'One project a day' thread

BlueLobelia · 18/04/2021 12:51

... many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :)

I cut up a large branch, it's been sat there needing to be sorted out for about 6 weeks. I filled our green bin up.

Tomorrow I'll tackle a couple of junk/clutter piles.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 10/05/2021 07:24

I'm digging a couple of plants out of the rockery (they are taking over) and passing on to someone on a local Facebook gardening site.

Yesterday I finally got around to planting our potatoes.

Fnib · 10/05/2021 07:40

Got my larder put back together last night, I'm relieved to say. Everything still in date apart from a packet of cornflakes bbe August 2020 which was lurking top and back. Tempted to feed them to DH anyway. I don't like them.
We've accidentally acquired several jars of pasta sauce (DH shops and frequently goes 'off list') so they are going to the food bank today as it's top of their current list (along with toothpaste)
I have some more drawers to sort out and 2 wardrobe floors that need attention so they will be my focus this week I think.
It's like the old saying about painting the forth bridge really. I don't think I'll ever be finished.
There is a garden to work on too.

crosshatching · 10/05/2021 09:25

Love this thread. Today I'm going to finally swap the winter duvets for summer ones (if temperatures plummet again you'll know who to blame), and get a bag of books etc to a charity shop.

SydneyCarton · 10/05/2021 15:09

I fell off the wagon a bit last week with no real projects apart from basic (very basic!) housework, but this week I think I am going to make the bathroom my focus, as it's been a shamefully long time since it had more than a quick wipe down and a bit of bleach. So I'm tackling a separate bit of it each day, ideally for around five minutes, and hopefully by the end of the week it'll be looking a lot better.

The plan is Monday - sink, Tuesday - toilet, Wednesday - windowsills, Thursday - bath and shower screen and Friday - floor. Thursday and Friday may take a bit longer than five minutes because it's slightly bigger areas, but hopefully no more than ten mins each time.

Sink is ticked off and looking good. I also have some laundry to put away which I folded in front of the TV at lunchtime (WFH).

LlamaGiles · 10/05/2021 17:02

Did a bit better today:
-Returned some clothes I'd bought online
-Posted a couple of eBay items
-Chose some garden furniture, just have to run it by DP before ordering

Hoping for a spell of decent weather this week so I can get on top of hedges/lawns/weeds but forecast isn't looking great!

mamakoukla · 10/05/2021 18:41

My tiny project today is painting the outside and bottom of a tiny keepsake box. I’ve gone for shades of dark to mid-blue to recall the sea. The lid has a recessed glass panel. I’ve painted the wooden back in it gold. When it dries, I am going to rake through my childhood stash of sea shells to find a few that can be glued onto the wood and fit below the glass. Hoping to find some grains of sand too. Disclaimer - it will not be photo worthy. I don’t have an artistic bone in my body! I anted to explore the childhood joy of creating for the sake of it

Sparklynewname · 10/05/2021 19:18

Nothing achieved on Saturday as I felt a bit unwell.
Nothing yesterday as I just felt meh in the morning and was socialising in the afternoon- although I did paint my toenails in the morning.
Dining room table has been unearthed a little today.

2020nymph · 10/05/2021 19:52

On top of the microwave is now clear.
DS1's project work is now contained in a box file and the dining table has been unearthed.
DS2 came home from nursery with four holes in his top which I had now repaired. He is almost out of that size and I'm loathed to buy a replacement.

Chunkymonkey123 · 10/05/2021 19:57

Not done a lot today but I did take both boys to Clark’s to buy new shoes, that was stressful! I also washed a couple of coats.

BeautifulandWilfulandDead · 10/05/2021 20:18

Mixed success last week, but I've been on the case since Saturday. The last two coats have been done on the wardrobe of doom, just need to put the final coat on the drawers and add the handles and it's finished! That's tomorrow's job.

Squirrelblanket · 10/05/2021 20:26

This thread is very inspiring!

Tomorrow I am going to photograph and post the two things I want to sell on eBay. I AM! Smile

mum2jakie · 10/05/2021 20:34

I didn't necessarily complete 'a project a day' last week but was quite productive nonetheless.

I got the car maintenance issues sorted - new bulb, wipers, full tank, air conditioning refreshed and exterior cleaned. Just need to clean inside some point this week.

Outside I got rid of two large items of rubbish via the rag and bone man. Indoors, just got the other side of the washing mountain that had built up over the course of a wet week.

@SydneyCarton I like your idea of breaking down the bathroom tasks into simple daily tasks so think I'll follow that. Toilets this evening and then separate parts throughout the week.

@BlueLobelia - lovely story about your son. It's those moments that keep you going!

ShinyHatStand · 10/05/2021 20:47

Busy work day.

But I did finish off sorting out the shoes and moving the wellies and hiking boots that don't get used often to a more out of the way place. Freed up space in the very small downstairs toilet.

And I tidied the conservatory which was covered in laundry that had been taken off the line but not put away.

10 mins total I reckon.

Sparklynewname · 10/05/2021 22:06

I forgot to say @BlueLobelia, what a lovely story about your DS.
I have spent the evening catching up with work stuff and Scouting stuff which all suddenly arose. Oh well, one less thing to achieve!

Fnib · 11/05/2021 07:40

I made it to supermarket to drop off my excess dolmio yesterday. Also got one drawer cleared, and a charity just helpfully dropped off one of those bags to put clothes in for pick up tomorrow, so I don't have to trek to a charity shop that's probably overwhelmed, for my couple of bits that can go.
House is looking pretty good as housework is minimal now with only 2 plus not many possessions.
I think my project today will be weeding for ten mins after work.

BlueLobelia · 11/05/2021 09:28

@Divineswirls

That's so sweet *@BlueLobelia* and you know what, they say lovely things like that because they're surrounded by loveliness
Thanks

Thanks everyone. :) DS is a sweetie.

I am taking a few days annual leave because I am just really tired and need the break.

So today I plan to wash all the bed clothes. I am buying more pots and compost.

I also want to plot out some sort of summer break. I am not sure about travelling abroad this year (both DH and I have been double-jabbed but I am nervous about the DCs... I might reconsider though depending on how things go) and so i want to research 4-5 great UK-based options and start planning them. Right now I am thinking New Forest. I'd love to visit the Channel Islands though.

Hope you all have a very good day. :)

I've got one wash in the machine, DS bedding mainly, and have cleaned the mantelpiece which had loads of wax on it which I've wanted to do for ages.

I've got a meeting later on then urgh might Hoover / mop kitchen floor / or wash down a wall with sugar soap. But probably not Hmm

My DS 15 who was chatting to his friends, had a boy come up to him in the school playground yesterday who said 'you've got till I count to 5 to run' my DS just ignored him and carried on talking. This boy ran towards him leapt in the air and kicked him in the arm. My DS being the taller one just stared down at the boy now on the floor and just carried on talking. Boy runs off embarrassed. There was no apparent reason for this strange event.

BlueLobelia · 11/05/2021 10:03

That;s really bizzarre @Divineswirls !!

I like your DS's style though!

Rubbish day yesterday, mostly in bed.

Today, I have already filled in important forms, dropped of parcels at three different return depots, am about to drop clothes off at the chazzer and get some bits for dinner.

Chunkymonkey123 · 11/05/2021 12:44

Today I advertised some pallets that were culturing the front garden for free and they’ve already gone! I’ve also planted some more seeds.
I need to do sort my charity bags as my FIL volunteers at a charity shop and says he’ll take them this weekend. No charity shops round here want them atm.

Devlesko · 11/05/2021 13:47

Today I'm setting up a new email account and doing techie stuff, removing from laptop and setting up a desktop schedule to get organised.
Probably won't manage anything else other than usual domestic everyday stuff.

SydneyCarton · 11/05/2021 14:58

@mum2jakie I think the total time I'll actually spend cleaning will only be about 45 mins tops, but there's no way I'd have the mojo to do all of it in one go! Sink done yesterday and toilet is done today, both together took about 12 minutes - we're in a hard water area so limescale is never ending Hmm. I'm also planning on doing 30 minutes in the children's bedroom as per TOMM and possibly some laundry folding and putting away if I feel really energetic Grin

I wish we had a rag and bone man to offload our stuff on!

TenCornMaidens · 11/05/2021 15:58

Managed to get a load of things to the chazzer today, also got rid of something massive via FB, AND braved Aldi.
