Oh yes, I forgot about dogs! Mainly the fact they must be on a lead at all times or clearly they will eat your baby.
Cat shit, how much shit really ends up in your garden?
Boden
Children and their academic achievements
Germs

The Netherlands would be a good choice for you. Fancy cars and houses are regarded as flashy. Showing off is disapproved of. They are quite Calvinist in their attitudes.

VenusClapTrap · 09/04/2021 08:54

That was supposed to quote the question of where to go to avoid ‘keeping up with the Joneses’

Vargas · 09/04/2021 08:57

On MN - The Royal family, playground politics, parking

In Real life - weight loss and looking younger, and alchohol - some friends and family seem obsessed with telling me how much/how little they are drinking

EvilOnion · 09/04/2021 09:09

Covid - it's here to stay, we're living it right now yet some people can't seem to talk about anything else. We need to deal with it, get back some semblance of normality and start to move on with the risks at the back of our minds.

Owning your own home - I'm not in a position to own and most likely never will. I've been told it's important to get in the property ladder yet there never seems to be a good reason that would account for the years of financial hardship we'd have trying to get a deposit together.

bathmatty · 09/04/2021 09:13

On MNs the obsession with having 10 yrs of living expenses saved.

Fembot123 · 09/04/2021 09:15

Covid

frumpety · 09/04/2021 09:22

Pre covid, I would have said Germs.

Use by dates on food.

Cake, the vast majority of sponge cakes are rubbish !

badassbitch · 09/04/2021 09:26

shimmyshimmy i live in australia, one of the reasons was stop feeling like i was competing to keep up with the joneses. I have lived in Victoria and now live in Queensland. Admittedly never lived in a city. BUT no one gives a shiny shite what any has, how they dress, how they talk, what they drive, what house they live in. You can have a street where there is a run down shack, next to a palace. Your doctor can be dressed in a singlet, boardie and thongs, and call you 'mate'. I love it!!!

You can spot a new pom a mile off. I never really fitted in in UK, cos i just dont have a material bone in my body so it suits me down to the ground.

SnoopyOnALude · 09/04/2021 09:29

Class

On MN anyway, in the real world, no one talks about it and they certainly don't talk about it in the embarrassingly pompous manner that some posters on MN do Grin

Reality TV

NoWordForFluffy · 09/04/2021 09:58

@JustGiveMeGin

On here - competitive need to prove how little people care about appearance by stating repeatedly that the last time they wore makeup was in 1963 and that was because their narcissistic mother made them trowel some on! In real life - keeping up with home decor trends, gone are the days when you got years out of decorating a room, now it's almost dressed like a person with a new outfit to follow the current acceptable fashion.
I've never seen the make up one on here. Maybe I naturally avoid threads which include such comments!

Mrs Hinch definitely attracts obsessives, judging by one of my old workplaces. They had to tell me who she was! 🤣

Danidandan · 09/04/2021 10:07

Social media.
The way others parent (specifically, feed) their babies.
Money.

Purplecatshopaholic · 09/04/2021 10:11

Defo covid. On here baby names and/or weddings are a constant source of amusement. But each to their own, fwiw my dog is my fur baby….

BurbageBrook · 09/04/2021 10:12

Screen time, I think a bit of TV never hurt anyone.

Oh definitely cars. Literally do not get the point of an expensive car at all. They do nothing for me.

If there is one thing people need to be MORE obsessed about it would be this.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 09/04/2021 10:39

Sports that you don’t play, but talk like you’re in the first team.
Hobbies that take over your and your families’ lives.

Kenshi · 09/04/2021 10:57

I'd second what a PP said about cars as they're bad for the environment and are an eyesore/ nuisance in the streets. I'd also add that they cause a lot of disease. If you're pregnant and you live in an area eith more traffic your child is more likely to have certain conditions. Pollution is also strongly linked to gynae disease like endometriosis, and of course asthma to name just 2.

I also dislike that people are so obsessed with what others think of them. Whether it's on social media or just in general. People care a lot less about you than you might believe. Easier said than done for some but try to live your life not thinking much about the opinions of others.

Hotcuppatea · 09/04/2021 10:59

Covid
People cycling on pavements

Bluesheep8 · 09/04/2021 11:20

Taking pictures of themselves

knackeredcat · 09/04/2021 11:43

YY to money, looks, diets, homes.

Being seen to be living a full, busy and FUN! life - so much toxic positivity and one upmanship. On work's Teams board it's all about runs, cycling, baking, art - all managed while meeting deadlines and having lots of pointless chattering meetings.

Yes, I'm jealous. Getting showered, changed and not having meltdowns are wins for me these days. Blush

BusterGonad · 11/04/2021 05:06

Shimmy I live in Myanmar now, no car, I live in a condo which is nice, high standard compared to the locals, but not compared to some expats, its got what we need, 24 hour electricity and clear tap water that you can use to fill your kettle up with. The joy of not worrying about cars is amazing, no more MOT fear, no more shame about driving an L reg 😂. I have a cheap Chinese branded phone, no one cares, I'm still into buying nice clothes and make up, that's part of who I am but I don't need to worry about fashions and what's in. I just wear what I like with no pressure to confirm.
