Wrong Casting?

As I read The Shipping News for the 250th time, I'm reminded again that Gerard Depardieu (questionable person, brilliant actor) should definitely have been cast as Quoyle.

The rest of the cast - Julianne Moore and Judi Dench were perfect. Kevin Spacey was all wrong ('a great, damp loaf of a body')

Which other film roles have been so completely miscast as this brilliant example Grin

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher.

LizB62A · 05/04/2021 01:43

@SusannaMorvern
That's exactly what I was going to say!
They should have cast the guy who plays Thor (all they'd have to do is make him look older - he's got exactly the sort of body I imagine when I read a JR book)

MadreDios · 05/04/2021 01:47

Anne Hathaway in One Day

Who remembers this film,
Beauty and the Beast (Emma Watson as Beauty )?
Firstly, before I get negative replies 🙃I went to see this premiere at the Odeon in Leicester Square with my daughter and her friends all dressed as Beauty and they loved it but if I’m being honest I didn’t think she was that great in the part ??

This is just what I was going to say! She was too sneering at the others in the village when in the animation, Belle wasn't like that at all. I just didn't feel like she was playing the part with any conviction. And her hair wasn't brown enough Grin. I think Lily Collins would have been perfect for the role.

DS watches it all the time and I get angrier about it every time it's on!

avamiah · 05/04/2021 02:55

ParadiseLaundry,
Yes, I totally agree with you about Lily Collins but i think they needed to cast a “Well Known Name”so Emma Watson was it at the time.
I’m also not one to comment on people’s looks, appearance but she was playing the role of Beauty ( Belle) and let’s be honest she wasn’t the Belle of the Ball .
That was the first thing that came across .

subbysammiexoxo · 05/04/2021 04:23

Agree with the Emma watson comments I have never agreed with her aas beauty/belle, also as a weird comment I think you could very much so mix or match jim carey and Mike myers roles. Also contraversially going on from that ginny in harry potter is defo played by the wrong actress

YesItsAPeacock · 05/04/2021 04:42

There are loads in the Harry Potter films who seem wrong to me (but then the films are quite poor) - none so miscast as Jim Broadbent as Slughorn. He’s clearly a camp, lush of a man. If Richard Griffiths hadn’t been miscast as Mr Dursley he’d have been perfect - Slughorn is Uncle Monty and they made him into Mr Chips.

Renee Zellwegger as Bridget Jones. So completely different to the Bridget in the book, who wasn't fat, just obsessed with weighing herself. Mostly she was about 58kg. Although the whole film did a great disservice to the books IMO.

MrsEricBana · 05/04/2021 05:14

Andi McDowell in Four Weddings & a Funeral 😫

avamiah · 05/04/2021 05:22

Just thought of another ridiculous casting .
Does anybody remember the film RED 2 with Bruce Willis ?
It was a great film then Catherine Zeta Jones comes in as a Russian CIA Agent( acting all sexy etc ) and the whole film loses its credibility .
Anyone remember it?

YesItsAPeacock · 05/04/2021 05:23

@ThisIsNotARealAvo

100% - the films were terrible. The thing about Bridget in the books was that she was pretty clever, just plagued with self doubt. In the films she was an idiot. Distractingly bad British accent too.

SecretCiderCellar · 05/04/2021 05:36

Hugh Laurie as the evil arms dealer in The Night Manager — the combination of his default ‘kind and twinkly’ expression (every time he looked at Elizabeth Debicki’s character, he looked as if she were his favourite niece on her wedding day, not armcandy he was about to waterboard), and the fact that he kept making very dim errors of judgement, made his whole Evillest Arms Dealer Ever hing incredible.

Notthisnotthat · 05/04/2021 06:27

Ginny was definitely miscast in the HP films, ruined the character for me.

GlitchStitch · 05/04/2021 06:31

Nicholas Cage in Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Just awful.
Either Kate or Leo in Titanic, probably her if she was supposed to be 17. She looked like his Mum.

zzizzer · 05/04/2021 06:35

I thought Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher too even before I'd opened the thread. God that was an awful film. Just awful. I don't know if anyone could have redeemed it though!

Wriggleout · 05/04/2021 07:35

Totally agree about Rene Zellweger as Bridget Jones. I read Bridget Jones right from the start when they were columns in The Independent. I thought the whole point was she really wasn't overweight at 9 stone 4, but obsessed that she was and that she was actually really cool, funny and attractive, but completely didn't believe that to be the case. My perception may not have been helped by the accompanying pic of her next to the column however.

But Rene Zellweger captured NONE of this.

MiloAndEddie · 05/04/2021 07:47

Tom Hanks in Da Vinci Code

FourTurnings · 05/04/2021 07:51

Carey Mulligan in The Great Gatsby.
Leonardo De Caprio in the Great Gatsby.

MiloAndEddie · 05/04/2021 07:54

Also agree about Slughorn! Love Jim Broadbent but he definitely wasn’t right.

GoToSleepBabyPlease · 05/04/2021 07:54

The guy who played Peeta in the Hunger Games. Just didn't work at all.

Virtually every Heathcliff and Cathy I have ever seen.

BalloonSlayer · 05/04/2021 08:20

I would add practically every Jane Eyre I have ever seen and definitely every Blanche Ingram I have ever seen.

Jane is supposed to be the plain, mousey, honest and kind heroine.

Blanche is the beautiful, rich, fashionable utter bitch.

Filmmakers always cast a beautiful Jane and a plain Blanche, or a beautiful Blanche whom they try to make look ugly.

They just can't get over their dogma that unpleasant = ugly. You would think the film industry of all environments would contain some people who have observed that, once or twice, really good looking and rich people can be quite sneering about people who are poorer and not so handsome as themselves. Hmm

Shosha1 · 05/04/2021 08:34

@SusannaMorvern @LizB62A I always though Liev Schrieber would have made a brilliant Reacher. Right physic and the brood persona
