one in my garden as it would be too cold. Maybe if you get the evening sun it would be better but the sun moves from my garden by 4pm.

From about the middle of July to middle of august the sun is still warm enough at the top of the garden where we have a small deck. We eat out then. The rest of the time it’s either too dark or too cold!

AbstractHeart · 23/04/2021 19:14

Surely it's fine as long as everyone dresses appropriately?

Caspianberg · 23/04/2021 19:19

Loads, we use our garden a lot actually, even in winter.

Winter it’s more a stand up gathering with hot soups and mulled wine. Fire pits

From May-Oct it’s generally warm enough where we are to sit out. Obv some days it’s pouring or windy. But probably 90% time possible. In peak summer we barely close door and eat most meals outside and evenings.

Get a jumper on. It’s fine Grin

Ted27 · 23/04/2021 19:21

Every day if I really wanted to, with the right clothes.
probably only torrential rain would put me off

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 23/04/2021 19:23

I'm in North East Scotland. I enjoyed my 5 minute sit out yesterday. That's about it for the year, I reckon!

cushioncovers · 23/04/2021 19:23

Only rain and bitter wind keeps me from sitting outside with a cup of tea. I just wrap up warm.

HerRoyalNotness · 23/04/2021 19:24
  1. But we roast to death about 90 of those days.
MiaowMiaow99 · 23/04/2021 19:24

Never warm enough for me.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/04/2021 19:24

Get a fire pit or chiminea.

AgathaX · 23/04/2021 20:03

We sit out in winter. Dress appropriately, sometimes use a heater. I'd go stir crazy sitting in the same room all year. I like listening to the birds, watching the sky change, looking at the stars.

Flaunch · 23/04/2021 20:05

We’ve already sat out in the evenings several times this year and expect to do it most evenings in the summer. I’ve got a big piles of fleeces especially for it!

garlictwist · 23/04/2021 20:09

I've just come home from sitting outside the pub on my street as I was on the verge of getting hypothermia.

Sparklingbrook · 23/04/2021 20:10

I like the idea of sitting out in the evening but I just get cold, the lights attract the moths and bitey insects.
I make the most of sitting outside during the day when the weather is warm, but never sit in the sun.

Moonface123 · 23/04/2021 20:11

Plenty of layers of its chilly and a nice blanket or throw.
It's very peaceful when not so many others out, a nice warm drink helps as well, even if just for a few minutes, I like sitting out at dusk, just as all my little fairy lights come on.

User0ne · 23/04/2021 20:12

"there's no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing"

Another all year rounder here.

ParkheadParadise · 23/04/2021 20:16

I'm in Scotland I would probably need my puffa jacket, hot water bottle, scarf and gloves to sit in the garden after 5pm 😉

caringcaroline · 23/04/2021 20:17

People need to say, broadly, where they are and the typical lifestyle they have for responses to make any sense.

I'm in Northern England.I've camped loads and need to be outside at least once a day or else I feel a bit odd.

So, I'd sit outside with appropriate gear on and a firepit and hot drink/alcohol to socialise with friends. On my own, it'd need to be a bit warmer. The summer season is so short up here, it happens only about 2 weeks of the year.

LemonRoses · 23/04/2021 20:18

We use outside a lot. It tends to make for a slightly earlier finish but we’ve done it throughout, whenever friends were allowed to gather.
We have a fairly sheltered terrace, and pop a small marquee over that. We’ve an old wood burner and a kaddai bowl to offer some heating.
Then some garden blankets and we’re toasty

ShutUpAlex · 23/04/2021 20:18

We sat out in the garden cuddled up last night till about 11 with a lovely fire going. We do this most evenings it’s lovely.

Pemberleys · 23/04/2021 20:19

I'm in Scotland, we've had a few evenings in the garden in just jumpers so far this year. Just need appropriate clothing!

MegaClutterSlut · 23/04/2021 20:25

I live in the SE, we get boiling hot weather in the summer which I hate so practically live outside in the evening to try and cool down so quite a lot of evenings spent outside tbh

TheMoth · 23/04/2021 20:35

N Wales. About 3.

Last time, I had 5 layers on, a blanket, coat, sleeping bag, shitload of gin in me and a firepit. That's about the level of warmth I need.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 23/04/2021 20:36

Loads! I have a gorgeous South facing garden. I always bring some blankets outside for when the temperature drops but it is still lovely.

Sparklingbrook · 23/04/2021 20:38

I'm in Worcestershire. We have the garden furniture, some solar lights and it looks all very nice. If friends come round we could sit out until it goes dark perhaps, until the insects/bats appear, but I wouldn't sit out there after or on my own.

The grown up DC don't seem to care too much and will stay outside half the night with their friends which suits me. Grin These are the same DC who didn't wear a coat for the whole of High School though.
