Just watching Bones for the first time and absolutely gutted about Sweets which made me wonder which other tv deaths have upset MNers.

Lots of potential for spoilers here so apologies in advance.

OP posts:

Deb in Dexter
Dumbledore (in the book)
Mufasa in the Lion King

CheerfulBunny · 23/04/2021 20:27

Amazing how many have said Joyce's death in 'The Body' when Buffy is largely forgotten these days. Its a powerful piece of TV and still makes me feel choked/sick thinking about it 'Mom! MOM!.... Mommy?...'

I couldn't watch the episode of The Tudors where Anne Boleyn is beheaded, just couldn't watch it. Found Wolf Hall really tough as well. She thought Henry would save her at the last minute - but he didn't. And the sword man's dance... brrrr!

Minecraftmadness · 23/04/2021 20:28

@Gregorsgirl

The son at the end of torchwood:children of earth. I was also traumatised by that, God I'd forgotten about that.
Came on to say this - it was bad enough when Ianto died but the son dying was horrific and has always stayed with me. Never felt the same about Captain Jack since.

Most TV deaths make me cry but this one is the one that randomly pops up in my memory and haunts me.

Marley the Labrador in 'Marley and Me'. Cried buckets.

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 23/04/2021 20:29

@Ikeatears

Matthew in Downton. Ruined Christmas that year!

Thankfully I didn't watch it until Boxing Day.

4PawsGood · 23/04/2021 20:29

@hidethexylophone

Russell Tovey's character who drowned in Years and Years - that really stayed with me.

Also all of the Greys anatomy deaths mentioned and Mark Greene!

The Years and Years one was so unexpected somehow. It had the feel that everything was going to be alright. I’m still Sad about that one.
OrDis · 23/04/2021 20:30

Edgar in 24 (season 6 I think although I can’t quite remember). Literally just burst out sobbing!! It was just so cruel- he was too kind to die that way!!

muddyford · 23/04/2021 20:30

And Bambi's Mum. That left me and my sister traumatised for years!

GrouchyKiwi · 23/04/2021 20:30

My Mum refused to have Spooks on in the house after the Deep Fryer incident. It was only the 2nd episode. I had to wait to watch it till I moved here. Grin

This thread is one of those that you can use to tell peoples ages.

Gant, Lucy, Mark, and Carter's baby in ER. I have watched all of ER so many times, but there's so many I always find something I've missed. I didn't remember Mark's death at all this time round - but I remembered them all reading the fax.

Billie in Eastenders. The night before leaving for boot camp, he died of alcohol poisoning. It was so shocking and unexpected - and like someone else said, just pointless.

More recently it was everyone but especially Colin in It's a Sin. That was amazing tv but harrowing.

Poussey in OITNB was sad but not unexpected. For a couple of series every single storyline mirrored something in the news. It was Pennsatucky's completely needless death after overdosing, in the very last episode I think, that really got me.

DreamingOfTheSouthOfFrance · 23/04/2021 20:31

Adding my yes to Josh's ENTIRE family in Casualty in the late 90s. I never watched it again!

bluebluezoo · 23/04/2021 20:31

It was Vincent Nigel-Murray in Bones that did it for me, not Sweets.

Fred in Angel.
Lucy in ER

I cried my eyes out when Inspector Morse died of a heart attack in the grounds of a church in Cambridge... classical / orchestral music was playing in the background as he fell and lay down... it was so real and the even sadder thing is John Thaw (who played Inspector Morse) who I loved and he was a brilliant actor died in real life just over a year later at only 60 years old, gone too soon...

I remember reading an interview his wife (the fantastic actress Sheila Hancock) did sometime later... she said they'd had lunch and afterwards he went for a walk around the garden, then came in and sat in his armchair ... she went to check on him and thought he'd fallen asleep as he looked so peaceful but sadly he had gone in his sleep... RIP John x

nitsandwormsdodger · 23/04/2021 20:33

All the boys from it's a sin

Threeminis · 23/04/2021 20:35

@HedgePutty

Can’t remember his name but on neighbours Toddies cousin, he died of a brain haemorrhage after getting out of hospital sat smiling in the street at a party. Also a film about evacuees going on the boat to Australia, playing football in the rain on the deck and a kid slides and goes under the railings and into the sea and the ship doesn’t stop. I am now terrified and always check the bottom gap on any boat!
Stingray. That was horrendous.

Also agree with Sonya too, and Gary dying brought a wee tear to my eye.

I'm one of the biggest neighbours fans going. LOVE IT!

bookworm14 · 23/04/2021 20:36

Shireen in Game of Thrones. So upsetting that I stopped watching the show for a while afterwards. Also Joyce in Buffy, Mark Greene in ER, and the deep fat fryer woman in Spooks.

Not sure if anyone’s mentioned Sarah Barnes’s parachute death in hollyoaks, but my god that was traumatising!

vampirethriller · 23/04/2021 20:36

Morse. And I can't watch Nana dying in the Royle Family, it's the song that does it more than anything.

PrelovedWithValue · 23/04/2021 20:38

Showing my age, but Tommy Cooper, during a live TV performance. Awful.

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 23/04/2021 20:39
