tessiegirl · 14/04/2021 20:11

My nan is shortly turning 80 and I wanted to try and come up with 80 presents for her Confused
Is it possible?!
Presents can be small and cheap to some which can be more expensive...
Can anyone please help with ideas?

re Nans day out...there are another 364 days in the year, some of them bleak and miserable.
I think she may appreciate nice trips or treats on those days too.

re 80 things......One minute we are all crying because a dolphin has plastic wrapped round it, the next we are celebrating 80 bits of random stuff.

MayI older ladies often prefer stockings because their legs get cold but tights make everything sweaty around a certain area !!
Personally I probably wouldn't buy some for a gift unless requested but I know some ladies would appreciate them. Especially in these times when they can't get to shops.

Random bits?

I think a little bit of sick just came up in my mouth.

Do you actually know any "older ladies"? I've never met any who wear stockings. My mum wears black opaque tights all the time. From what I've seen she has about twenty pairs.

Buying her those would be about equal to buying her a loo roll.

VanGoghsDog · 16/04/2021 16:52

This is hilarious.

I think I'll make space in my cupboard now for "special vinegar", "nice tissues", "stockings" (just out of interest, at what age do I start to wear them?), Etc.

My mum doesn't have a CD nor a DVD player and it's a bit late now to start trying to explain to her how to use one. Rather than buying DVD of her favourite old shows why not just give her a BritBox subscription? More than eighty shows on there!

Ilovemaisie · 16/04/2021 17:10

VanGogh I know lots of older ladies. I also used to work in a shop that sold tights and stockings. The older ladies wanted stockings.
As I said though this wouldn't be something I personally would buy for a birthday gift unless requested.

@mammmamia

Honestly a lot of these lists just sound like your Tesco shop, wrapped up 🤦🏻‍♀️
Exactly what I was thinking!

"Grandma, you've reached a hugely significant big birthday, and you're really special to, and loved by, us! So here's a load of really ordinary stuff that you've probably got all you need of in your cupboards already."

maddy68 · 16/04/2021 17:30

I think that's a dreadful idea. She will end up with 80 bits of unwanted crap. Get her a nice present with 80 hand selected chocolates , or balloons , or something like that

Puntosareus · 16/04/2021 17:38

Had an awful day at work and this post has really made me laugh! Whatever you decide OP I hope your Nan has a lovely birthday

Oblomov21 · 16/04/2021 17:38

My friends mum is 80 soon, taking notes.

Onelifeonly · 16/04/2021 17:39

I did 50 gold things for my parents wedding anniversary. Easier as everything had to be gold coloured or have gold in its title. Still took ages. A lot were food items like gold blend coffee etc. My mum, then mid 70s loved it. Also did 25 silver things for a silver wedding anniversary.

But I'm not sure this is a good idea. There's no theme and you don't have the benefit of pleasing two people (the couple) which helps in thinking of ideas.

BettyCarver · 16/04/2021 18:59

This thread has made my day; it’s hilarious Grin

Does she like to eat salad? A bottle of a special vinegar is a nice present

Ooh I know, you could get the salad to go with it. 10 tomatoes, 5 radishes, 3 peppers, an onion - actually spring onions then that could count as 7 items. Ooh what about beetroot, old people love a bit of beetroot...

MayIDestroyYou · 16/04/2021 19:27

Hector! Easter Grin Easter Grin Easter Grin

Ilovemaisie · 16/04/2021 19:30

Hector well surely that comes under the Mumsnet favourite of "a nice meal" which is always suggested Easter Grin

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 16/04/2021 19:43

I'd love to see your list.

Unless it has insoles, 5 radishes, two puppies, random bits and a pencil from Centre Parks it doesn't count.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 16/04/2021 19:44

Oh and don't forget to sing Happy Birthday eighty times.

Rockbird · 16/04/2021 19:44

DH's granny who died when she was in her 90s wanted nothing but Maltesers for every occasion. I could get behind 80 boxes of Maltesers...

GreyhoundG1rl · 16/04/2021 19:48

[quote SkepticalCat]You can get personalised "nice tissues".

For your happy tears!!! Who'd put that on the table at their wedding? Hmm

tessiegirl · 16/04/2021 19:52

The shopping has commenced! Grin

What have you got so far?

Chicchicchicchiclana · 16/04/2021 19:55

Ime most 80 year olds are keen to de-clutter so that they leave fewer things for their relatives to sort through when they die. I honestly believe 99% of older people would be stressed by this gift. I'm sorry if that's hurtful to op but ... come on!

mammmamia · 16/04/2021 20:10

🤣 at pencil from centre parcs

Ninkanink · 16/04/2021 20:16

Does she like salad 🤣🤣

I’m a sucker for a fancy olive oil/walnut oil/vinegar/etc, so I’m not actually dissing the suggestion...

But god that made me chuckle.
