If you can drive and have a car, when did you last use public transport?

I haven't used any form of public transport for 7 years. What about you?

I used to regularly get the train for work meetings pre-covid (once a month or so) but I've avoided buses for years because I get travel sick on them. Trams are OK but not many places have those. For personal reasons last public transport was probably a train to London in 2015.

I went on a plane in DecemberSmile

I’ve had a driving licence for about 20yrs.

I haven’t used a bus for about 20 yrs.
I last used a taxi about 18 months ago.
I last used a train about 18 months ago.
I last used the tube/subway about 18 months ago.

Got the bus yesterday because I’m pregnant and tired and couldn’t face walking home. We live in London and most of the time our car is parked, we only really use it for trips out of town so this year it’s been fairly useless. Even with covid, I prefer to walk/cycle/public transport than drive in London because parking is a hassle and other drivers are a pain.

Last Saturday. I had a hospital appointment in central London which would have taken me the same amount of time as the train/tube did and cost way more in congestion charge and parking.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/03/2021 11:20

Since 1996.

For much of that time I have lived rurally, a 4 mile walk across fields, and a river, to the nearest bus stop, that had 4 buses a day!

Lexilooo · 25/03/2021 11:23

Pre-covid my commute involved using a park and ride so I used public transport 5 days a week. Post covid I got the bus once, to meet friends for a meal and a drink in summer.

Chemenger · 25/03/2021 11:34

Pre covid I had swapped to getting the bus to work instead of driving and I was loving it. I had a pleasant walk to the bus stop in the morning then listened to podcasts on the usually quiet bus rather than getting frustrated in traffic. Coming home wasn't so nice, buses always heaving. I did it in all weathers, walking about 2 miles a day in all (we live relatively rurally) and I really enjoyed it. I haven't been on a bus for a year.
Before that I lived in the US for a year without a car and used public transport every day (Boston, which has a brilliant transport system and insane drivers).

When I was working, I used to commute to London by train. Because I had a season ticket I also used to travel by train for shopping trips to my nearest big town (on the way to London). Since retiring a couple of years ago I have only travelled by train when going into London eg to see people or shows. Haven't done that for at least a year for obvious reasons!

I will be looking into getting back onto trains (and buying a senior railcard) once restrictions are over.

I have never used a local bus since moving here over 20 years ago. I used to use the buses in London though.

safariboot · 25/03/2021 11:48

Once a year when my car is getting MOTed.

I would take the bus to go to a bar, but the friend I would meet is too lazy to get the bus themself.

wendz86 · 25/03/2021 11:50

I have a car but get train to work or if i go into London for social events. Last time was Dec last year.

ProfYaffle · 25/03/2021 11:53

I live quite rurally, no buses but we're on the main London train line.

I normally commute by train to the nearest City but haven't since lockdown, mainly because they've run a reduced timetable in commuting hours for the past year Hmm

murbblurb · 25/03/2021 13:09

Jan 2020. Bus service here now every two hours weekday daytime, so even after covid won't be usable. Apparently there is a campaign for a bus an hour every day throughout not- London. Would be a lot cheaper than the destructive road building programme so will never happen.

takingmytimeonmyride · 25/03/2021 13:16

Last time I went on a bus was May last year when my car was being serviced, so I got the bus home and back again.

Last time I got a train was September when me and my DP went to London for a bike ride.

Normally there were would be many more times as I would take the kids on days out etc where I wouldn't drive (London) or we'd get a bus and walk back from somewhere, but obviously with all the lockdowns that hasn't happened.

MyCatLovesFish · 25/03/2021 13:17

Pre-Covid tube commuter. I stopped using the tube early March 2020 as I got increasingly uncomfortable about catching covid (my route was always jammed).

Have WFH since and that works well for me. Will not be going back to any form of public transport.

3CCC · 25/03/2021 13:18

Trip to London half term 2020 so used trains & tubes then
