Here's an article from Stanford University about the harms of wearing masks. The fight or flight thing chimes with me, I've had panic attacks again since having to wear them

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7680614/#ffnnsectitle

It concludes:
The existing scientific evidences challenge the safety and efficacy of wearing facemask as preventive intervention for COVID-19. The data suggest that both medical and non-medical facemasks are ineffective to block human-to-human transmission of viral and infectious disease such SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19, supporting against the usage of facemasks. Wearing facemasks has been demonstrated to have substantial adverse physiological and psychological effects. These include hypoxia, hypercapnia, shortness of breath, increased acidity and toxicity, activation of fear and stress response, rise in stress hormones, immunosuppression, fatigue, headaches, decline in cognitive performance, predisposition for viral and infectious illnesses, chronic stress, anxiety and depression. Long-term consequences of wearing facemask can cause health deterioration, developing and progression of chronic diseases and premature death. Governments, policy makers and health organizations should utilize prosper and scientific evidence-based approach with respect to wearing facemasks, when the latter is considered as preventive intervention for public health.

I think the youngsters are being driven by the social media empty virtue signalling that is so prevalent these days. See also ice bucket challenge (how many actually donated to charity?) and posting ‘make up free’ selfies to raise awareness of ‘insert random charity”.

Apologies re getting funeral stuff wrong, I suspect a mixture of confusion over guidance/legislation/ anger made me share without checking.

@SloeSummer not in London but I spent a lot of time there when I was a kid, my nana lived in Putney near Wimbledon Common.
I live in Wiltshire.

Ah, I'm sure there's much better nature watching there.

Curlygirl06 · 19/04/2021 11:12

@SloeSummer actually when I stayed with my friend in Ilford, we went for a walk round the neighbourhood at about 1am and I saw loads of foxes. In all the years I've lived here I've only ever seen one!
Mind you, depending which area of town you live in here, and the wind direction, you can hear lions and wolves sometimes from Longleat!

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 19/04/2021 11:41

There's a bat cave at Chester Zoo. Depending on how you feel about zoos generally, of course. It's a huge open area and the bats are all free flying. You walk along the path it's virtually pitch dark and the bats are all navigating themselves around you with their marvellous sonar etc.

we have a fox that visits our back garden, i was terrified when i first saw it because this massive thing ran past me in the dark and i was like WTF but i love it now. I watch for him(?) sometimes. I want to feed him but DP says no. He's probably right. I dont let the cats out at night though now just in case.

DS loved it when we could see all the fox's prints in the snow and see where he had been in our garden.

SloeSummer · 19/04/2021 12:30

I love foxes too

I see them a fair bit in london but I never see bats. My friends are partly disinterested because they reckon they are everywhere. Bats clearly avoid me for some reason!

Go and stand near a church at twilight. You'll probably see them then. We occasionally see them in the garden as we're near a church. My friend's practically next door to a church and she sees them in her garden a lot.
BogRollBOGOF · 19/04/2021 12:52

I've seen a few buzzards recently.
Once saw a kestral while running. Such a neat, elegant bird.
Loads of pheasants too. I've heard that they're more abundant due to disruption to the shooting season last year.
If I run early in the summer, I occasionally see hares.
A couple of weeks ago I saw a gold crest, had to google that one!
(Maybe the masky person on that walk was scared of catching it from gold crests More wildlife than humans on that one!)

I live in the suburbs of a city, and it's amazing how little distance I have to go for wildlife Smile

There were bats in the house that I grew up in, my mum reckons there were 100s but I think they just all look the same and she kept seeing the same ones over and over again!

MrsEWeatherwax · 19/04/2021 15:35

The pheasants around here, have got a death wish especially the males. Loads knocked down poor things.
The other day I had to stop the car to let the dopey thing cross the road( I made sure nothing was behind me)
Re masks mine hasn’t now been washed for a week and lives in my jeans pocket, I’m going to catch some other disease from it. 🦠

CruCru · 19/04/2021 15:37

Last summer a bat flew into our bedroom. I was more or less asleep but my husband opened all the doors and windows to encourage it to go back out. It’s really hard to get a bat to leave a room, we discovered.

CruCru · 19/04/2021 15:38

I’d never realised how long bats can live for - I’d always thought they were a bit like mice.

Worldgonecrazy · 19/04/2021 15:44

Love bats - my cat caught one once 😩

Worldgonecrazy · 19/04/2021 15:46

Has everyone seen the footage of Keir Starmer being evicted from a pub by the landlord? I really hope more hospitality venues follow suit for all MPs who have supported this madness. If I ran a venue I would also be banning any one who has been a propaganda mouthpiece.

WouldBeGood · 19/04/2021 17:00

@Worldgonecrazy yes! It’s so funny. And his response/ what a wet weekend he is. So glad to see him publicly called out for his lack of opposition.

SirSamuelVimes · 19/04/2021 17:45

I was happy to see Starmer getting kicked out of the pub too. The landlord was absolutely right to call him on his lack of interrogation of the gov response - it's like we have no opposition at all right now.

I miss seeing foxes. I used to live in a suburb of Leeds and we got them all the time, just wandering up the street. Next doors garden had a den. Then we moved out of the city and are now semi rural and I haven't seen one in years. Farmers and their guns make them pretty scarce around here. I miss seeing them though! (Although not hearing them mating, Jesus that's a noise I can happily never hear again!)

MercyBooth · 19/04/2021 17:49

Starmer has predictably gaslighted him and branded him a Covid denier.

He isnt a denier He was interviewed on Talk Radio earlier.

Pub landlord Rod Humphris reveals why he told Keir Starmer to leave.

"His security grabbed hold of me and restrained me... he's failed this country and he's failed me. Anybody who voted for lockdown is not welcome in this business".

Pub landlord Rod Humphris reveals what he told Keir Starmer before he told him to leave.

"It's his job to challenge the government. He's utterly failed... he didn't respond to my points. He said don't lecture me on this".

MercyBooth · 19/04/2021 17:52

I hope hairdressers and barbers follow suit.

No! That's brilliant! Well done that landlord. He deserved it.

I agree. This government has not had a proper opposition for quite some time and it is worrying. Questioning policy and requiring robust justification is not being a covid denier.
MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 19/04/2021 18:26

I had an amazing Sunday tea out last night in a heated teepee in the garden of a local pub in England . Was lovely. I'd do it again with weather like we have! I'm in wales so am being unethical and betraying wales according to Drakeford's supporters!

CruCru · 19/04/2021 18:56

Today we went to the zoo, had lunch at the seafront and had an ice cream on the (deserted) beach. Tonight we’ll get a curry.

BogRollBOGOF · 19/04/2021 21:47

I love it when we can share our little crumbs of freedom.

DCs back in school (DS1 detached OK too)
I had an outdoor fitness class
Swimming lessons.

Superficially close to normal.

DH has posted off DS's passport. We'd forgotten it was expiring. We're not used to neglecting them so much. I've never been keen on the post office, but with the panic attack in the neighbouring pharmacy last autumn, I'm not comfortable about going in there.
