If you can drive and have a car, when did you last use public transport?

I haven't used any form of public transport for 7 years. What about you?

Monday, to work. I don't drive in this city unless I absolutely can't get where I need to go on public transport. Since we're not going anywhere at the moment and DH does the supermarket shop when we can't get a delivery slot, I haven't had cause to drive in months. I walk a lot and cycle a bit too.

DuesToTheDirt · 24/03/2021 20:29

In normal times I use the train + bus to visit my mum. It's a 5 hr drive one way if you don't stop, so 6 hours with a couple of stops.

I rarely use public transport locally though - I drive or walk. Sometimes get the bus if I go shopping in town. It's 1.5 miles, which on top of walking round the shops is a bit tiresome.

Pre Covid, I used to regularly drive 50 miles to visit DD, leave the car at her house on the edge of the city, then use my free bus pass to travel in to her city centre, where parking is v scarce and ridiculously expensive (about £28 for a day). All the best restaurants, shops and tourist sites were there, so DD and I would bus in as needed.

I take the kids on a day trip via train or bus each summer to somewhere local ish, they get quite excited because we dont use it normally. We live in a fairly rural location and the times just aren't convenient (1 bus a week anyone??!) plus we have to drive 10 miles to the nearest train station.

I didn't pass my driving test until I was 23 and I spent a lot of time on buses before then :)

ralphiebabs12 · 24/03/2021 20:34

Got the coach into central London pre-first lockdown. Wouldn't want to drive there!

idontlikealdi · 24/03/2021 20:36

Exactly a year ago. Pre covid commuter.

GreenBalaclava · 24/03/2021 20:36

Last summer I got the train into London to meet a friend.

BikeRunSki · 24/03/2021 20:36

I got the park n ride bus into York a few days before lockdown last spring.

milveycrohn · 24/03/2021 20:43

Used the bus today. Walked a couple of miles, and got the bus home.
Of course, I have to remember the face mask, etc.
Since lockdown, I have used the train (Last December), but not the Underground (I live near London). So underground was Feb 2020 before lockdown.
Also used the car today.

LubaLuca · 24/03/2021 20:44

I got the train into town for a night out last February. I had to get a lift to and from the station though, due to living in the countryside with no public transport at all. Previously I lived in the suburbs of a big city and used public transport more often than the car. If it's there I prefer to use it.

fiorentina · 24/03/2021 20:47

Just over a year ago - train commuting to work. Since then I’ve been WFH and been to London once by train to meet colleagues.

Username0981237645 · 24/03/2021 20:48

Not counting aeroplanes I last used a train in July 2020 I had to go drop my old car off in Southampton and didn't fancy driving alone so we got the train before that perhaps San Francisco September 2018.

TheLumpySofaCushion · 24/03/2021 20:48

Hiya, OP.

What are you hoping to understand from your question?

PivotPivotPivottt · 24/03/2021 20:50

Passed last February, got the bus a few days later and then got my car a few days after that. Haven't been on one since.

GintyMcGinty · 24/03/2021 20:50

October 2020 got the train to York for a short break. Before that it would have been March 2020 on a business trip to London.

GCAcademic · 24/03/2021 20:52

November 2019

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 24/03/2021 20:53

December. I had to go into London for work, and I don't want to drive in London.

FourWordsImMuNiTy · 24/03/2021 20:53

Depends what you mean by “can drive”. I’ve got a licence, but haven’t driven since 2003 (not counting moving the car out of the way for tradesmen). I last used public transport in February for a medical appointment, but in normal times it would be daily.

DH really can drive. He would also use public transport daily in normal times.

Doje · 24/03/2021 20:55

Just over a year ago. We made the decision to drop to one car just before Covid, so I would commute on the train a couple of days a week. I also took DS2 swimming on the bus. He loved it, and always asks when we can go on a bus again.

drspouse · 24/03/2021 20:56

Normally it's about once a week. I think this year it was in the Christmas holidays (do just pre lockdown), the DCs moaned about walking back from town in the rain.

CovidCorvid · 24/03/2021 20:57

Pre covid I’d sometimes get the train to work, 9 mins on the train and £4 return. Takes about 30 mins in traffic to drive, sometimes more. I normally cycle but if the weather is awful I wimp out and take the train.

rhowton · 24/03/2021 21:37

I only use it if I go to London for the weekend to see friends. I wouldn't use it in my hometown.

tinytemper66 · 24/03/2021 21:42

When I go to London for a visit.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/03/2021 21:42

Dec 2019. Took the train to go Christmas shopping.
We used the train reasonably regularly pre- Covid. I'm sure we will again.
We are moving to the edge of a city imminently. I'm sure we will use the bus there.

Biscuitsdisappear · 24/03/2021 21:48

Use the train to go to London about 2 or 3 times a year.
