'One project a day' thread

... many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :)

I washed my glass/mirror wardrobe doors - I’ve been looking at how dirty they are for months and it literally took just 5 minutes!

Any tips for what to clean kitchen cupboard doors with? I have both gloss and matt ones but neither clean up that well.

Elbow Grease. I don't know how it works but it gets rid of all the sticky dries grease that accumulates.

I went to get lateral flow tests. Sounds silly but I'd been putting it off for a few days.

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 01/05/2021 17:59

This thread is absolutely genius! Exactly what I needed to get me out of the lockdown habit of being extremely lazy and motivate me.

Today I went and bought some antihistamines, been needing to get some all week and haven't had the energy, that was my project today.

Cowbells · 01/05/2021 18:08

@Lamentations - would Elbow Grease work on sticky kitchen wall tiles? I have tried everything and they never quite get rid of that stickiness.

Since DH got home from walking the dogs, we have: taken down cupboard from futility room wall (and cleaned off old paint). Stripped back loose paint, filled all holes, taken down old loo door and been to B&Q to get a new door, eggshell paint and I remembered the soil watering crystals and solid plant food for when I (eventually) get my pots planted!
I can’t believe the time! I have mountains of washing to fold up but hopefully we’ll watch an episode of “This is us” tonight and I can do it during that.

2020nymph · 01/05/2021 19:50

I've sorted out some more of the children's things they've out grown and DH took them to the charity shop along with the two big boxes I sorted a few weeks ago. They were pleased with the donations.

I took all the out of date medicine to the pharmacy to dispose of.

Laundry mountain almost conquered. Just our bedding tomorrow. I've been busy occupying the boys inside and catching up on housework while DH fixed the shed (still a bit of work to do) without the hindrance of little helpers. This does mean I didn't get to do the gardening I had planned to do.

BeautifulandWilfulandDead · 01/05/2021 20:10

Good day today! I finished priming DDs massive wardrobe, chosen paint colours for serveral rooms and I've ordered things for the utility refit. Tomorrow, I need to order the new bathroom, order loads of paint and maybe if time allows continue painting the never-ending wardrobe. Happy projecting!

mamakoukla · 01/05/2021 21:10

Today’s things were more household related. It was sunnier than the forecast predicted so I washed the towels etc to hang out to dry. I made chocolate cake with DC and we had that with a cup of tea. Laundry coming in now. Love the fresh air smell! Tomorrow I will tackle the desk. Just simply do not enjoy sorting and organizing spots for random things.

Catname · 01/05/2021 21:22

Today I've used my Aldi tiller to finish one of the new borders in the garden. It's still quite hard work but nowhere near as long a job or as backbreaking a task as digging it myself - and the quality of the soil is so much more manageable. I'm really pleased with progress. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to plant it up.

PowerslidePanda · 01/05/2021 21:25

The landing is painted and looking so much fresher! Tomorrow's project will be touching it up and then probably attacking the en-suite with the grout pen.

frugalkitty · 01/05/2021 22:42

Brilliant thread OP and thanks to reading through it this evening, I remembered it's the first of the month and I hadn't made the mortgage overpayment so thanks for the nudge!
Yesterday's job was taking down our bedroom light shade and soaking it before putting back up last night. The water afterwards was grim Blush
I'm gearing up to go back to work in the autumn after some years at home so I'm trying to declutter and simplify things so it's easier to keep on top of things. I like the idea of one job a day that's not the usual hoover/dust type of job to help keep the otherwise forgotten or neglected bits up together. Fab idea.

ShinyHatStand · 01/05/2021 23:00

Another couple of fence panels painted.
Now just got to do the ones that are mostly out of sight and covered with overgrown bushes.
And the shed, which I'm strangely looking forward to. It's a different colour!!!! How exciting will that be 😂

LlamaGiles · 02/05/2021 00:36

Sorted a few birthday presents for various people today, also party invitations bought. Had hoped to get more done with a trip to our local shopping centre for some household bits and pieces but it was packed (even at 5pm!) and I couldn't face queuing with toddler in tow.

mum2jakie · 02/05/2021 08:43

Cleared and cleaned the table in the living room which is an absolute clutter magnet! Some of the items returned to their rightful place and some disposed of. Makes the whole room feel fresher.

BlueLobelia · 02/05/2021 08:51

Morning all!

Today I am just doing my 'maintenance' house cleaning.

projects:

  • chocolate chip cookies with the DCs
-buying a fourth waterproof blanket for our elderly incontinent dog so we can be sure that we have one down for every place she likes to sleep in! (Woke up to a patch on the duvet.... DH is currently washing the duvet and divet cover)

Oh I love this, a project a day.
Mine today is to clean the bathroom and en-suite thoroughly.

Cowbells · 02/05/2021 09:23

This is such a brilliant thread. You are all so industrious! I am starting small (long way to go Grin). Today's was not house related but booking some very complicated travel for work that took an hour on line. But I've done it (I put it off for weeks!) so now can enjoy the sunshine and go for a long walk with DH.

I'm going to add sending off two invoices after the walk. Putting them off too because they each have a tricky additional hurdle to them that has stopped me from processing them, but I will do them today.

I want my projects to turn into geranium potting and bathroom grouting instead of all the boring admin I procrastinate on!

grumpypug · 02/05/2021 09:32

After reading through the beginnings of this thread last night, I got up early and painted a small garden wall that I've been "not getting 'round to". Job well done.

Thanks for the thread. Will make myself a cuppa and read through the rest of it now Smile

Cowbells · 02/05/2021 09:33

I've just been reading up on marginal gains thanks to PP's reference to it. It's so fascinating. Going to stick with it.

SnugglySnerd · 02/05/2021 09:35

What a brilliant idea, that seems so much more manageable than writing a big long list to tackle. I will try and do this.

LeonoraFlorence · 02/05/2021 11:56

Today I’m searching for shoe racks for DDs wardrobes. Have never found anything slim enough that holds enough pairs.

Sparklynewname · 02/05/2021 12:26

I’m just watching the Waitrose van trying to turn without hitting DH’s car 😬
I have emptied and cleaned the shoe box. Only putting back shoes we are keeping.
DH has filled the walls in the futility room and painted the new door one side. Hoping to get the top sliders on later so that the old door can go in my car ready to go to the tip.
I changed the door handle in the bathroom last night only to find that the latch mechanism doesn’t fit so I have had to take off the whole thing until we can repair all the holes and then redrill it 😬
He’s now taken the dogs out for a few hours so I shall clean up the mess in the futility room and then fold the hundreds of loads of washing that need folding.
I will then crack on with my FlyLadyPlus list and maybe remember to have lunch today.
The lorry hit a wall and neighbours van not our car (cause DH went and moved it) just in case you’re interested.
I despair of people coming up here with huge vehicles and trying to turn- it’s too small!

SydneyCarton · 02/05/2021 12:32

Today’s project was to make a non urgent medical appointment which I had been meaning to do for ages, so that’s ticked off. On a practical note I have descaled the kettle, washed a duvet and posted a birthday card.

Fnib · 02/05/2021 12:39

Marginal gains sounds exactly right @Cowells. I have been trying to do a thing 'that stays done' every day for a couple of years now. It's made an enormous difference to my home (and life)
Mostly, it was decluttering at the beginning. We're mostly decluttered now and it makes it so very much easier to keep things in their place. I find I have much more time now, too, despite working and busy extended family/caring duties.
I changed batteries in smoke alarm today, and cleaned underneath the lint collector in my tumble drier.
