For lovers of fanfiction...

Inspired by another thread by HensTeeth44, here is a thread for lovers of fan fiction either writer or just an avid reader.

I do have some unfinished Harry Potter fan fic to share but I'm at working at the moment.

Dont be afraid to share your favourites.

The character I write mainly for, his actor died tragically young - so I don't have to worry about what he would think about the whole thing. But I do worry about his elderly bereaved mother using that there new fangled google machine and stumbling across something eye watering and not being able to look photos of him full in the face for a good six months.

MrsGulDukat · 04/05/2021 15:31

That is why my characters dont do weird shit.

Normal boring sex, yes. Weird tentacle porn type shit, no.

I cant write fan fic about Snape now that Alan Rickman is no longer with us.

Someone left a comment on my WIP Angel fic and now I feel guilty that I've all but abandoned it.

Every time I post a new chapter of my HP fic I get at least one extra subscriber ... but kudos and bookmarks? nope. Just fricking hit the kudos button after you hit the subscribe button! All but one of my kudos have come from guests.

I haven't had a comment in ages. I seem to get a slow trickle of Kudos but rarely any comments.

OP posts:
Icantreachthepretzels · 04/05/2021 21:38

I suppose comments take more effort than kudos. I think the one I got I was essentially a polite 'update soon' which is less of a review and more of a demand - but at least it shows someone cares ...People who leave detailed comments that say exactly what they liked about a chapter are rare gems.

MrsGulDukat · 04/05/2021 21:55

I've had a few in depth comments but mostly there are sorta, "Love this. Hope it continues."

But I rarely even get that now.

I've churned out 2.2k words today! That was a good one.

Icantreachthepretzels · 04/05/2021 22:12

I had a person who would post wonderful reviews after nearly every chapter of my Angel fics - how much she loved them, what she loved about them etc etc ... and then one day she just stopped. Literally I posted a chapter on the friday 'oh my god, this is is amazing, I love it etc etc etc why can't it be time for the next chapter already ...' and then she never came back.
That was on the 70th out of 90 chapters (or 390th chapter out of 410 if you take the series as a whole) - she'd been reading for over a year, she'd drawn some fan art for the story and then ... gone.

I've checked her tumblr - she isn't dead. Just gone. I appreciate everything she did post, but I do wonder why she got so close to the end and then just gave up.

But I do have another commenter who comments with reasonable regularity and did build me a T.V tropes page for my series once it was finished. That was really sweet. I really appreciate them.

Icantreachthepretzels · 04/05/2021 22:13

well done @bunglebee - have some chocolate to celebrate!

MrsGulDukat · 04/05/2021 22:20

@bunglebee

Well done.

I've got some chapter to type up and I cant be arsed.

OP posts:
bunglebee · 04/05/2021 22:41

Thanks @icantreachthepretzels. A bag of Haribo may have already gone into my writing this evening, so more chocolate may not be advisable. And hey, re: your reviewer, better to have loved and lost, eh?

I've had a few really detailed comments on my current fic and I honestly cherish each one. They all come from people invested in a particular 'ship though, one which isn't going to end in hearts and flowers (none are in this particular fic, as it happens). It does take a writer's mind to bad tempting places though. The chapter I've just written is basically 100% banter between the 'ship in question, and it was a ton of fun to write, so I'm hoping for at least a few "great chapter!"s.

MrsGulDukat · 05/05/2021 06:41

Has anyone lost bookmarks for a fic still ongoing?

Does that mean they hate it now?

OP posts:
Icantreachthepretzels · 05/05/2021 11:12

I think I've lost follows and favourites along the way on ff.net. Sometimes it can be an accident and they reappear a few days/ weeks later when they realise. Sometimes it can be because they saved it to read later and have now caught up, if it's been ongoing a long time they might have the left the fandom or if they bookmarked it early on it might just not be the story they thought it was going to be - they don't hate it, it's just not for them.
And that's not even necessarily because your story went somewhere weird and unexpected- they could have fundamentally misunderstood the premise going in.

MrsGulDukat · 05/05/2021 11:17

It's just annoying because you never know why. I can understand if it was a completed fic because they read it and maybe wont read it again.

OP posts:
Icantreachthepretzels · 05/05/2021 12:41

I sometimes lose subscriptions once its completed - which makes. On the Ao3 system it would make more sense to subscribe while it's ongoing and then bookmark at the end if you thought you might want to read it again.
But as subscriptions don't show up publicly, they don't help a fic gain popularity so writers really only care about the bookmarks.

I can't for the life of me work out why people subscribe to one shots or already completed fics. But they do ... it's like they don't know where the bookmark button is!

Anyway - the chapter I'm posting later today has a scene with Sirius in the bath and Remus talking to him and them both trying not to look at each other. It's got mutual pining, it's got slow burn, it's got nudity. If that doesn't get a comment then I am giving up all hope.

MrsGulDukat · 05/05/2021 12:54

I'm working on Lucius fic but I wont hold out hope for it.

It gets read and the tumbleweed.

OP posts:
bunglebee · 05/05/2021 13:25

I did get a small shower of comments overnight! Hooray.

I never really remember to check subscriptions/follows. I'm always slightly surprised at how many people subscribe to a short that's clearly marked as one-part/complete.

MrsGulDukat · 05/05/2021 13:57

@bunglebee

Do you ask for comments?

I might try it and see what happens.

OP posts:
Icantreachthepretzels · 05/05/2021 14:56

oh man you know I mentioned vore at the beginning of the thread? Well someone has posted a vore fic that has my main (rare) character that I write for in it.

The tags describe it as 'soft vore' and 'wholesome' - what do you reckon - do I dare dive in and see what it's about?

CornedBeef451 · 05/05/2021 14:57

@Icantreachthepretzels read it and report back!

MrsGulDukat · 05/05/2021 15:04

@Icantreachthepretzels

Get in there!

When I'm feeling particularly needy... Yes.

Also, I hate to say it, but it works. At least when used sparingly. I try not to beg. I have my self-respect, innit.

I'd be a hard no. But if you are going to... report back how icky it made you feel, on a scale from one to BRING ON THE SPIDERS OF DEATH.
Icantreachthepretzels · 05/05/2021 15:10

I'll put my fingers over my eyes and peep out. I'll report back.

Icantreachthepretzels · 05/05/2021 15:13

The authors note says it is soft, non fatal vore - in which one person swallows another person whole but in a nurturing, protective way ... honestly, it takes all sorts to make the world go round Shock Shock Grin
