Thank you!

I got married in January. Lots of white roses with ornamental deep blue thistles. I was a bit less than keen when the florist suggested them, but they looked amazing and matched my colour scheme.

vdbfamily · 16/03/2021 08:10

I married in May and had sunflowers. I absolutely loved them and on each table we had a small Hessian bag filled with sand with a small bunch of sunflowers in.

Itsthecatsfault · 16/03/2021 08:13

@Thedot90

Make the most of peony season! I was a June wedding and had peonies and roses, they were gorgeous.
I had pink peonies, white roses and eucalyptus. Early July wedding. The peonies were absolutely gorgeous. When we spoke about flowers, I thought the roses were going to be the main flower, but on the day the peonies were and they were perfect.

I had white avalanche roses, blue scabious, dark purple lisianthus, eucalyptus, freesias - it was very long and flowing and so beautiful

  • at the time my florist was thrilled with my choice as she said it made a change from her other weddings who were all going for cream or white roses

I was married late July. If I was marrying in the spring I probably would've gone for lily-of-the-valley and if I'd been married earlier in the summer probably peonies .

May wedding, an all red bouquet

InTheNightWeWillWish · 16/03/2021 08:25

Late Feb and we had iris, yellow roses and yellow gerbera. There’s the odd sunflower in there and some daffodils somewhere in the mix but not captured by photos. Then a bunch of yellow and purple things that I don’t know they are Blush

I can’t remember what our flower budget was but the whole wedding was £10k (including dresses, suits, car hire) so I definitely didn’t have a big flower budget. We got married in a church during lent, which meant no flowers could stay in the church after our wedding (church is in a period of mourning), so we only bought one set of flowers and used the church flowers to decorate the reception. If you’re having a flower that is out of season, have one or two of those and fill it out with something seasonal. I wanted one or two sunflowers then iris, the rest I asked the florist to make an early spring bouquet with those two colours in mind.

at my friends wedding, we all were given a flower if we sat on the end of a pew, and she collected them as she went down the aisle - her bouquet grew as she walked

I love that idea

rubyrose44 · 16/03/2021 08:47

Sunflowers, cornflowers and white roses, with a cake to match. The florist was delighted - for her it was an unusual request and she got to use her imagination as my only stipulation was sunflowers!

I’d suggest asking the florist's advice, as they are artists at heart and love to be creative Smile

Here's my bouquet - I carried tha garden! And my headdress, loved that. No idea on budget but it was 20+ years ago anyway.

Oh, and re budget I really can’t remember but the whole wedding (plus honeymoon) was under £3000 so we can’t have spent all that much!

Blackberrycream · 16/03/2021 08:50

Ex florist here.
June is great for seasonal flowers ( peonies, lilac, sweet peas)
Peonies are cheaper in season and huge so actually good value and very beautiful . Most of the flower budget is labour in terms of bouquets and corsages so go with the flowers you love for your bouquet . Spend money on your bouquet etc and keep table flowers simple.
I did a group of simple bud vases on tables.
I had a simple lily of the valley bouquet.

LovelaceBiggWither · 16/03/2021 08:53

My MIL gave us our flowers as a wedding gift (she arranged them as well). The colour theme of the wedding was pink. I said I had a preference for roses but as long as they were pink flowers all good.

She bought fucking carnations that had been dyed bright orange. I nearly died laughing when I saw them. The bouquets were nicely arranged but jesus how do you go from pink to neon orange?

So my advice would be not to say everything's OK, surprise me with pink.

VenusClapTrap · 16/03/2021 08:56

Thank you @clary ☺️ . Yours are beautiful too - I love the looser, more natural looking bouquets.

I can’t remember my budget, but I do remember telling my florist not to worry about the cost because my flowers were one of my top priorities so I was prepared to go nuts... A lot of it did go on decorating the conservatory where our reception was held though - it was a historic glasshouse with very tall iron columns holding up the roof, and I had trailing foliage twisting all around them.

Regarding peonies, they are expensive BUT they are very large flowers so you don’t need many. And your wedding is in peony season, which brings the cost down substantially.

HereBeFuckery · 16/03/2021 09:13

Amnesia roses, purple freesias and training ivy. Same roses for buttonholes and I think 2 x bridesmaids posies were same as mine but smaller.

To keep costs down on flowers to decorate I had rural friends fill the back of their estate car with a tonne of ivy and mistletoe and wrapped it around beams etc in the barn, and wrapped some around wicker wreaths for centrepieces with a white pillar candle in the middle. Then a bit of lavender and rosemary tied with ribbon on each place setting. I think I spent £150 on flowers in total. I could not believe the price of floral centrepieces! £50-100 per table!

LeafCutterAnt · 16/03/2021 09:15

Oh dear LovelaceBiggWither That's funny.

TheRedBalloon · 16/03/2021 09:17

We were married in October. I had a photo of my Granny's wedding bouquet (1921) and I asked the florist to do a copy of that. She'd had a floor length trailing bouquet of white roses, lilies, freesias, and lots of ivy.
I don't like lilies so asked our florist to replace them, she used sweet peas and lily of the valley.
For the table centrepieces my friend did dried flower arrangements which the guests could then take.

Iwantacookie · 16/03/2021 09:18

Married December I had no flowers.
I had a crystal bouquet and crystal table centre pieces. Beautiful and everlasting

June wedding.
Lilies, roses, daisies (actually white September Flowers ) with eucalyptus foliage.
I had a beautiful cake with the same arrangement in sugar flowers on top which I had box framed and still have hanging on the wall, 22 yrs on it still looks as it did the day we were married.

Itsthecatsfault · 16/03/2021 10:03

I think our flowers were about £650-700 in all. My bouquet, MOH, flower girl bouquet, flower girl hair flowers, buttonholes for fathers & ushers, corsages for mothers, table arrangements x 8, flowers for church and cake.

Our florist was a freelance friend of the family though who works out of her home so not sure if that made a difference to pricing.

Top tip - have a safety pin for when your mother’s corsage falls off and there’s a panic trying to reattach it! We had magnetic corsage attachments and my mother fidgeted with it and lost some crucial part of it. Cue much faffing trying to sort it out!

@aintnocoffeebigenough

Wow thank you so much everyone for sharing, what a lovely thread Grin I love them all so much and it’s given me lots of ideas! Keep them coming if anyone else would like to share Smile What a lovely happy thread!

Would anyone mind sharing roughly what their flower budget was and what they got for it? Sorry if that’s cheeky to ask! We are trying to do the whole thing at a very low cost and I have no idea which flowers are cheaper or more expensive. I bloody love peonies but apparently they cost a fortune, is that right?

Our flowers cost just over £300 - that was: 3 bouquets, 2 flower girl baskets, 7 buttonholes, 5 corsages, 8 medium table arrangements (in jam jars), 4 large arrangements (vase / jam jars). I think it was pretty cheap for the amount we got, but I went for seasonal flowers with plenty of florist choice, and loose / informal arrangements. Different florists will vary quite a lot - get quotes!!
MondayYogurt · 16/03/2021 10:16

Peonies from New covent Garden Market. You can get great big bunches of them.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 16/03/2021 11:46

Mine came out at a similar price to @Itsthecatsfault for roughly the same amount of flowers/arrangers. Similar set up in that she was a lady who was very talented with church flowers wanting to get into wedding floristry.
