For lovers of fanfiction...

Inspired by another thread by HensTeeth44, here is a thread for lovers of fan fiction either writer or just an avid reader.

I do have some unfinished Harry Potter fan fic to share but I'm at working at the moment.

Dont be afraid to share your favourites.

Someone just left a comment on my HP story. Another guest - I don't know why guests seem to be so much more interactive than people with accounts, it really doesn't make any sense to me. You would think the people who were motivated enough to sign up would be the ones motivated to leave comments and kudos... but that's not what I'm seeing.

Of course now I'm fretting that because this person liked the story so far they're going to hate what comes next ... I'm never satisfied Grin

MrsGulDukat · 08/05/2021 17:05

We writers never are satisfied.

If I'm not being adored, I ain't happy. 🤣🤣

God I love fanfic. I'm a terrible writer but I read more fanfic than I do books. I've read marvel fic for years, mostly comicverse X men.
I'm into Batman right now. Well Batfamily really. I adore all the Robins!

What are your Ao3 names guys. I want to take a look at your stuff if that's OK? Does anyone use WattPad - I've heard it's not that great

Icantreachthepretzels · 08/05/2021 18:02

@HensTeeth44 I've never used wattpad - I've looked at it and I fundamentally don't understand it. I think it's for 14 year olds so that's probably why. I also think the general quality of writing reflects that age group.

My Ao3 name is myheadsgonenumb - I've only just branched into HP (Sirius/Remus because I'm that predictable) normally I write Angel the Series stuff with some Buffy crossover. And even within Angel my stuff is pretty niche (a rare pair ship not weird kink before anyone gets ideas!) so it's nice writing something more mainstream for once. There is little more mainstream in this world than Sirius/Remus... only Drarry beats it out.

MrsGulDukat · 08/05/2021 18:04

@HensTeeth44

My name is SparklyQuarians.

I've browsed at watpad but not much.

MrsGulDukat · 08/05/2021 18:06

My DD uses watpad and she is 14 so you might be right @Icantreachthepretzels

Oh boy, reveal my secret identity and my early far too florid Glee fic....

I'm shiva_goddessof on AO3.

bunglebee · 08/05/2021 18:17

I lasted ten minutes on Wattpad. The stuff I read was just fundamentally shite and I had no faith I'd find anything better.

MrsGulDukat · 08/05/2021 18:19

@bunglebee

I have shame over some of my early fics. I like to think my writing has improved.

OP posts:
bunglebee · 08/05/2021 18:22

Oh, mine definitely has. I've always had a slight shading towards the purple prose, and I didn't always control it so well.

I basically aspire to write like Hilary Mantel. And for some reason I do compulsively write in the present tense.

MrsGulDukat · 08/05/2021 18:23

I tend to write in past tense. Like a third party is retelling the story.

OP posts:
Icantreachthepretzels · 08/05/2021 18:28

I'm glad I was already pretty old by the time I started writing fanfic so I'm at least spared the most excruciating early fics that some writers will have - stuff they posted on wattpad when they were twelve about Y/N marrying someone from BTS ... But even so, when I look back at my very first fanfic it seems kind of basic (and with loads of typos and grammar errors). I edited it quite a bit when I transferred it from FF.net to Ao3.

I don't know my writing itself has improved - but its got longer!

Icantreachthepretzels · 08/05/2021 18:29

I always write past tense, third person - omniscient narrator. I write what's going on in everyone's head - not just my main character's.

MrsGulDukat · 08/05/2021 18:34

I focus on a few characters around the main character so the story links together.

If I'm doing a romance I want show both sides of it especially if they have different thoughts about it.

OP posts:
Icantreachthepretzels · 08/05/2021 19:13

I tend to write ensemble pieces - so there is no one 'main' character. Not everyone in the wider ensemble will get the same amount of page time and inner monologue but certainly anyone who crops up again and again will have their motivations explored from their own POV. (Fortunately, in Angel, the bad guys know they're bad guys and revel in it so I don't have to try and make their motivations sympathetic.)

And if random dude walking down the street's emotions and thought processes are going to be key to understanding a scene that involves the main characters then that will gets its exploration too.

Essentially, any one who appears on the page could have their head hopped into at any moment. The more important a character is the more likely it is to happen but in a story, everyone is appearing for a reason - no one is actually random - and so that reason could well be explored.

MrsGulDukat · 08/05/2021 21:31

I'm still no further with this Lucius fic. Got a half finished chapter.

OP posts:
Icantreachthepretzels · 08/05/2021 22:38

I'm moving swiftly towards the moment where Remus and Sirius will do the do and am wondering just how much to put in. I've been building up with the mutual pining and breathless glances so to just fade to black seems a bit like I'm short changing readers. But as a general rule I don't write smut and I haven't tagged it for the fic.

It's going to be a delicate balancing act - not too much, not too little.

And then everything is going to come crashing down around their ears and turn to shit ... just because I can.

MrsGulDukat · 08/05/2021 22:40

I find concentrating on the feeling of the act rather than the techincal part of the act is better than going whole hog on some fics.

Sort of, how are Remus and Sirius feeling when they finally give into what they want.

OP posts:
Icantreachthepretzels · 08/05/2021 22:54

Yes I think you're right - that's probably the best. Insert flap A into slot B is always so clunky. I like a bit of hot breath and soft kisses and tickling fingers tracing burning skin but the emotion is what I should bulk it out with. Thanks!

Icantreachthepretzels · 08/05/2021 22:56

Also - you know - I think I might have it be Lupin that actually makes the move. Everyone expects it to be Sirius.

MrsGulDukat · 08/05/2021 22:58

Yeah. Make it Lupin. Poor Sirius is always given the work.

I do wonder how soon is too soon for sexy times in a fic.

Normally my couple are on it by chapter 5 at the latest. I once made it to chapter 11 before sex happened.

OP posts:
Icantreachthepretzels · 08/05/2021 23:06

I'm on chapter eleven and this one is only going to be the hurt/comfort of after the moon and Sirius taking care of Remus' injuries. Nudity and massive longing but nothing more. Whether or not they get down to business in ch12 is really down to Severus. He's hunting them (it's an au where Sirius took Harry from Godric's Hollow and now the three of them are on the run) - and is going to turn up and arrest them the morning after, before they've even managed to get their clothes back on (because I can). So their sexy times is really going to have to fit with where he is on playing Miss Marple.

I'd quite like them to get arrested in ch 13 because - it's 13 but each chapter is only about 3000 words long, I'm already on 11, and Severus has to go to gringotts and get nothing, find a clue, go to ask the daily prophet if they're delivering papers to the two of them (which they are) and be told no - realise the paper is being delivered to them under their nicknames and follow the owl.

And all the while poor Remus and Sirius are in a holding pattern waiting for an opportune moment to fuck!

MrsGulDukat · 08/05/2021 23:09

Sounds good.It might sound mean, but I do like a bit of hurt/angst.

I've got Lucius and Cassie being interviewed by Umbridge.

Tis not everyday you get asked if you've consummated your marriage.

🥂💐 To all the fanfic writers creating amazing content as a gift for anyone who cares to read it.
I read Reylo fics on AO3. I couldn’t ever write one, but I am amazed by all the talent out there.
