I cry at most things Blush especially things like the Good Dinosaur, Up etc... but these are “grown up” and they still make me cry.

The spies goodbye in Agents of Shield, and the bit where all the adults are volunteering to die so that others can live in The 100 Sad

Goodbye Mr Chips...both the old black and white original and the one with Martin Clunes (who did an excellent old mans voice). Seeing all the names of the boys who lost their lives in World 31 and his love for all of the children. I even have a tear in my eye writing this now!!

AlbaAlba · 10/03/2021 12:00

There seems to be a theme for mine - anything where people have to say goodbye to their children or anything about slaughter or injustice and suffering for a group of people.

  • HP when Lily says goodbye to Harry in his cot, just before Voldemort kills her. It's the "you are so loved" that gets me because obviously that saves him, but then he ends up with the abusive Dursley's and it's another 10+ years before he knows any love again.
  • "That's my boy" scene when Cedric dies in HP Goblet of Fire.
  • A scene in 911 Lonestar which has got me twice now, where there's a solar flare and the astronaut in the ISS is dying from radiation and manages to get patched through to his kid and just talks to him, doesn't say what's happening, and then there's silence.
  • In Mary Poppins 2 (which I did not otherwise like) Ben Wishaw as a widower who couldn't cope, even though I couldn't buy him as a father. Think Ben Wishaw in Lilting also got me.

Unfairness/injustice/collective pain / or overcoming that now knowing how many have previously suffered:

  • Imitation Game
  • In a similar vein, in The Durrells, when the police went to arrest Sven for indecent behaviour (being gay), and his sort of mixed anger and acceptance that this was the way the world was
  • Pride miners scene as a PP said
  • Blackadder Goes Forth when they go over the top.
  • The Help
  • The 911 episode/scene where Michael (black architect, wife's a police sergeant) is stopped by the police because he's driving a nice car, and the situation escalates horribly, and his young child is in the car. Like the scene in the Durrells where Sven is arrested, I think it's the hopeless acceptance that this is what is happening, and there's nothing you can do because the system is against you.

It’s often the combination of the music and the scene that sets me off. I don’t think I’d have bawled quite so much at Cal dying in Casualty without Jake Bugg’s ‘Slide’ playing in the background. Although that’s not true of my worse offender, ‘A Dog’s Purpose’. So many, many tears - sad tears, happy tears, big, snotty, heartbroken tears! I can never watch it in company again.

Carolina24 · 10/03/2021 12:06

The scene in Stepmom when Susan Sarandon says that she will be children's past and Julia Roberts will be their future. Welling up thinking about it now.

This!

Also the scene in A Little Princess where Sarah finds her father and he doesn’t recognise her, and she’s desperately trying to get him to remember who she is while the police carry her away, and she’s desperately crying ‘papa!’. Tearing up just thinking about it!

Redannie118 · 10/03/2021 12:11

Love actually. Emma Thompson crying in the bedroom
Highlander, as Connor says " Goodnight my bonnie Heather" while " who wants to live forever "plays.
Its a sin as Colin dies.
The final episode of Supernatural. Wont issue spoilers but sobbed like a baby. When they started to play " Brothers in arms" I thought I may need an ambulance !
Outlander. When Claires baby Faith is born dead and shes rocking it and singing oh I do like to be beside the seaside. Heartbreaking.

Ineedaweeee · 10/03/2021 12:14

My girl

ReleaseTheCracken · 10/03/2021 12:31

Filling up over Daddy, my Daddy.
YY to Hazel in Watership Down, permanently scarred by that film.
John Cofee in Green Mile, OMG.

Brief Encounter, this pain can't last.....

IntermittentParps · 10/03/2021 12:31

I saw 'War Horse' on stage & Ive never been so glad for a pair of opera glasses in my life.
Oh God, I saw it on stage too and I was in bits the minute Joey appeared as a foal.

Whylurkwhenicanjoinin · 10/03/2021 12:39

Many of the usual ones like Schindlers List but....the last 10 minutes or so of District 9! I cry thinking about it. Such a great film but I did not see that ending coming.

FeelinSpendy · 10/03/2021 12:40

Beaches, Dumbo, Up, and any movie or tv show where a pet dies, baby animal loses a parent (Bambi etc), or one or both of an elderly couple dies (the only scene in Titanic that got me was where the elderly couple is cuddled together on the bed while the water rushes in).

JimmyJabs · 10/03/2021 12:45

Pretty much all of the Green Mile. I can't even look at the thumbnail for it on Netflix and have to scroll past quickly so that it disappears. The botched execution made me feel sick as well as tearful.

Luckystar1 · 10/03/2021 12:54

The opening scene of the second series of Handmaids Tale, with Kate Bush ‘this woman’s work’. Holy god, I just cry and cry. I sometimes watch it on YouTube, just to depress myself!

Amazing!

AnswerTheQuestionDamnYourEyes · 10/03/2021 12:55

Has no-one mentioned A Monster Calls? I've read the book, seen the film and the play and every version makes me proper sob.

And most of the ones mentioned. Definitely worse since DC!

PebbleBubbleFountain · 10/03/2021 12:58

The Royle Family - The Queen of Sheba. When Barbara comes down to find Nana lifeless in her bed and screams for Jim. Then at the hospital when all the family are running round trying to find her room and the music that plays over this scene (Scarlet Ribbons)...gets me every time!

MsTSwift · 10/03/2021 12:58

The end of Billy Elliott where the dad brother and best friend are at the ballet and he comes on. Don’t know why but gets me every time!

Also weirdly the end of LaLa land. When she sees how their life could have been. Maybe I was hormonal that day but I couldn’t stop crying as we came out of the cinema my dds kept asking why but I couldn’t explain. Sat in the pizza restaurant afterwards crying!

eosmum · 10/03/2021 13:01

Goodbye Mr Chips. both the B&W and the recent one with Martin Clunes. Proper snots and tears.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 10/03/2021 13:04

Bridges of Madison county where she's in the truck at the traffic lights and he's just ahead.

anamazingfind · 10/03/2021 13:07

Babe's mummy sent for pork chops.

Not a film, but I wail at Freddy Mercury's last video.

Take off Apollo 13

FrankReynolds · 10/03/2021 13:10

The Disney movie Soul. I absolutely broke down at the end and it makes you think about your life and everything. So beautiful

Rokerwriter · 10/03/2021 13:10

The Sound of Music. Firstly, when the Captain joins in the children's singing after banning singing in the house for so long. And then a bit later, at the singing competition, when he can't get through Edelweiss and Maria comes on to support him, and the whole audience joins in - singing bless my homeland forever, knowing their homeland will never be the same again... Oh dear Lord, I'm off again...

Bibidy · 10/03/2021 13:15

The Royle Family, when Denise is in labour in the bathroom with Jim.

Also the Queen of Sheba episode, loads of it but especially the scene where Nana says she got her wish and thanks Barbara for not putting her in a home. Sad

weebarra · 10/03/2021 13:16

The part in His Dark Materials where Billy Costa is clutching a dried fish instead of his daemon Ratter.
The book is sadder though, the TV show conflated two different scenes.

Cluckycluck · 10/03/2021 13:16

Everyone's Waiting - Six Feet Under
I can't listen to Sia - Breathe Me without thinking of it and bawling my eyes out. I've rewatched the show so many times and everytime that episode kills me.

Bibidy · 10/03/2021 13:16

OMG YES to La La Land!

I don't think it's weird though, it really upset me to see how their life could have been, I was devastated Grin. Cried my eyes out in the cinema.

zukiecat · 10/03/2021 13:17

Shelby dying in Steel Magnolias, and the funeral scene.

Baby Dumbo
Bambi's mother dying

King Arthur's funeral when they push his funereal boat out into the sea, then fire flaming arrows into it to make a pyre.

Captain Von Trapp singing Edelweiss at the concert.

Loads of Last Kingdom ones!

Ragnar The Elder and his wife and father dying.
Uhtred saying "Ragnar" when Ragnar rescues him from the slave ship.
Uhtred finding his baby son's grave.
Halig's death

The saddest TLK moment of all Thyra's death, never get over it
