I used to feel sorry for him when he described how his bones were gradually fusing together. When he disappeared from light entertainment I assumed his health had deteriorated so much he could no longer work.

The journalist in question being Gove’s wife, Sarah Vine.

I do wonder if this is a clumsy attempt to rebrand himself as a sort of doesn’t mind offending people Jeremy Clarkson/Jimmy Carr type?

The problem is, as awful as Jeremy Clarkson and Jimmy Carr can be, they usually have some awareness of how a joke is 10% words and 90% audience, medium and context. Lee Hurst clearly doesn’t.

When delivered out of context, over the wrong medium and to the wrong audience something that would have been ‘just’ a distasteful and misogynistic joke becomes a very creepy personal attack.

That's a vile comment but nobody goes after left wing comedians or the rags that publicise them in the same way as other objectionables.

I don't particularly like Lee Hurst and certainly don't like his revolting tweet but nor do I like the abuse on here, all using insults like cunt and twat. I'm not sure that's the best way to tackle misogyny

I always took that to be mis-dailymailjournalist rather than misogyny.

I have no doubt that were the sexes reversed, he would still have made the joke. Which would have still worked.

And it's clearly a good joke, as it bears repeating.

I got heckled by Rob Beckett less than 6 years ago because we were late due to new unsettled baby (tickets bought before even pregnant!) I can remember it happening but I'm buggered if I remember the details!
