Guess how old I am from the dolls house furniture (!)

Anyone want to furnish a rather retro dolls house.... ? I particularly love that the food that came with the fridge was two uncooked joints of meat (one piece definitely some rolled brisket for a pot roast, other I'm not entirely sure) Grin

Oh my gosh, that sink is so like the one we had in the flat. Some of it looks 60s.

Marmite27 · 08/03/2021 09:15

My guess that you are 41.

Sadik · 08/03/2021 09:23

A bit too young Marmite!

The house was one of those post-war new-builds that went sadly downhill, and was latterly inhabited by problem tenants and finally went to the tip demolished.

You’re 48 Wink

I had those exact ones, the table, oven, meat etc. Hadn’t thought of them in many, many years.

CatChant · 08/03/2021 09:27

Is this from your childhood @Sadik?

Dolls house food always reminds me of The Tale of Two Bad Mice with the mice trying to eat the food and then having a hissy fit when they discovered it was inedible. Grin

It is a wonderfully retro set, isn't it. It's made by a post-war English firm (now defunct) called Bartons. I think your collection dates from the 60s/early 70s. It was very solidly made for the most part so it tends to have lasted well.

You can see some similar pieces on this blog.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/03/2021 09:28

I'd say about 60.

DenisetheMenace · 08/03/2021 09:28

56

YetAnotherSpartacus · 08/03/2021 09:30

Yeah, in your 60s.

Furniture looks like it is from the early 60s so I'd guess you were born in the 50s, making you in your 60s.

It's a lovely set and well done for keeping it!

DaysAreGettingLongerNow · 08/03/2021 09:30

That’s fascinating @CatChant, thank you.

mamaweebeastie · 08/03/2021 09:34

Very similar to Lunby. I had one of their dolls houses in mid 80's. I bought one about 7 years ago to renovate. A labour of love & expense. I put it in hold when I had DD, so there is still a bit to do. Eventually it'll go towards her Uni (if that's her plan, she's 6 )

Sadik · 08/03/2021 09:34

Days is the closest so far! The whole house was furnished with the same decor as our house at the time (including orange carpet!). :)

DH made me a dolls house when I was 4, covered with that brick-effect paper and the roof with green tile effect. I didn't have a proper set of furniture for it, just a few random bits and bobs I made chests of drawers from matchboxes etc, and a family from pipe cleaners.Grin

SoMuchToBits · 08/03/2021 09:39

I'd say you are early 60s. The furniture looks very 1960s (I'm 59 so remember this stuff).

I can see some Playmobil people in your second photo. They wouldn't have been the original occupants though, as Playmobil was only introduced in 1974!

Sadik · 08/03/2021 09:41

Yes, the dinosaurs & playmo were from my dc!

Did you have original dolls who lived in the house? And if so, what were they like?

BorisandHarriet · 08/03/2021 09:55

I would have guessed the same as @DaysAreGettingLongerNow. We had the exact same fridge / cooker and food in dolls house in the 70s.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 08/03/2021 09:59

I recognise some of these pieces! I'm over 60, mind you, so they weren't retro, they were original.
My doll's house also had brick effect external walls and green tile effect roof.

ginghamstarfish · 08/03/2021 09:59

Looks like 70s style, so early 50s?

MatildaTheCat · 08/03/2021 10:01

I had that sitting room suite. Oh how I’d love a dolls house now.

Sadik · 08/03/2021 10:02

Spot on @ginghamstarfish - I'm 51 :)

I think the dolls I had with the house were never very satisfactory, they weren't quite the right size for anything & I mainly played with it just with the furniture & no inhabitants.

It did indeed have brick effect external walls, 'tiled' roof + a little chimney that always fell off.

My dad made it for me, & I'm kind of sad it fell apart eventually, but it did get very well used before that stage!

What a novel thread OP! Much better than the usual 'how old am I' BS.

It looks like a very miniature Mad Men set. Smile

BlackeyedSusan · 08/03/2021 10:35

Orange carpet is the 70s

BlackeyedSusan · 08/03/2021 10:37

We had an orange brown yellow toddler let loose with paints and brushes job to replace the black grey squared 50s stuff.

Sadik · 08/03/2021 10:53

We also had orange radiators & an orange piano in the 70s (real house not dolls house). Very bright ....
