Brands that jumped the shark

Is there a brand that you love, but they brought out a 'New exciting flavour!!' or seasonal variety and it just didn't work at all?

I'll go first - I love an After Eight, but the Gin & Tonic flavour is vile! Unfortunately we do like a gin & tonic, so have been gifted not one but two packs.

Another one - Walkers' cheese mix ups. Big fan of all the snacks individually, but shoving them all in one bag just doesn't work - they're somehow more bland and a bit soggy.

And no, I don't live on junk food, but brocolli and rice seems fairly consistent!

Tell me your brands that went off the rails...
@mistermagpie Scented tampons are a complete mystery to me. WHO is benefitting from the scent?!
My own personal conspiracy theory is that scented sanpro was invented by the people behind Canesten!

@ThePontiacBandit

I used to love Ribena. Genuinely loved it. I drank it warm for years! Then they changed the recipe, reduced the sugar and added sweeteners. I did not react well to the sweetness (think IBS reaction) Hmm so I had to stop drinking it altogether. They lost a good customer in me!
They lost me too! i really loved ribena , i can't stand the new version . I bought it once , never again .
ilovebagpuss · 15/04/2021 18:13

Regarding the sweeteners, I was reading the book “spoon fed” about food myths and healthy eating. It had a very knowledgeable piece about how they are discovering that they trick your body initially but then it realises and actually causes sugar craving because the body isn’t a twat and knows, it can also cause the body to hold onto fat.
Not saying they don’t help people with weight loss but they are doing research into only using those natural sweeteners like Stevia which don’t cause the problem but of course it’s more expensive so the food and drinks companies just whack the chemical one in.
Back to the old adage of have the good stuff but not too often not the fake shit.
I hadn’t realised that’s why San Pellagrino tastes shit now.

DH loves to wind me up by pointing out all the hybrid snacks in the supermarket. He finds my booming cries of "is that really necessary?!" funny. Dick.

Sunny4876 · 15/04/2021 18:19

When I was a teen I practically lived on Campbell beef stew and then they 'improved the recipe . Couldn't stand it after.

Mmmmdanone · 15/04/2021 18:28

Snack a jack's sweet chilli. They used to be so sweet and spicy. Now they are so bland and boring with their "new recipe". I had a proper addiction to them at one time. Probably for the best...😂

AprilFoolaround · 15/04/2021 18:30

I love the new fruit pastilles but then I've been veggie since 1990 so hadn't had them since then. Jelly tots used to be my favourites but since they changed the recipe I don't like them. Smarties are vile too.

APurpleSquirrel · 15/04/2021 18:47

Percy Pigs - when the changed the entire range to vegan-friendly not only did the consistency change completely, now way too soft, they flavour became bland & very artificial. Such a shame & an odd choice when they already had a Vegan version.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 15/04/2021 19:24

@DontWannaBeObamasElf I bought a lemon meringue one out of curiosity! It doesn't smell too bad but I've not used it yet!

ChickenGotLegs · 15/04/2021 19:31

Irn Bru. Totally changed the recipe and it's disgusting.

NO I DO NOT WANT TO TRY SEABROOK CRISPS FLAVOURED BEER! (available in Prawn Cocktail and Cheese & Onion).

@CovidCorvid

Thornton’s. Once upon a time was nice, luxury chocolate.
I've never seen the appeal of Thornton's. In much the same way as I can't stand white chocolate - Thornton's to me just tastes like tainted sweet fat. Like a crap chocolate that's been sat in a box with a strawberry cream for too long - it all just ends up tasting of strawberry cream.

It doesn't smell too bad but I've not used it yet!

Exactly the kind of positive reaction they're hoping customers will have, I'm sure Grin

EastWestWhosBest · 15/04/2021 22:39

@SheldontheWonderSchlong

Fruit Pastilles! They are now 'vegan friendly' and taste nothing like fruit pastilles. Especially the orange ones which were my favourite and now taste more like throat sweets. After the awfulness of the last year it was a bitter blow. They've changed Jelly Tots as well. Sad
As I recall though Fruit Pastilles always were vegan friendly. They were vegi anyway.
EastWestWhosBest · 15/04/2021 22:40

@Starborn

Marmite is now Vegan Friendly - I don't know if they've changed the recipe, but it's very difficult to spread now, really determined to remain on the knife!

And I would really like half an hour alone with a baseball bat and the person who first said, "Caramel is too deliciously sweet - why not add SALT?"

Also marmite has always vegan.
BrownEyedGirl80 · 15/04/2021 22:42

Ritter Sport chocolate is delicious and doesn't taste palm oily at all

Horridcreature · 15/04/2021 22:46

Yes to the sanitary towels with scent yuck but I find it harder finding non scented.

Palm oil chocolate

YouWerePrettyIWasLonely · 15/04/2021 22:48

The smelly pad makers also sell itchy fanny cream ( I refuse to advertise for them). Coincidence I think not. Bodyform make much better sanpro.

YouWerePrettyIWasLonely · 15/04/2021 22:50

@Horridcreature Bodyform sensitive.

EastWestWhosBest · 15/04/2021 22:53

I was wrong about fruit pastilles. Not something I tend to eat anyway.

DrCoconut · 15/04/2021 22:57

Oh yes jellytots. They've ruined them. The Burger King bean burger was also ruined when they reinvented it. That one is irrelevant now because Burger King is completely off limits to me now (along with lots of delicious food places) due to gluten. I did not factor a coeliac diagnosis into my plan for my 40s 😫

MyNameIsElizaDay · 15/04/2021 23:07

Yes to San Pellegrino Chinotto!
Hails the start of summer 🥳

SilverStory · 15/04/2021 23:35

I love the g&t after eights. Ate 2 boxes with relish.

Feel free to send the unwanted ones this way Wink

TomHardyAndMe · 16/04/2021 00:06

Not big brands, but local well known gastropub have decided that all vegetarians want to eat vegan. Erm, nope. Some of us like/want actual cheese and don’t want carby seitan, thanks very much.

Works canteen has made everything low fat. Can’t eat there now. Angry

everythingbackbutyou · 16/04/2021 01:17

When biscuit Boost bars were 'improved' in the early 90s. The caramel used to be so delicious and kind of crunchy instead of the non-event it is now. Also, Quaker caramel granola bars used to be my favourites. The last box I picked up was 'improved', which I can only assume is shorthand for 'now with added air', they are now so insubstantial.
