Inspired by another thread by HensTeeth44, here is a thread for lovers of fan fiction either writer or just an avid reader.

I do have some unfinished Harry Potter fan fic to share but I'm at working at the moment.

Dont be afraid to share your favourites.

Woohoo!

I'm only really getting one day a week to work on my Queens Gambit piece right now, life was just getting too stressful otherwise, but I'll get there.

I may tag my HP idea to the bottom of my list but given what PP have said about the fandom, I may not Grin

MrsGulDukat · 25/04/2021 07:07

I wouldnt bother with the HP fandom @bunglebee

In a couple of hours, my fic has been shoved down to page 8 and unviewed.

OP posts:
bunglebee · 25/04/2021 07:29

Yeah that was my feeling 😁 it's hard enough to get engagement in a fandom without that and God knows I have enough else to write!

@bunglebee

It makes me not wanna continue with that fic. If no one is viewing it or even appearing to like then what's the point of spending time on it.

OP posts:
bunglebee · 25/04/2021 08:19

My writing time is snatched around work, DC and studying and I had to throttle back on it a bit because I was in danger of feeling like my life was turning into one long endless grind. So yes, if I'm going to plug away for weeks writing thousands of words, it better be either my some-day original novel or a fic that's going to gain a little positive feedback! Thanks for confirming my decision Wink

MrsGulDukat · 25/04/2021 08:31

@bunglebee

I have to do a lot of writing in my job, of which is a lot of medical terminology and sometimes you really have to concentrate on it.

What time I do have free, I might not always want to write so if do feel the creative urge, then I want it to be worthwhile.

I'm taking your advice and putting detailed comments on fics I've liked rather than just a kudos.

I find it funny I'm a fan of some fanfic writers more than the actual show sometimes.

I have a favourite Destiel writer who goes to comicons, meets the actors, follows them on all media, and then I read her fics, subscribed on AO3 and then followed her on Twitter and Tumblr. I'm a fan of a fan!

MrsGulDukat · 25/04/2021 18:18

@CornedBeef451

Some fanfic writers are truly gifted at what they do.

I'd take a well written fanfic about anything over the 50 shades tripe.

Definitely do. It is such a glorious gift to have someone engage in detail with your work. it means so much and is incredibly motivational. I would probably finish a series for just one loyal reader who left comments.

MrsGulDukat · 25/04/2021 18:39

I'm just finishing off a DS9 fic in which I had one loyal reader. I get it going for 19 chapters because they were enjoying it so much.

I like building up base of loyal readers because they know what I'm about and they keep coming back.

The Strike fandom has been swamped since the latest book and TV adaptation came out last September.

It's been fun to 'meet' some new fans but with RL being a bit overwhelming I've felt unable to keep up with the reading, let along writing, and I know other writers who have felt the same.

I keep in touch with a handful away from.the boards and try and read their stuff, but am focusing on my own writing atm.

itssquidstella · 25/04/2021 18:58

I only ever read slash or gen in any of the fandoms I enjoyed. No interest whatsoever in het (alternative I did read the Draco Trilogy back when Cassie Claire was the BNF of HP fandom).

Ff.net was always viewed scathingly by 'proper' writers back in my day - has the quality improved since?

The nice thing about livejournal was the community aspect, tbh - I'm still in touch with some of the people I met through LOTR in particular, even though I haven't been involved in fandom for over ten years. Sites like ff.net didn't (don't?) really offer that.

MrsGulDukat · 25/04/2021 19:02

One of my fics was reported about 5 years ago for having too much sex in it.

I still publish on there but I dont read FF.net fics. I prefer AO3 for my fic needs.

I post a lot on FanFiction.net and Archive of Our Own. I love writing FanFiction!

MrsGulDukat · 25/04/2021 19:09

What fandoms are you into @Ginger1982

OP posts:
Ginger1982 · 25/04/2021 19:10

I've written for loads. My most active ones at the moment are The Bill, All Creatures Great and Small and Law & Order.

itssquidstella · 25/04/2021 19:18

I’ve never come across AO3. How easily navigable is it?

MrsGulDukat · 25/04/2021 19:20

@itssquidstella

Very easy.

Find a fandom you want and you can filter out things you arent interested in reading.

What sort of fandoms are you looking for?

OP posts:
itssquidstella · 25/04/2021 19:23

I'm not sure, tbh. Probably HP, just because I know the canon really well; I stopped watching SPN around season 10 and LOTR doesn't hold the appeal it did when I was a teenager.

archiveofourown.org/tags/Harry%20Potter%20-%20Jd%20Kd%20Rowling/works

Theres a link to it. It's pretty active so you'll probably find something you like.

Basically, no. But every now and then you stumble on a true gem that isn't on AO3. There are a couple of amazing gen writers in the Firefly 'verse who only post/posted on FF.net and that's enough to keep me coming back occasionally.

I still keep an LJ in which I write character essays and fic backstory even though I hate what it's become. Anyone got a good alternative?

itssquidstella · 25/04/2021 20:00

Thanks @MrsGulDukat!

@bunglebee there was an alternative to LJ called journalfen at one point, but don't know if it still exists.

MrsGulDukat · 25/04/2021 20:44

I used to go on live journal for fic prompts. It's so clunky to navigate.

CornedBeef451 · 25/04/2021 21:14

@MrsGulDukat my favourite is Northernsparrow and she writes science stuff for a living but her fanfics are amazing, I think she's writing original stuff to try and get published too.

I really hope she does but I don't know her real name so I'm just hoping she goes public if it happens!

MrsGulDukat · 25/04/2021 21:25

@CornedBeef451

I'm trying my own works atm. I've created this wonderful verse but nothing is coming together.

Good luck to that writer. Its bloody hard work when everything has to come from your own head.
