They’re not often caused by trauma though. ED are complex are there are a host of reasons for cause.

Anon778833 · 10/04/2021 19:45

@R3dFish

Simply not true it’s caused by trauma. It’s caused by a variety of things. A quarter of suffers are autistic.
Yes, she also had quite severe OCD evidently.

Frightening to think that anorexia has the highest death rate of any mental illness and is desperately under funded. Poor women. Hellish illness to live with.

RosaLuxemburgwasright · 10/04/2021 19:49

I clicked on the link on the GoFundMe page a couple of weeks ago and it was shocking. It's sad news but not at all surprising.

I was a big BB fan back in the day but stopped watching it when it went to Channel 5, possibly a season or two before that. It had become too much of a spectacle of cruelty and I felt bad watching it. I have come to hate this sort of reality show, I'd include Love Island, et al in that. They claim to take mental health seriously but it's clear from recent years that this is an utter bollocks. I do watch things like the pottery thrown down and the great British baker, etc. I'm not a reality show snob, I just worry about what these shows that are not about a particular talent do to the people who take part.

I agree that she shouldn't have been in BB but I have a feeling that she'd have pursued fame one way or another her whole life and that come what may it's likely that she'd have ended up where she ended up. It's tragic and so very sad.

Smurfsarethefuture · 10/04/2021 19:50

RIP Nikki. I think there was a sweet soul there.

PolarnOPirate · 10/04/2021 19:51

Loved her on Big Brother. She’s so lovable. I remember her saying, maybe on BB, maybe in an interview, that she had anorexia since she was 5 or so. Tragic, tragic life marred by that disease.

TheHumanSatsuma · 10/04/2021 19:55

@SimonJT

Poor Nikki, eating disorders are incredibly dangerous, big brother didn’t help she should never have been allowed on it.
I so agree with tis, BB started to recruit very vulnerable people. It changed from an amusing idea to a freak show. Nikki, Pete etc were exploited
Jellykat · 10/04/2021 19:55

Oh thats very sad news.. she was always so so vulnerable, but i always hoped she could find some strength to overcome things.

TheHumanSatsuma · 10/04/2021 19:56

durr this

Anon778833 · 10/04/2021 19:57

Yes I agree. I can’t imagine how it was deemed acceptable to exploit someone with Tourette’s.

EmeraldShamrock · 10/04/2021 20:00

BB started to recruit very vulnerable people. It changed from an amusing idea to a freak show. Nikki, Pete etc were.
Unfortunately they're the people who went for it. The series seriously went down hill the wilder the better.
I assumed she was attention seeking in BB many contestants thought that carry on was a chance to win.
Obviously BB would do a medical report or something on contestants?

ThanksItHasPockets · 10/04/2021 20:00

This is terribly sad. I remember a conversation with a friend who was a medical student then and now a psychiatrist about how she clearly wasn’t well when she was in the BB house. The ‘I’m so cold’ outburst gets chucked about as a meme but it was a symptom of her illness.

Unsure33 · 10/04/2021 20:00

Anyone who watched big brother would know that she was ill before she went in .
They were fundraising to try and get her private treatment , that does not mean she had not had nhs treatment as well .

It is very sad but sounds like it’s was very long battle for her .

bunniesanddaisies · 10/04/2021 20:01

There was a very unwell guy in the same series as Nikki. Shabaz, maybe?

EmeraldShamrock · 10/04/2021 20:02

Disclaimer: I only seen highlights of Nikki's year.
I saw one more after the original Jade goody RIP.

Ghislainedefeligonde · 10/04/2021 20:03

Gosh those photos are absolutely shocking. Poor woman, she must have suffered so much. Heartbreaking. May she rest in peace

Unsure33 · 10/04/2021 20:03

@Bagamoyo1

Give it a rest . I bet you have idea what treatment she has had during her life .

Arrierttyclock · 10/04/2021 20:05

It's incredibly sad I feel so bad for her. I used to have an ED and I'm now pregnant and was crying last night worrying about how much weight I'm going to put on. This puts it into perspective

CosmicComfort · 10/04/2021 20:06

Anorexia nervosa is such a cruel illness, so terribly sad 😢

I think a lot of people just don’t realize how dangerous the illness is and even today, it is terribly difficult to access specialist support. The thresholds for NHS treatment are so high but people need support before they get to the brink of serious physical health problems.

My thoughts are with her family and friends and all those affected by Anorexia💐

Mugginyouleftrightandcentre · 10/04/2021 20:09

I agree that after seeing those pictures on the GoFundMe, her death is not surprising I guess. They are truly shocking. She had suffered severely since 8 years old, way before she was ever in the spotlight or even the Internet and I agree it can be trivial to link it to 'social media' or similar, although I'm sure it doesn't help sufferers of anorexia. She had had a lot of treatment throughout her whole life but I guess sometimes it is never enough.

I feel really upset about it, I'm not sure why. She was a similar age to me and I think her illness had robbed her of so much of life even before she died. Its just so sad.

I still use 'Who is she' all the time Smile

Umbivalent · 10/04/2021 20:12

@Bagamoyo1

What breaks my heart is that the amount of public money that will be spent on a lavish send off for a 99 year old royal would probably have saved Nikki and many like her. Sorry to make it political but cases like this always make me reflect on the priorities of spending.
I'm not sure that a private funeral with 30 people in attendance counts as "lavish", does it @Bagamoyo1?
wishingitwasfriday · 10/04/2021 20:16

@corcaithecat

I’m sorry to hear that some poor young woman has succumbed to Anorexia and died, but I haven’t a clue who she is, even after googling?
So why do you feel the need to comment? Just to prove you didn't watch Big Brother and that you're so much better than those who did?
Bimblybomeyelash · 10/04/2021 20:17

So sad. This really shocked me. She was so
vibrant on Big Brother, back in the days when it was properly entertaining TV. I’d never watch any of that sort of crap now as it’s all fake tan and lip filler clones. But she and Pete were real people who were fun to watch. RIP Nikki.

2020nymph · 10/04/2021 20:18

@LittleDoritt

The NHS provision to battle anorexia is disgraceful in this country. It's devastating that she didn't get the help she needed. I know her family's pain all too well. My sister was refused NHS help as she had a BMI of 16.6 which wasn't considered low enough for anorexia treatment. She died of multiple organ failure brought on by anorexia, just a bit younger than Nikki, and the hospital refused to apologise in any way for failing her so badly.

I'm so sorry for your loss @LittleDoritt and for how badly you were all let down.

insideoutsider · 10/04/2021 20:20

I think the 'Who is she' questions might be in reference to her famous quote 'Who is she?!' in Big Brother.

It's so sad. In our society, the saddest people seem the most fun to watch. Really sad.
