Mother’s Day- do your teens bother?

DH is furious at DD13 and DS15. They just got home from 2 nights at their DF’s and he asked what they’d got me (he’d reminded both previously).
DD ordered something online yesterday... to be delivered to her DF’s tomorrow so it won’t be here.
DS didn’t get me anything. This is the 3rd year running and every year DH is cross about it. The tension makes for an unpleasant day.
I kind of think DH expects me to tell them off, but I don’t want a card/ present out of a sense of duty/ guilt. If they wanted to treat me/ let me know they appreciate me that’s different but I’m not going to insist. So now DH is angry at them, they’ve gone to their rooms and tomorrow is going to be uncomfortable. Again. Why does Mother’s Day have to be about conflict/ guilt in this house?
Sorry for the self indulgent rant.
Does anyone else have similar?

DH is absolutely furious. DS is known for his spiteful tongue but this... I don't think either of us can quite believe he said it. I'm dreading them all coming back.
I try my best to be a good mum but I've clearly allowed my older two to be very entitled and ungrateful. It's a bit of an eye-opener.

NotPaloma · 14/03/2021 15:12

My DH was going to pop to the DC's dad's house to get them to sign a card yesterday but I told him not to bother. They were at our house until Friday so felt a bit pointless on all fronts. They have both managed to send a text to me though.

IaltagDhubh · 14/03/2021 15:13

I’d completely forgotten about mother’s day until I saw this thread. 13 and 15 year olds obviously forgot too. I’m not fussed, but I guess I’d best send my mum an email... I see where my two get it from!

My birthday is next week. I don’t expect anything for that either, and frankly I’d prefer it was forgotten. I grew out of birthdays by about age 8. I’ve ordered myself some flowers, just because I normally pick some up in the supermarket from time to time, but I’ve not been in a shop for a year and I realised that I was missing the flowers. I’ll bake a cake, and I’ll please myself on the flavour rather than making one that everyone else will like.

DS15 got me a lovely card with a message he wrote himself inside, and a plant.
He also made me waffles. His breakfast but my lunch as he didn't appear until midday Grin

Mine was in ASDA at midnight picking me up a couple of candles, chops, flowers and a card. She is 19 though.

activitythree · 14/03/2021 15:34

She definitely did not buy chops Confused

CHOCS Grin

17yo and nearly 15 yo here. They made pancakes and glazed bacon (with support/supervision from Dh); chose and ordered a thoughtful present together; bought/made cards (dd wrote a long lovely message, Ds made a voucher for gardening help. They came on a long walk with relatively little complaint, and are helping Dh cook a roast later. I’m genuinely really touched as it’s the first year they’ve really gone to town on the whole day out of choice. Sorry to hear about those having not great days: teens can be thoughtless and take us for granted.

ineedaholidaynow · 14/03/2021 16:01

@activitythree I bought lamp chops for my DM from our local butcher as a special lunch treat for her today! She can't walk to the butchers as too far away and she really loves their lamb.

My teen DS has made me a card and baked a cake, and has asked if I mind watching Top Gear later! He normally mooches round the shops to get me something but not doing that during lockdown.

JackieweaverhasALLtheauthority · 14/03/2021 16:08

i have had a beautiful scented candle and some very meaningful vinyl plus cards with lovely, lovely messages in from my teen/early 20s sons.

activitythree · 14/03/2021 16:11

@ineedaholidaynow

I do actually like chops too, so maybe not such an odd gift!!

AlexaShutUp · 14/03/2021 16:11

Yes, my 15yo always makes a big effort. However, I think this is between you and your dc - your DH needs to butt out and stop making an atmosphere.

theliverpoolone · 14/03/2021 16:27

I wasn't sure what to expect from dd(13) (she got me a packet of biscuits last year!), but I'm now sitting listening to one of those compilation cd's of 100 'hits' for 'Mum', wondering who on earth had the job of deciding these are the sort of songs 'mums' like Grin Grin

RedGoldAndGreene · 14/03/2021 16:32

My teens make a big effort and pay too.
Dc2 reminded dc3. It helps that they walk past a supermarket on the way to school so buying a card is easy.

MrsJBaptiste · 14/03/2021 16:39

I've been with my own mum all day so not sure what to expect when I get home although I'm not holding my breath! My 14 and 16 years olds are known for lavishing attention and gifts on anyone but then I've always gone on about Mother's Day being a commercial waste of money. Probably dug my own hole there! 😁

Bonheurdupasse · 14/03/2021 16:41

Sorry @curlyqueeny... I know teens are selfish but this is a bit beyond that...

catmandont · 14/03/2021 16:43

I usually get a card, this year I got some flowers too (co-op flowers actually quite nice, who knew!).

I have also for the first time declared myself to be having a day off. When asked what I wanted for tea, I cheekily said 'don't mind', as that's the response I normally get. DH and DD15 are currently in the kitchen attempting their first roast while I settle in to watch an afternoon of netball on the TV. Happy days 😊

Just4thisone · 14/03/2021 16:44

My older children have not. But it does not bother me. Money is not great for them and I would rather they spend money on something they need. Rather than me.

SunshineCake · 14/03/2021 16:47

My eldest organised his own stuff, the youngest asked dh to take him to the shop. The middle one is sleeping. I did pick up a couple of small things for the youngest to give me and a craft magazine for dh to give me but I needn't have bothered. All organised gifts for me except one dc and we'll see when they get up what if anything they did.

@tunnocksreturns2019

I would love to see a picture of the chocolate orange made into a rose!!

Rillington · 14/03/2021 17:02

Your DH should be arranging cards/presents. They are too young.

13 and 15 is too young Confused

AlexaShutUp · 14/03/2021 17:09

Grin at 13 and 15 being too young! My DH is crap at presents, so dd has been in charge since she was around 8!

SoupDragon · 14/03/2021 17:12

😂😂

No teen is too young :)

TheChosenTwo · 14/03/2021 17:13

My teens are 15 and 16 and both made me cards. One got up early and made me scones, the other had ordered me a box of my favourite sweets. Both really thoughtful. Dh took ds yesterday to the shops (he’s 9) and ds chose a card and a candle shaped like a squirrel. Random choice but it’s lovely and the fact that he thought I’d like it is what counts.
I don’t ever expect (or want) extravagant presents and over the top declarations of me being the best mum on the planet, a card and a hug will do me just fine.
