What are your parents called by your children? What did/do you call your grandparents?

I never had any grandparents. Well, my dads mum was around until 2018 but I hadn't seen her or my dad since I was 3. She was nana apparently though I have no memory of this. I refer to my mums parents as nan and grandad even though they died before I was born.

My niece calls my mum nanny. No kids of my own.

I knew a girl who called her grandad Bumpy!

Granny or Gangan (they seem to be growing out of that) and Grandpa "firstname", i've no idea why they use his first name as well as their other Grandfather goes by a completely different name to Grandpa!

RedactedTaeFeck · 31/03/2021 16:31

I'm similar in terms of my own GPs, my mums parents died while i was quite young but they were granny and granddad. My Dads parents died when he was a child. My own parents were also granny and granddad but died when my DC were young/not born yet. DHs mum and dad also died before and shortly after DC arrived, she was nana no idea what he was.

My older brother is just G to his grandchildren,

Ours say Granny and Grandpa.

Mine are Grandma A (first name initial) and Grandad, Grandma B and Grandpa. My great nan is Nan.

My kids call my grandparents the same as what I call them. They also have a further two sets of "Grandma and Grandad" which is ridiculous really but they were already called that for previous nieces and nephews so it would be weird to have a different name which my kids use.

My parents are Nanna and Grampy.

ApplesPearsAndCrumble · 31/03/2021 16:34

my godson calls his GF 'Grumpy'. It's very cute. (GF is not in the leats grumpy and he adores the name!)

Camomila · 31/03/2021 16:39

nonno and nonna - my parents, Italian.
lolo and lola - DHs parents, Filipino.

When refering to them to other people DS1 calls them grandma and grandpa.

SingingSands · 31/03/2021 16:42

Granny (first name) and Grandad (first name) on my side and Granny (surname) and Grandad (surname) on DH's side.

If you just say "granny" in conversation you get "which one?" in reply.

aibutohavethisusername · 31/03/2021 16:43

Nanna first name
Nanna first name
Grandee

Topseyt · 31/03/2021 16:48

Just Grandma and Grandad. There is only one grandparent still alive now (my mother) so she is Grandma.

Autumn101 · 31/03/2021 16:51

Nana and Grandpa for my DPs and Nanny and Grandad for my ILs - both sets chose what they wanted to be called

HilaryBriss · 31/03/2021 16:51

Nanar and Grandy

SocraticJunkieWannabe · 31/03/2021 16:52

I only had a Grandad and a Grandpa alive for a few years as a child. My own DD has Nanny, Grandma and Grandad. All quite normal names!

mrsm43s · 31/03/2021 17:06

Grandma and Grandad and Nanny and Grandad.

If they want to distinguish between Grandads, they are referred to as Grandma's Grandad or Nanny's Grandad.

Preservethewood · 31/03/2021 17:09

Nan (used to be nanny) and grandad. Other grandmother is Dutch so Oma

PrudenceDictates · 31/03/2021 17:10

I had two grannies, DH two grandmas, so it's turned out that our DC have Granny and Grandad (my parents) and Grandma and Grandad (DHs).

2bazookas · 31/03/2021 17:10

There's 4 of us, our official titles are Granny, Mama, Grandpa and Grandad; but we're also called by our first names.

LadyPoison · 31/03/2021 17:47

Nain and Taid here

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 31/03/2021 18:54

My parents are the bog standard Grandma and Grandpa.

When i asked my inlaws (let’s call them Ginnie and Marcus) what they would like to be called by first-born grandchild, they looked at me like I was an idiot and said “Ginnie and Marcus”. So they are.

AmIaboringfart · 31/03/2021 19:07

My mum - Nanny
My dad - Granddad (firstname)
Ex-MIL - Grandma
Ex - FIL - Granddad (secondname)
Ex-GMIL1 - Granny
Ex-GMIL2 - Great Grandma
Ex-FIL - Great Grandpa
My granddad - Grandie

AmIaboringfart · 31/03/2021 19:08

*Ex-GFIL that should be

bigbluebus · 31/03/2021 19:12

As a child my grandparents were called Nana and Grandad (DMs side) and Grandma and Grandad (DFs side). My DCs Grandparents were Grandma and Grandad (My side) and Granny and Grandpa (DHs side).

mynameiscalypso · 31/03/2021 19:17

My DM refuses to come up with a name for my DS to call her. I have, therefore, christened her Big Momma. I don't know if it will stick but I'm really hoping it does.

The6thQueen · 31/03/2021 20:28

My mum - Little nana (she’s 5ft)
My dad - Big grandad (he’s 6ft 4)
My dad’s dad - Grandad’s daddy
MIL - nanaw
FIL - Naughty grandad

All named by the children at various points

itssquidstella · 31/03/2021 20:32

Grandma and grandad for both sets. One grandma occasionally refers to herself as 'gran'.

Nan and nanny definitely considered a bit infra-dig in our family.

captainprincess · 31/03/2021 20:33

Pops and Nana
