Jacket potatoes and omelettes are not a dinner. Discuss.

According to my usually fairly normal and reasonable DH, jackets potatoes and omelettes are not " a dinner". He is unable to expand upon this statement and when questioned, just keeps repeating "not a dinner".

Does anyone else have an opinion on this, and if you agree with him, do you have any evidence to back up this assertion?

@Gwenhwyfar

"I can just imagine my husbands face if I produced either as our main meal for the day!"

This makes me so glad I'm single.

Makes me glad I’m married to a non twat!

We have both for our tea often. My dp is always chuffed with either.

littlefireseverywhere · 09/03/2021 14:16

Sounds like a great dinner to me.

Doingitaloneandproud · 09/03/2021 14:19

I usually have an omelette for dinner once a week. I'd consider both dinners

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 09/03/2021 14:19

I've been known to have twiglets for dinner before.

1forAll74 · 09/03/2021 14:21

I would think that an omelette would be considered as a decent meal,or dinner. I usually do mine with cheese and mushrooms, and sometimes some chopped up bacon and spinach, and have a varied salad on the side. Some men might not see this as an adequate dinner, if they are used to piled up plates of something or other.

Meowchickameowmeow · 09/03/2021 14:30

It depends what you have with it, a jacket potato on it's own is not a dinner.

goodbyelenin · 09/03/2021 14:32

Omelette absolutely are a diner in my house, they are one of my perfect "can't be arsed to cook tonight" choice!

I know some people feel cheated if there's not meat involved (and you could add lardons or ham to omelette really) but what IS diner if omelette are not one? Confused

2021WillBeGreat · 09/03/2021 14:33

Of course they are dinner - they can be a light dinner or full dinner depending on how its served. They are also cheap so help with budgeting and easily accommodate different tastes.

VettiyaIruken · 09/03/2021 14:34

Any food you have for dinner is dinner.
If you eat it at dinner time, for your dinner, it's dinner. Be it a full roast or half a cheesecake and a tub of pringles.

For example. 😇

WeAllHaveWings · 09/03/2021 14:34

I wouldn't see a jacket potato with a bit of cheese as "dinner" unless I had a substantial lunch, but if you add to it a decent salad then yes it is a dinner.

My DH makes omelette for diner too sometimes 😂
Some people are weird on MN. If someone has an egg allergy, I can see the issue though!

DragonPoop · 09/03/2021 14:34

Anything can be a dinner, or a lunch. Why are there these arbitrary rules, just eat what you want when you want surely? Hmm

some posters had to ask permission to cook something else than turkey for Christmas...

people ARE weird about food!

LadyHedgehog · 09/03/2021 14:40

Oooh controversial. We are having cheese and tomato omelette with baked beans tonight because DP "needed" a McDonald's lunch, and lunch ingredients need repurposing.

We do occasionally have both these things for dinner, but normally when we have had a more substantial lunch.

mrsm43s · 09/03/2021 14:41

Well, whatever you eat at dinner time could be considered dinner. A tube of pringles followed by a pack of smarties if you like.

But on the basis that I would consider "dinner" to be the main, most substantial meal of the day, I don't think simply an omelette or a jacket potato would cut it. I'd want at least 2 -3 portions of veg contained within my main meal, and for it to be substantial enough to fulfil a good chunk of my calorie requirements for the day.

I'd consider a 2 egg cheese omelette served with a large mixed salad/ a variety of veg and chips or new potatoes as a reasonable main meal

I'd consider a jacket pot with butter on the side of meat /fish (or other protein) plus a variety of veg as a reasonable main meal.

I'd consider a large jacket potato with a generous topping of homemade chilli or similar served with a large mixed salad as a meal.

A simple omelette alone, or a simple jacket with cheese isn't substantial enough or nutritious enough to serve as the main meal of the day. Obviously as a one off - fine, but not routinely.

If DH was regularly serving up a simple omelette or jacket pot in the place of a full dinner on his days to cook, I'd consider him a lazy sod that was taking shortcuts and not providing a proper meal. But that would be on the basis that on my days I provide home cooked, nutritionally balanced full meals, and my expectation would be that he put the same effort in on his days. If every day of his was a shortcut "cheat" day, he'd be pushing the full responsibility of providing an adequate nutritionally balanced diet firmly onto me.

2021WillBeGreat · 09/03/2021 14:41

Now I am craving an omelette!

MintyMabel · 09/03/2021 14:42

Jacket potato with meats and salad is definitely a dinner. I wouldn’t eat an omelette if you paid me but if it was filled with meat and veg it would be a meal enough.

Esspee · 09/03/2021 14:48

Have to agree with your husband. Unless it is served with meat and veg it is not a dinner. Fine for lunch or supper but definitely not dinner.

honeylulu · 09/03/2021 14:49

If it has sufficient calories and bulk to fill you up then of course it can be dinner.

I would find a small jacket potato (250 cals?) and butter (80 cals?)on the light side (though sometimes a light meal is what you fancy). Jacket potato with beans and cheese, very filling. Or jacket with a steak and broccoli, ditto.

Some people have very rigid ideas about what are acceptable foods. My parents for example only consider food properly nutritious and valid if it is hot. i.e. Meat, veg and mashed potatoes. The same meat served as cold cuts, salad and crusty bread/butter is in their view "not having a main meal" even if the same calories and food groups are present.

My uni boyfriend would stuff himself all day with pasties, crisps and chocolate bars but would insist "I haven't eaten today" because he hadn't had a hot meal.

My husband refers to pizza as "something light" i.e. a low cal alternative to a roast dinner. Errrr, no.

fiendfyre · 09/03/2021 14:51

Those are dinners. Also dinner is Heinz hoops on toast, which we had last night. Lavish.

SilverGlassHare · 09/03/2021 14:51

It's a bit of a weird thing to eat together to my mind, if that's what he's complaining about (thought I'd happily eat a jacket with a quiche!). Omelettes in our house are eaten with crusty bread and a nice salad. Maybe chips at a pinch. I love an omelette.

Kimye4eva · 09/03/2021 14:51

A jacket potato is a side.

An omelette is brunch.

Why the Hmm Of course it can and I'm sure the OP knows this too. She is asking for other peoples perceptions of what dinner is in their homes which are just as valid as yours.
missingeu · 09/03/2021 15:12

If I'm cooking it and serving it a dinner time - then it's dinner.
If they don't like it or don't believe it's dinner, they can make their own.

Problem solved.
