Brands that jumped the shark

Is there a brand that you love, but they brought out a 'New exciting flavour!!' or seasonal variety and it just didn't work at all?

I'll go first - I love an After Eight, but the Gin & Tonic flavour is vile! Unfortunately we do like a gin & tonic, so have been gifted not one but two packs.

Another one - Walkers' cheese mix ups. Big fan of all the snacks individually, but shoving them all in one bag just doesn't work - they're somehow more bland and a bit soggy.

And no, I don't live on junk food, but brocolli and rice seems fairly consistent!

Tell me your brands that went off the rails...

Cadbury’s for trying to hide the disgustingness of their palm oil filled ‘chocolate’ by adding sweets and biscuits. Just give us proper, original recipe chocolate. It makes me sad that DS will never know what a real Dairy Milk bar tasted like.

TTCat39 · 14/04/2021 13:00

Yes @LadyCatStark ! I treated myself to a creme egg this Easter and the chocolate is massively disappointing

I keep seeing adverts for crap on Facebook (who doesn't?). One of which is for lemon meringue flavour deodorant. Why would one want armpits that smell of lemon meringue pie?

TTCat39 · 14/04/2021 13:09

@FishyFriday No, that would not be one for me either I'm afraid. I don't want sweet and sickly armpits!

ANY beverage that put sweeteners in the drink. Fucking vile.

ThePontiacBandit · 14/04/2021 13:13

I used to love Ribena. Genuinely loved it. I drank it warm for years! Then they changed the recipe, reduced the sugar and added sweeteners. I did not react well to the sweetness (think IBS reaction) Hmm so I had to stop drinking it altogether. They lost a good customer in me!

olderthanyouthink · 14/04/2021 13:18

I just started getting Sainsbury's black currant high juice which is so much nicer than current ribena! But they do one with sweeteners and that's the one my local store has so it's a trek to go get the good stuff.

TTCat39 · 14/04/2021 13:18

@osbertthesyrianhamster @ThePontiacBandit My Mum is the same - she can sniff out aspartame a mile away and can't touch the stuff.

@FishyFriday I just thought of a similar one - Waitrose we're doing Mulled Wine scented bleach at Christmas Hmm

Almost every sanitary brand that has started putting scent in their products, just why?! Ditto fragranced toilet roll.

Between products becoming unnecessarily fragranced and others all feeling the need to produce a version in 'salted caramel' flavour, it's a minefield in the supermarket these days!

Supersimkin2 · 14/04/2021 14:37

Chicken.

You have to add the flavour with a chicken stock cube, but I remember the days when it had its own taste.

@mistermagpie Scented tampons are a complete mystery to me. WHO is benefitting from the scent?!

Yep! I can taste them all immediately and they give me the runs. HATE sweeteners and now pretty much only Coke has just sugar in it.

TTCat39 · 14/04/2021 14:44

@Supersimkin2 I haven't bought a chicken breast for a long time because they're so bland. We usually either buy a whole chicken or the skin-on-bone-in thighs. But yeah...I use a stock cube on the skin to flavour it too.

I'm shocked and disgusted that Ribena has started putting fake sugar in. Do they think we can't taste that artificial sweetener flavour? It's vile.

mistermagpie · 14/04/2021 14:48

Milk chocolate is generally so crap these days. The kids got loads of Cadbury eggs from people this year and they are all just sitting there, nobody wants to eat them.

DontWannaBeObamasElf · 14/04/2021 14:50

@FishyFriday That must be Wild deodorant. I use them and it's brilliant but even I raised an eyebrow at lemon meringue and won't be in a rush to place an order!

Does anyone remember vanilla Monster Munch that turned blue? Vile!

TSSDNCOP · 14/04/2021 14:54

I got those gin flavoured After Eights for Christmas too. My face wasSad

I inadvertently bought a raspberry flavour Pepsi Max last week with my meal deal. My face was Sad

Any McDonlads "Special Edition". I drive past a drive in with a giant poster of whatever glistening concoction of over ordering leftovers they've cobbled together and my face is Envy

YoniAndGuy · 14/04/2021 15:44

Just all the fake shit.

Sweeteners in drinks - byee

Palm oil grease choc - byee

It's pretty depressing.

Onetraumaatatimeplease · 14/04/2021 17:21

I tried those after eight french fancies. Because I like french fancies and I also like after eights. I'm here to tell you all not to bother. Barely flavoured chocolate sludge. Because I'm a fool, I went back and tried the Terry's chocolate orange version. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that they were barely flavoured sludge. £5 I will never get back.

IndecentCakes · 14/04/2021 20:39

The mulled wine bleach just smells like bleach bleach as well.

I remember some sort of cheeseless pizza brought out years ago by one of the big delivery companies. It was vile.

DuesToTheDirt · 14/04/2021 20:51

Bachelors Cup a Soups. I used to love them, but they've changed the recipes and now they're just bland. I've switched to Heinz, though they're not totally satisfactory either. Ainsley Harriott has a good sweet and sour one.

HunterAngel · 15/04/2021 08:44

I tried pink chocolate. Absolutely vile! Took one bite and threw the rest away. Can’t stand the sugar free Coca Cola either, despite what DH says it doesn’t taste the same as the sugared version

AuntieStella · 15/04/2021 08:49

Scented sanitary towels, with misleading euphemisms to describe the freshness system.

All sorts of random stuff with marmite
