Council Tax- how much is yours

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 26/03/2021 18:14

I’ve read that council tax outside of London can be more expensive than inside, so I’m being nosy having just got my new bill.

I’ll start:
London, 3 bed terrace £1691.52 (or £169 over 10
Months)

Bloody extortionate imo!

OP posts:

West Oxfordshire, £2400 blummin pounds

xyzandabc · 27/03/2021 09:04

Oxfordshire £2930/yr
4 bed detached

KonTikki · 27/03/2021 09:10

£3275 per annum in Surrey.
3 bedroom detached.
Did appeal years ago, rejected outright.
I am being royally screwed.

poshme · 27/03/2021 09:25

Band F. 4 bedrooms.

£3300
😡

Not including water . Pay extra for garden bin.
We are one of the highest cost councils in the country. (Too many old people needing care)

BammBamm · 27/03/2021 09:40

Smallish 3 bed bungalow on a main road in a cheap area of country (NW). We will pay nearly £2,500 2021/22 with no water (around £50 a month on top for 4 of us).
It's a significant % of our income and I have no idea how they justify it. It's more than 1% of the value of our home to pay every year even before the mortgage. Its 1/3 cost of our mortgage Angry

BammBamm · 27/03/2021 09:41

We also have to purchase garden bins and then pay the annual subscription Angry

prettybird · 27/03/2021 09:44

Just to add that in Glasgow, we don't pay for garden (and food) bins, which are collected every second week. Green (general) waste bins are about to change to every third week and blue (recycling) bins are collected every fortnight. Glass bins are every 8 weeks.

Tenements and flats, with communal waste bins, are different.

The council is about to introduce charges for pre-arranged bulk collections Sad

At £3480 for a Band G, we pay a lot (and in Scotland, Bands E to H pay extra) but I don't begrudge it as it pays for many services, not just the dustbins and street cleaning: our fabulous museums and parks as well as education and social care amongst others.

Crimeismymiddlename · 27/03/2021 09:46

Bedfordshire, band A, one bed flat with single person discount I pay 92£ per month over 12 months so about 1100£ a year.

Vetyveriohohoh · 27/03/2021 09:51

Near Edinburgh about £290pm/£3500py

qualitygirl · 27/03/2021 09:51

Ireland- no council tax and no water bills, my bins are €24 per month for all 3. Waste, compost and fry recycling.

Vetyveriohohoh · 27/03/2021 09:52

Band g same as @prettybird

iluvpickles · 27/03/2021 09:59

Central Scotland, small 4 bed detached house and its £261 a month 😢 it's gone up over £40 since we moved in 3 yrs ago. Gd old Nicola Sturgeon 🙄

Originalyellowbelly · 27/03/2021 10:08

£2219.84 for a 5 bed detached in S.Lincs

grieving321 · 27/03/2021 10:14

Bristol. Ramshackle 4 bed. Over £3600. And most of the time they don't even collect the fucking recycling without scattering it all over the road (which is full of potholes).

Sceptre86 · 27/03/2021 10:16

4 bed detached £189 a month with water included.

jay55 · 27/03/2021 10:20

I remember when I moved from a 3 bed flat in Wandsworth to a 1 bed flat in Bristol and my council tax more than doubled, I could not believe it.

In tower hamlets now pay 92 a month over 12 months.

Elllicam · 27/03/2021 10:26

£3865 band H South Lanarkshire.

Larryslockdownlunch · 27/03/2021 10:33

I'm shocked at the amount of some of these bills!!

I'm coastal Devon in a 4 bed terrace and mine is just over £1500pa on band B

NeedSomeInfoAgain · 27/03/2021 11:15

There's very little point in this thread unless you quote your council tax band. Otherwise all you're doing is showing the national variation in house prices.

There's also no sense in comparing number of bedrooms and whether you're terraced or detached etc. There's such huge variation between a small four bed detached on an estate, and a large four bed detached on a large plot in a desirable village,.....even if they're in the same local authority. What matters is the relative value of each within that local authority area...the homes could be two bands apart in value and so have very different council tax rates.

It's also more sensible to compare the annual figure (without single person discount), not the monthly payment. Some authorities offer payment over 10 months and some over 12, so the annual figure is a much better comparison.

Otherwise this is all very entertaining, but as effective as a lot of people shouting into the wind.[ smile]

BashfulClam · 27/03/2021 11:17

Band d out inside Glasgow (water charges included) £180ish for a 3 bedroom townhouse.

Terryscombover · 27/03/2021 11:19

3450 a year for a 5 bed detached (does not include water). Sounds horrific, and it is, however it's a little cheaper over the border in Hertfordshire - but services much better here. You can see where the money is going.

Jericha · 27/03/2021 11:35

Band E south west England £2,091.

KenAddams · 27/03/2021 11:43

5 bed Scotland 20 a month

Camomila · 27/03/2021 11:48

Brighton £1800ish a year, 2 bed flat Band C

I don't think it's whether it's a cheap area of the country that's relevant, more the value of your property to other properties in your own local authority. So if most properties in your area are flats, small terraces and semis and bungalows tend to be more expensive (or at least were in 1991), you will be in a higher band than.most in your area and paying the level of council tax you mention. Granted, that could be the same band as a much bigger/more expensive property in another council area with higher property prices. But it's a system based on.local values, not national. You can challenge your banding if you think it's wrong related to others in your area.
