What's your most upsetting tv death?

Just watching Bones for the first time and absolutely gutted about Sweets which made me wonder which other tv deaths have upset MNers.

Lots of potential for spoilers here so apologies in advance.

Roger in His Dark Materials was gut wrenching

RulerForRuler · 23/04/2021 20:50

The first death I remember was John Archer in The Archers. I was very young so I did not realise at first that he had died. His Dad ,Tony says "Oh, you are freezing" and wraps his coat around him to keep him warm. I thought that meant that he was still alive. I was devastated when my mum explained that he had died.

Amazing how many have said Joyce's death in 'The Body' when Buffy is largely forgotten these days

Is it? My teen is on her second watch, and most of her friends have watched it or are aware of it.

I rewatched ER recently and it struck me that one of the characters that I remember best- Lucy Knight- was in it for such a short time. Great writing and great acting, almost a minor part in the scheme of the whole series but bloody hell she made a big impression. Not just because she died either.

Romano’s death always annoyed me. Brilliant character but his death was a bit farcical.

Definitely Barbara in Call the Midwife.

On Emmerdale, when Edna's dog Batley died sad

Same. It was nice though when the storyline won at that year's British Soap Awards and Shirley Stellfox (Edna) brought him up on stage with her. Ahh, Batley's okay!

pasinphoebe · 23/04/2021 20:53

Edgar in 24 .. he didn’t get into the safe chamber in time. Not sure which series.

My DH was traumatised by Joe DuBois’ death in Medium Sad

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 23/04/2021 20:54

Jared Duff (Richard Crenna, died in real life) on Judging Amy

Shep from Blue Peter... cried for days about that, my first experience of death.

Ricky Mann, Jamie Dow and Pete Twamley on Ultimate Force... Why? WTF did they do that? They were the best characters.

@ByTheStarryNight

Sally Fletcher's husband in Home and Away, mid 1990s. I was a hormonal teenager. He died of melanoma. Put me off sunbathing, so the storyline was effective. My DH had a melanoma years later and thankfully is still here to tell the tale.
It was a bit later than that - early 2000s, I was at uni. It wasn't even the original Flynn - the one that died hadn't been in it too long, but I was so devastated when he died.

And Noah dying not long before him (or possibly not long after - it was a long time ago now)
This was all around the time Kim Hyde was on the show ... who would of course grow up to become Chris Hemsworth. I still can't take him seriously as a proper Hollywood film star.

keeping with the Aussie soap theme - Drew Kirk in Neighbours. That Fucking horse!

Edna Krapappel in The Simpsons. The voice actress had died of cancer so they did a very sweet farewell to her/her character in the episode.

and Years and Years, so unjust

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 23/04/2021 20:57

@WinterIsGone

I remember, I watched the first episode of Spooks, missed the second one: 2002, so back when you used to have to remember to set the video. Went into work to hear everyone talking about a woman being killed in a deep fat fryer, and decided not to watch it again in case something else like that happened. Actually, I was totally traumatised after that as well. Smile
But she didn't die in a deep fat fryer, her face was plunged into it - and then she was (thankfully) shot dead. Gruesome though, definitely. Lisa Falkener was the actress, I think... I get she stays out of kitchen when John's cooking chips!
BloomingBlooms · 23/04/2021 20:57

@Doidontimmm

Mark Edwards in top gun & ER
OMG - I've literally just realised these were the same actors. Both of their deaths stayed with me but my number one is Lisa Faulkener getting her head boiled in fat in Spooks. I don't know if someone else has said this up thread but I believe it is the most complained about scene in BBC history.
NeilBuchananisBanksy · 23/04/2021 21:00
