How many nights a year can you sit out in your garden without freezing to death?

Last year we sat out once. It had been a boiling hot day and it was still warm into the evening. That is very rare though. It’s been a lovely day here today but it would be freezing to sit out as it’s too windy now.

I’m thinking of all those outdoor get togethers that are allowed. I couldn’t have one in my garden as it would be too cold. Maybe if you get the evening sun it would be better but the sun moves from my garden by 4pm.

Last year it was baking hot from about early April...I had to have a fan in the kitchen.

Maybe buy a jumper?

Fairystory · 23/04/2021 20:45

There's plenty of summer evenings that are warm enough to sit out but then I get bitten, get infected and end up on antibiotics so no evenings outside for me.

lynsey91 · 23/04/2021 20:48

I don't think its ever really warm enough to sit out in the evening even when it has been a pretty warm day.

I love it when you are abroad and it has been hot during the day (usually too hot for me) but the evenings are lovely and you can sit out in short sleeves.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 23/04/2021 20:49

It depends where you live Grin.

Within the UK the average summer temperature varies enormously.

I'd say on average, even in the sunny south east, that it's probably only warm enough to sit out until after sundown on about 20 nights a year if that. It's hardly the Mediterranean!

TheDoctorDances · 23/04/2021 20:51

South facing garden with little shade. I’m in the Midlands and can sit outside February - October when we get nice days.

It was so hot in the day some of last year I was hiding inside with all the curtains shut. Grin

If we get a decent summer (like last year), then sitting outside is cooler than indoors in the evening.
Don' think much of people with fire-pits etc burning smokey fuel to pretend it's warm - go inside.

UniversitySerf · 23/04/2021 20:58

We have a corner sofa it has the fence on two sides a screen on the other and small piece of screening on the other. Cuts the wind down, we also have fake fur throws. One of the nicest nights last year was stargazing on a really cold clear night, the star could be seen more than usual. We wore onesies and coats:) as long as it’s not too damp it’s ok.

FunnyWonder · 23/04/2021 21:16

None. Am in NI with a north facing garden, which seems to have its own self contained cyclone. We are very high up and pretty exposed. I feel like Scott of the Antarctic every time I set foot out the back door. I couldn't believe the difference when we stayed with relatives in Gloucestershire. We were out getting pissed on the patio until all hours and it was lovely.

Zenithbear · 23/04/2021 22:58

We sat out with friends tonight until gone 9pm when they had to leave. No fire pit or blankets needed, no one was cold.
So from about now until October ish.

HollyHocks13 · 23/04/2021 23:00

Most evenings between May and September, unless it's raining. I think it depends where you live though and what your garden is like. I'm in the South West (Devon) and we have a very small but sheltered SW facing garden. We use it as an extra living room in the summer.

DipSwimSwoosh · 23/04/2021 23:01

We always had NYE and Bonfire Night in our garden. This time we had a few Christmas garden gatherings, and on March 29th when we could. We tend to have a chiminea or fire pit on colder nights but don't bother in Summer. It's fine unless it's raining.

Doghead · 23/04/2021 23:06

North West here.. We were out in our back garden until around 9pm tonight. Sadly, we lose the sun on the back at around 4.00pm but we do get it on the front until it goes down. It is rare for us to sit in the back so late, but it was really warm tonight

Cherrysoup · 23/04/2021 23:18

We sat out loads last year. The weather was great. Regardless of weather, we sit in the hot tub, which is strictly for talking/star gazing.

Certainly wasn't baking hot from April in the East Midlands.

I can remember that at the end of May and beginning of June it was so cold we had the heating on for short periods.

We did have about a week of awful very hot weather in August but other than that the weather really was not that warm

EcoCustard · 25/04/2021 11:15

We have eaten outside quite a few times already this year. And will do most evenings now unless raining. We have had breakfast a few times too.

We spend a lot of time outdoors and designed our garden for it, lovely terrace, brick built pizza oven, bbq, veg patch, herb planters around it. We have a outdoor pool too as our spring and summer just gets hotter. We wrap up on cooler nights or have blankets and still eat lunch out in November if not blowing a Gale or rainy. Our back garden is very hot and sunny and we are in the East Midlands. The less time spent inside, the better.

BogRollBOGOF · 25/04/2021 11:30

Our garden is quite exposed to the prevailing wind, so doesn't tend to retain the heat unless there is a pretty warm air temperature. Our previous garden was more sheltered which helped.

Some years back, a friend had a little yard/ courtyard garden that was very sheltered and with a bbq/ chimnea was good for dry weather until Halloween. I loved hanging out in that garden!

One of the things I love about camping is lounging on the chairs by the bbq/ fire and watching the stars come out. Great way to spend an evening.

Silverfly · 25/04/2021 11:33

Last night we had friends over and we sat outside on the patio until gone 11pm (due to covid regulations obvs - normally we'd have gone inside). We had a fire pit and we all wore coats. It was fine.

Bluntness100 · 25/04/2021 11:34

Quite a lot. We are in the south east and we have a fire pit. During late spring summer and early autum we have all our meals out there and usually if socialising we sit out late, we light a fire if it’s chilly but often just because people like sitting round it.

Chemenger · 25/04/2021 11:39

We sat out last night until about 9pm, central belt of Scotland. It was chilly, we had a fire going for the last hour and blankets. Remembered too late that hot water bottles would have been a good idea. Last year we ate out most evenings over the summer, our patio is sheltered and a sun trap and I wouldn’t say we are particularly hardy. I will be starting to have my early morning cup of coffee outside soon.

GiantKitten · 25/04/2021 11:42

Not many here - in E Lancs, with a very short E-facing paved back yard. Last bit of sun disappears by 5pm.

Having said that I can remember quite a few genuinely warm evenings in that amazing weather in spring and early summer last year, but that was unusual.

TheBullfinch · 25/04/2021 11:45

Usually May to September as i have a North facing garden but i was out late in April last year due to the heatwave.

Im in the Midlands though so generally warm and no sea breezes to contend with.

Could you get a patio heater or some blankets?

Silvergreen · 25/04/2021 11:46

In London. I can sit out for maybe 50 days of the year or so.

TheBullfinch · 25/04/2021 19:42

Sigh. Another thread where the poster is missing in action. Why bother?

DinosApple · 25/04/2021 21:09

I feel the cold so wouldn't choose to sit out ever - but we do when we're camping.

I went to a friend's last night, there was a firepit and I wore thermal tights, socks, fur lined leggings topped with jeans, plus a long sleeved thermal vest, thick chenille jumper, coat and woolly hat, plus blanket. And trainers - they were the mistake - sheepskin boots would have been better.

My feet were frozen by 11pm and like ice blocks when I walked home at midnight.

Today I had to wash all the smokey layers with a slight headache Grin.
