Inspired by another thread by HensTeeth44, here is a thread for lovers of fan fiction either writer or just an avid reader.

I do have some unfinished Harry Potter fan fic to share but I'm at working at the moment.

Dont be afraid to share your favourites.

@MrsGulDukat

Sounds good.It might sound mean, but I do like a bit of hurt/angst.

I've got Lucius and Cassie being interviewed by Umbridge.

Tis not everyday you get asked if you've consummated your marriage.

eek - no! How awful.

I'm going to have write Umbridge after they get arrested - she will be one of the leaders of the wizengamot for their trial... she really really hates werewolves ...

MrsGulDukat · 08/05/2021 23:20

Umbridge hates everyone.

But, on the plus side for Cassie, Lucius lies to Umbridge's face. We dont know why yet.

Oh Lucius - I'm sure it's because he has a heart of gold really

Not really a heart of gold, but he feels sympathy for Cassie.

He's a dick and a bit of coward, but he's not a full on arsehole.

Yay. Churned out chapter 3 of my Lucius fic.

bunglebee · 09/05/2021 08:36

Well done @MrsGulDukat!

I've got Tuesday off - I need to work on my portfolio for the course I'm studying but I reckon I can also get another chapter of my own megafic out.

bunglebee · 09/05/2021 08:38

@Empressofthemundane

🥂💐 To all the fanfic writers creating amazing content as a gift for anyone who cares to read it. I read Reylo fics on AO3. I couldn’t ever write one, but I am amazed by all the talent out there.
Thanks empress! I like to think that my fic has at least brightened a few days here and there. My most popular work has been read by more than thirty thousand people. That kind of blows my mind.
MrsGulDukat · 09/05/2021 10:24

My HP fic is already down to page 8 on AO3.

Aint nobody finding that one for a while.

OP posts:
bunglebee · 09/05/2021 11:16

I'll read it later! I'm no good on DS9 but I do know my HP Grin

MrsGulDukat · 09/05/2021 11:22

Thanks @bunglebee

I was up til 4am finishing that fic. I'm gonna be wiped out later.

OP posts:
Icantreachthepretzels · 09/05/2021 12:38

Aint nobody finding that one for a while.

That's why I'm uploading a chapter a day on my HP fic while I've still got a few chapters cushion ahead of me -stops me falling completely out of sight for too long.

MrsGulDukat · 09/05/2021 12:47

I wonder how many good fics get passed over because of it.

I've noticed that my immortal has been added to Ao3.

If that gets more comments and kudos than my fic I swear I'm deleting it.

OP posts:
MrsGulDukat · 09/05/2021 12:53

Now I'm annoyed.

36 comments that shitfic has. 36!!!!

OP posts:
Maggiesgirl · 09/05/2021 13:04

I find I only end up writing dribbles, or scenes that don't always link up. I only write Outlander fanfic tho.

Icantreachthepretzels · 09/05/2021 13:28

Yeah - but My Immortal's famous. They're presumably not comments saying how good it is!

I imagine a lot of good fics get passed over because not enough people see them - especially when the board is as fast moving as the HP one. Plus a lot of people don't even bother reading HP fics any more because of the sheer level of dross they need to wade through to find a good one.

It's why leaving comments and kudos and bookmarking is so important - because people filter by them. But the vast majority of readers don;t engage in any meaningful way.

I guess - as you can't expect help from the people enjoying your story FOR FREE - that's why it's so important to get your tags right. And why updating regularly helps too. Anyone searching a bit or Remus/Sirius angst updated in the past 24 hours will find my fic at the moment, no matter when they search.

People filtering by kudos won't ever find it though - and those who do find it, enjoy it and then don't leave kudos are not helping!

When I search I don't filter by kudos and bookmarks because all that tells me is what other people liked and that it got cut through. I always just do it by last updated and the read the summaries. If the summary looks good I'll click - I don't care if no one else has read it, doesn't mean it's not good!

Now I'm off the read My Immortal. I only ever got through the first chapter before.

MrsGulDukat · 09/05/2021 13:44

If you search for Lucius Malfoy, my fic is only second on the list.

A lot of the comments on My Immortal were thanks for uploading.

It stings to see an awful decade old fan fic doing better than some quality well thought out fics.

OP posts:
Icantreachthepretzels · 09/05/2021 14:33

OK - no - I couldn't get past chapter 4 this time. I know it's a troll fic but it's just so stupid that I don't understand how people can even find the trolling enjoyable.

One thing I do look at more than actual number of kudos is the ratio of comments/kudos/bookmarks to hits. If there are only 100 hits it doesn't mean it's not good, it just means very few people have clicked on it- lack of people clicking can't tell you anything about quality.
But if of those 100 a decent percentage have engaged then that tells me a bit more.

150 bookmarks looks pretty good - but if the story has 50 000 hits it's actually not that good at all.

10 bookmarks is not amazing and is going to be on approximately page 5000 of someone searching by bookmarks - but if there's only been 200 hits it's really not bad at all.

How many chapters/ words vs engagement is another one - a 10 chapter story may have more kudos and comments than a 2 chapter story, but so it should ...doesn't actually mean it's better.

searching by kudos and bookmarks is a bit of a blunt tool really.

But considering My Immortal is as (in)famous as it is - I think engagement with that repost is pretty low. It's always going to get higher engagement than some little fic just starting out (the way a blockbuster movie will get more people going to see it than a little indie one) but 425 hits and 18 kudos over 45 chapters that were posted in December isn't anything to write home about.

Plus the kudos and comments are for the reposter - not for the story itself!

MrsGulDukat · 09/05/2021 14:42

If you look you'll find My Immortal on there atleast twice.

It's lazy taking something someone wrote and you claim to improve it.

Write your own damn fic.

MrsGulDukat · 09/05/2021 15:00

I've just had a comment on my Lucius fic in which pointed out a few questions I now have to answer.

OP posts:
MrsGulDukat · 09/05/2021 15:16

Can i ask when this set? I assumed it must be during the beginning of Deathly Hallows as Cassie went to Bill and Fleur's wedding but then you mentioned she wasn't returning to Hogwarts for her seventh year. I got the impression she was older than Draco when they were interacting but this would make them the same age (which is just double yuck if Lucius has been made to marry a girl the same age as his son - why wouldn't they marry her off to Draco instead?). Plus I thought she was older because she's Percy's girlfriend - Percy is four years older than Harry. But if Cassie is four years older than Harry too then that means Sirius was 16 when he fathered her (maybe 15 when the act itself occurred).

And then there's the mind F* of Cassie and Tonks being like sisters, but Cassie is Sirius' daughter and Tonks will be (possibly already is?) Remus' wife - which makes the whole thing even more cross generational.

I really enjoyed it - but if you've got any light to shed on the ages/ time it's set/ why the ministry didn't just make her marry Percy because he is also a pureblood then I could enjoy it more without all the questions banging around in my head.

Thanks for writing this!

MrsGulDukat · 09/05/2021 15:16

The above is the comment^^

OP posts:
Icantreachthepretzels · 09/05/2021 15:42

Do you have the answers? Or are you just gonna write 'thanks for commenting - now shut up and don't ask questions!' Grin

MrsGulDukat · 09/05/2021 15:43

My response is as follows:

It's set on the 31st July (The day before Bill and Fleurs wedding.)

Cassie herself was born September 1st 1979 (She's 3 years younger than Percy,) making her a bit older than Hermione and just outside the cut off to put her a year above the others.

The reason for marrying her off to Lucius was a deliberate act and it will become clear why later on. Mainly because they dont trust that Draco could manipulate Cassie enough and marrying her off to an older Death eater was a intimidation tactic.

Cassie was born to teen parents, but only after they had left Hogwarts.

Cassie herself was raised by Andromeda and Ted Tonks because her mother had already died by the point Sirius was sent to prison. So Cassie was raised as a Tonks, but out of respect to Sirius, they never changed her name from Black to Tonks.

Percy is a Weasley and the Weasley name is akin to being a mudblood when it comes to a Supremacist Ministry of Magic.

Icantreachthepretzels · 09/05/2021 16:06

Good answer.
Cassie's not had much luck has she? One parent died when they were still pretty much a child themselves and one sent to prison for twelve years ... to then die a couple of years later. And then married to Lucius Malfoy as a child bride.

MrsGulDukat · 09/05/2021 16:10

Yep. She doesnt even know anything about her mother either other than what Andromeda told her. She hasnt even seen a picture of her.

I'll make her happy, just havent decided how yet.
