Brands that jumped the shark

Is there a brand that you love, but they brought out a 'New exciting flavour!!' or seasonal variety and it just didn't work at all?

I'll go first - I love an After Eight, but the Gin & Tonic flavour is vile! Unfortunately we do like a gin & tonic, so have been gifted not one but two packs.

Another one - Walkers' cheese mix ups. Big fan of all the snacks individually, but shoving them all in one bag just doesn't work - they're somehow more bland and a bit soggy.

And no, I don't live on junk food, but brocolli and rice seems fairly consistent!

Tell me your brands that went off the rails...

The fizzy orange San Pellegrino! It used to be delicious but now they have taken out a load of sugar, it is a thin tasting disappointment!

BogRollBOGOF · 15/04/2021 09:14

All soft drinks where sugar has been substituted.

KFC (or at least some of the frainchaises) have now removed full sugar Pepsi, so the only drink to wash down a load of greasy chicken is water. Nothing against water, I drink a lot of it, but 1) I'm at KFC, 2) water doesn't wash the grease away effectively.
I don't want a banging headache and hours of after taste from drinking soapy sweetners.

Baxters Chicken & Vegetable soup was my standby snack lunch till it went gluten free.

Great if you're gluten intolerant but I'm not and it doesn't taste nice any more. Couldn't they do do a gluten free range alongside the original?

Homemade all the way now.

Gatekeeper · 15/04/2021 09:27

Blood orange San Pellegrino..icy cold it was sublime but they have taken out some of the sugar and its so disappointing..thin with no body to it

PJ04JCW · 15/04/2021 09:29

Yes to the artificial sweeteners! I had KFC the other day and had to have orange juice instead of Pepsi. Yes to San Pellegrino and Ribena.
Try Cawstons? soft drinks. They do lemonade, rhubarb, apple ones I think.

Ocean Spray cranberry juices and squashes all have sweeteners now too. Not a single one with just sugar. 😖

ThePontiacBandit · 15/04/2021 09:49

Honeybobbin we used to give lucozade as first line treatment for low blood sugar in hospitals, now we can’t use it because the sugar content isn’t high enough! Switched to a special glucose liquid instead.

TwitOrTwat · 15/04/2021 09:53

Yes to San Pellegrino. It was a thing of beauty. Completely ruined now. Why not let me decide if I want sugar or not?!

BogRollBOGOF · 15/04/2021 09:55

The whole point of Lucozade is that it was a glucose energy drink for pepping up people's health.

It was a perk of being pootly as a kid.

I bet Daley Thompson doesn't drink it any more!

MorrisZapp · 15/04/2021 09:59

I always found San Pellegrino too sugary so I might try the watery new reboot!

But the world truly has gone flavour mad. B and M are currently selling Drumstick Squashie flavoured dry shampoo.

Always sanitary towels - I used them all my life until they added a disgusting scent which gave me thrush. Now I use Bodyform which are much better and don't make me smell like my granny's old bowl of pot pourri

SheldontheWonderSchlong · 15/04/2021 10:04

Fruit Pastilles! They are now 'vegan friendly' and taste nothing like fruit pastilles. Especially the orange ones which were my favourite and now taste more like throat sweets. After the awfulness of the last year it was a bitter blow. They've changed Jelly Tots as well. Sad

yumscrumfatbum · 15/04/2021 10:09

Cadburys! I rarely eat chocolate and was delighted to be given a box of Milk Tray last week. I cannot even begin to convey how disgusting they were. They just tasted of bland fat, all the centres tasted the same ( I confess I tried them all in a vain effort to find a decent one) just vile.

Ilovedthe70s · 15/04/2021 10:44

Used to like a Muller fruit corner yogurt until they reduced the sugar and “improved “ the recipe, absolutely disgusting even the dog wouldn’t eat it. Two years on, the dogs dead and I’m still muttering about it when I’m in the dairy aisle.

FunnyWonder · 15/04/2021 10:59

Shloer has sweeteners now too. Awful. My DC can't tell the difference, but I noticed it straight away. I'll decide myself whether I need to reduce my sugar intake thank you very much! Sweeteners make me feel more thirsty and there's that unmistakable bitter under taste.

Clymene · 15/04/2021 11:04

The whole replacing sugar with sweeteners thing has absolutely ruined loads of good drinks.

How many overweight kids were drinking San pelligrino anyway?

apalledandshocked · 15/04/2021 11:11

@LadyCatStark

Cadbury’s for trying to hide the disgustingness of their palm oil filled ‘chocolate’ by adding sweets and biscuits. Just give us proper, original recipe chocolate. It makes me sad that DS will never know what a real Dairy Milk bar tasted like.
Tiny's chocoloney - particularly the half milk half dark bar. It isnt the same as Dairy Milk but its the closest I can find in flavour (and I did a LOT of tasting of diferent chocolate bars in my search Halo)
twilightcafe · 15/04/2021 11:54

Radio 2
I don't want Radio 2 to turn into a copy of Heart radio.

GizmoBasil · 15/04/2021 12:06

Zoflora Winter Spice is awful and just smells of cloves. Reminds me of having toothache. Sad

GizmoBasil · 15/04/2021 12:07

Fucking hell 🤣🤣 adds to basket

Blossomandbee · 15/04/2021 12:28

I dislike the limited edition flavours KitKat keep bringing out. DH bought me a KitKat Easter egg that was some funky caramel/fudge type flavour and it was revoltingly sweet. Same with caramel aero, I thought it contained caramel but no it's just sickly sweet flavouring.

I agree with all the above posts about chocolate. I used to be a chocoholic, hardly eat the stuff now.
Same with sweetened drinks. Sweetener gives me migraines, I hate that I'm being shoe horned into having no choices.
Also same to fragranced sanitary products. Who decided this? I haven't heard one person ever say they wanted fragrance, in fact it's actively avoided.
Why aren't companies reading the room!

JustNotFunAnymore · 15/04/2021 12:32
@mistermagpie Scented tampons are a complete mystery to me. WHO is benefitting from the scent?!
The nasties that create thrush??

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/04/2021 12:40

Another one for artificial sweeteners, I check everything, I don't drink juice but the evil fuckers creep into yoghurt and even sauces, pickles, soups.
They're everywhere.
I blame Jamie Oliver.

Unless you manage to get one of the Irish ones (Morrisons do a small selection at extortionate prices!) They're still made to the original recipe. Still the original shape, too.
