Inspired by another thread by HensTeeth44, here is a thread for lovers of fan fiction either writer or just an avid reader.

I do have some unfinished Harry Potter fan fic to share but I'm at working at the moment.

Dont be afraid to share your favourites.

Oh I remember the days of actually finishing a story before I started posting it.

That's what you're supposed to do of course but ... fanfic is the place good habits go to die.
careful how you go @HensTeeth44 - you've well and truly joined the dark side now.

MrsGulDukat · 03/05/2021 19:54

I've never posted a full fic in one go.

I like to make people wait 😂

Icantreachthepretzels · 03/05/2021 20:29

I've never posted in one go (one shots aside) - but I used to write the whole thing and then update on a regular schedule.

I just add chapters as they are ready.

I still haven't managed to write Cassie and Lucius' interview with Umbridge.

How many ways can you ask if a married couple was banging or not?

OP posts:
HensTeeth44 · 03/05/2021 21:24

I think that's what i had in mind with mine @Icantreachthepretzels
I'm such a perfectionist that I couldn't imagine posting something unfinished. But ask me again in a year if I'm still writing. Grin

bunglebee · 03/05/2021 21:26

I just post chapters as I finish them. I don't have the self control to hold back.

MrsGulDukat · 03/05/2021 21:28

Nor me @bunglebee

I shove them on as soon as the chapter is ready.

I've lost the self control - though I know my writing would be better if I still had it.

My first fanfic was my season one rewrite of Angel - it was 56 chapters and I wrote them all before I even signed up to fanfic.net (I've only recently turned to the even darker side of AO3). It was 14 full episodes in 4 parts - plus the rewrite of the end of the 9th episode - and I posted it over 15 weeks.

I used those 15 weeks to start writing season 2 -and was nearly finished by the end ... a couple of weeks later, I was posting s2 and writing s3.

I think I started posting s3 when I still had a couple of episodes of it left to write - but was in no danger of catching up with myself.

I was writing the second half of s4 as I posted the first half ...and then it had all gone to hell by s5. I had to keep going on hiatus.

Now on s6 - I should have posted part four of episode 5 today - I haven't actually written part three or four and have spent the last two days writing a superfluous HP fic (which is going really well and I'm really enjoying writing)
I guess s6 will take as long as it takes - if the people reading it interacted more I might be inclined to write faster but ... that's why you should leave comments if you're enjoying a story.

But the trouble with posting before it's all written is that you then can't go back a change things when you have a sudden brilliant idea to make it all make sense (well - I guess you could on Ao3 -but your readers might not see the changes)

I've done that in the past - just had the realisation of 'oh... if I use that and I put that there and - oh - that's really good' and so planted things that become really clever reveals - but I can't do that if I've already posted the earlier chapters.

MrsGulDukat · 03/05/2021 22:03

I dont know how you have the patience to write so many chapters.

My longest fic was 30 chapters.

Just bumped into this thread - used to write a bit back in the day. I found that fic on FF.net got a LOT more reviews compared to the same fic on A03 (to the extent that I think there were more reviews for my one attempt at a Welsh language fic on FF.net I really had more time back then than for most of my English ones on A03), don't know if that's a common experience

MrsGulDukat · 03/05/2021 22:41

@Sadik

It's the opposite for me. Maybe it depends on the fandom.

OP posts:
Sadik · 03/05/2021 22:46

Makes sense, I used to write/read Mortal Instruments / Infernal Devices fic so pretty teenage dominated (though there was/is some excellent stuff out there amongst the dross, and the advantage of a smaller pool)

Sadik · 03/05/2021 22:48

Nice thing is that I still get the odd reader /reviewer popping up years later - mainly for more obscure cross-overs, but not entirely.

Icantreachthepretzels · 03/05/2021 22:56

My longest fic was 30 chapters.

My longest fic was 90 chapters and over 500 000 words. It got a decent amount of reviews (for an Angel fic) but it took nearly a year to write - that was s5.

But now I've been writing s6 for not far off a year and I've finished 18 chapters - of 88. At this rate I should finish some time in late 2024. If I ever finish.

MichelleScarn · 03/05/2021 23:18

Posted on the other thread, I am one of those who do love a Post Hogwarts Dramione, constantly jump between preferring aooo and ff.

MrsGulDukat · 04/05/2021 09:51

@Icantreachthepretzels

It took me 4 years to write a 25 chapter fic. Strangely, that fic is also my most successful. People loved apparently.

It's the opposite for me too. I think my writing style is more suited to AO3. I don't write wish fulfilment fic, as it were... I tend to make everything (including sex) realistically awkward.

I've never written a piece longer than say 17k words... Although my WIP is shaping up to be 40.

Sadik · 04/05/2021 10:32

Mine don't include any sex, maybe that's the issue (though one of my most read does include a visit to an STD clinic Grin )

MrsGulDukat · 04/05/2021 12:19

@Sadik

Most of my fics are riddled with sex. 😆

OP posts:
MrsGulDukat · 04/05/2021 12:21

None of you ever read my fics.

You might judge the quality of the sex, I.e it's a bit porny.

OP posts:
Icantreachthepretzels · 04/05/2021 12:56

I only ever wrote one plot relevant sex scene and that was in a dream sequence. It was pretty cringey - I was cringing when I wrote it (though in fairness the scene from the show it's based off is massive cringe)

Other than that I'm very much a 'fade to black' kind of writer. Kiss kiss, take off your shirt, fall onto the bed ... next scene.

I always think it's kind of inappropriate to write too in depth about the sex between characters played by actors - because readers are picturing those actors so it feels like an invasion of their privacy (I mean, what on earth do James Marsters and David Boreanaz think of the champagne enema from earlier in the thread? - hopefully they just don't know about it - but they must be aware stuff like that is out there and it probably makes them pretty uncomfortable if they think about it. I saw an interview with the horrible histories actors where the interviewer mentioned fan fic to them - Mat and Ben in particular [who get the most fics written about them] were just squirming.)
Harry Potter characters are fair game though, because they're from books ... but I still wouldn't write Harry Potter porn. It would be too weird. It's a kids book!

Sadik · 04/05/2021 13:21

I like reading seed scenes, just not writing them. Two of my favourite fics are poly HP (Draco/Harry/Hermione) & TID (Tessa/Will/Jem) -but I think it's something you can either do or not, & if it's not your thing it does show in the cringe level.
(I do prefer my HP sex scenes to take place some years later though)

MrsGulDukat · 04/05/2021 13:48

Most of my fics are relating to videogame characters so I dont have to worry about the actor behindt the character.

And the others are Aliens dressed in thousands of layers of make up so again, not a true representation of the actor. (Helps that.my characters dont do weird shit like some shit champagne)

My Harry Potter fic will have sex in it but its between a made up character and a full grown adult. It also wont be like 50 shades either.

OP posts:
bunglebee · 04/05/2021 14:11

I do write sex, but not kink and it's generally an illustration of the relationship between the characters and/or what is going on for a given character. Never anything particularly weird and I've never written a PWP. (I've certainly enjoyed reading them, though, so... Blush)

Oddly enough given how much m/m I've enjoyed in my life, I've written femslash and het but never a m/m sex scene.

MrsGulDukat · 04/05/2021 14:31

I have written a few PWP mainly out of boredom.
