Inspired by another thread by HensTeeth44, here is a thread for lovers of fan fiction either writer or just an avid reader.

I do have some unfinished Harry Potter fan fic to share but I'm at working at the moment.

Dont be afraid to share your favourites.

That is something I wont be searching for.

I'm terrified of what I might find.

Mumsnet is responsible for me googling Dino porn and My Little Pony porn.

I've learnt not to google everything I see on mumsnet.

And now I'm thinking way too much about that picture. Some dude got naked on a beach and arranged a dead octopus on himself. Presumably for porn purposes. WHAT.

I'm watching DS9 @MrsGulDukat

MrsGulDukat · 01/05/2021 22:19

@bunglebee

Make sure you watch Civil Defence from series 3 or 4.

Gul Dukat is so deliciously smug in that one I get the raging fanny gallops.

I've posted the beginnings of a Harry Potter fic on Ao3 - already on page 9 and sinking 😂

What are subscriptions though? what is the purpose of them? And why don't they show up where anyone can see they exist? I always get more subscriptions than bookmarks but number of bookmarks and kudos are the way people sort through fics they want to read - so even if you get a lot of subscriptions, no one knows people are following it! And don't even get me started on people who keep their bookmarks private...

MrsGulDukat · 02/05/2021 13:03

I dont think I've ever had a subscription on Ao3 and I've been posting there for years.

bunglebee · 02/05/2021 13:05

I do have some personal subscriptions. I think bookmarks and comments are where it's at though.

MrsGulDukat · 02/05/2021 13:09

I get plenty of Kudos, comments and bookmarks.

I tell a lie, I have 370 subscriptions.

These are my stats from 28 fics.

I always get subscriptions! I have personal ones and ones for every story.
I feel like screaming Just Bookmark It! ... but you can't see who is subscribed to you so ... I would be screaming into the void.

It's like a way to follow the story but without in any way helping the story gain visibility to others.
Either AO3 should scrap it, or they should allow people to sort by number of subscriptions and make the numbers public if not the names.

I mean, if you like a story enough to subscribe to it you should surely do what you can to boost the signal on it. That just seems like good fanfic etiquette to me.

Icantreachthepretzels · 02/05/2021 13:20

Angel is just deader than dead (which I suppose is the point of him - but it's hard work in a fandom). And Doyle/ Cordelia is pretty niche. There's probably only about 50 shippers of them on the planet and I suspect they have already all read my stuff.

but still - if they could bookmark rather than subscribe, that would be nice.

MrsGulDukat · 02/05/2021 13:24

Oh, I've got another annoyance.

I was following a romance fic and really enjoyed so I encouraged the writer to write the next part.

Next part comes and starts off well, then suddenly a happy couple have invited another man in then another because it was at the suggestion of the readers.

Really ruined the flow of the romance so I stopped reading.

I shouldnt be annoyed but I was really enjoying that fic.

Yeah - I'm all for fanfic pride but ... the truth is a lot of fanfic readers want weird stuff (see tentacle porn) and when people assume it's a weird little hobby for the weird sex obsessed - they're not far wrong.

But I bet that writer lost as many readers as they pleased with that one. If people are reading a romance between one of their ships, they don't want it to turn into a threesome or some poly thing unless that has been clearly tagged and they went in with their eyes open.

MrsGulDukat · 02/05/2021 14:06

I've read and written ones with multiple partners, but I knew what was gonna happen from the start. So I enjoyed it.

People were asking for weirder things with that fic and I checked out.

I'm not adverse to kink but sometimes it ruins a good fic.

Work subscriptions are designed to help people keep track of WIP - an email is sent to subscribers when the work updates. Bookmarks don't generate emails.

(Author subscriptions are the same principle but for any time the writer posts something new.)

CornedBeef451 · 02/05/2021 15:20

I don't really understand the bookmarks, I just it for long fics if I think I might accidentally close the tab and forget what it's called.

I do like subscribe as I get emails about any updates to works and anything new from the author.

I can't really cope with WIP, I'm subscribed to one at the moment and the writer just has a couple of chapters left but is only posting about once a month. I imagine writing a good ending is hard so I'm being very supportive and trying to see it as a nice surprise if she posts rather demanding "write it magic word lady!".

MrsGulDukat · 02/05/2021 15:49

I've just updated a fic and I'm waiting impatiently for a comment.

Yeah they're like follows on fanfic.net - the difference being follows are publicly recorded on ff.net so other people can see them. Whereas on AO3 they're a way to keep track of a work you want to read but without doing anything that will help the fic get more hits.

if follows and favourites can be recorded on ff.net - I don't see why bookmarks and subscriptions can't be on AO3. Bookmarks only tell half the story.

And why someone would sign up to get email notifications for something and not take the time to hit the Kudos button is truly baffling.

MrsGulDukat · 02/05/2021 21:10

On to the next fic to update. Need to search my brain for ideas for a burgeoning affair between a Mercenary and a politician.

Icantreachthepretzels · 02/05/2021 23:44

I've had a really good writing day today - over five thousand words ... but writing my new Harry Potter fic instead of the Angel fic i'm supposed to be writing- so I feel guilty about neglecting the one I was supposed to write in order to do something new.

When you're procrastinating over writing one fanfiction by writing another - that's when you know you have a fan fic problem.

MrsGulDukat · 02/05/2021 23:47

@Icantreachthepretzels

I have 4 WIP on the go.

Why did I do this shit to myself?

OP posts:
MrsGulDukat · 03/05/2021 17:11

So, instead of writing, me and DD have been playing board games.

Best one is Destination: Hogwarts. Best game ever.

So folks, I have started writing my own Snape fanfic. From someone who didn't even know this world existed a few weeks ago, I can't thank you guys enough Smile❤️

MrsGulDukat · 03/05/2021 18:12

Well done @HensTeeth44

If you need any tips then I'm sure the other writers on this thread could help.

OP posts:
HensTeeth44 · 03/05/2021 18:17

I'm sure I most definitely will, so thank you. I have no idea what to do with it when it's finished, so might need some tips on where to post it and not get crucified for it being terrible! 😂

bunglebee · 03/05/2021 18:26

Well done @HensTeeth44!

If you want a beta reader to give it a read through before you post I'd be happy to.

HensTeeth44 · 03/05/2021 18:29

Amazing, thanks @bunglebee Star it might take me a while to finish but may have to take you up on that offer x
