DH and I had a few wines last night and fell down a YouTube rabbit hole listening to 90s music. We then got into a heated debate about what the best song of the 90s was.

My vote - Set You Free by NTrance

His vote - Live Forever by Oasis

For clarity, we were both mid teens during this decade.

What's your stand out song of the 90s?

I can't pick just one!

Diggin on you by tlc.
Weak by skunk anansie
Champagne supernova by Oasis.
Disco 2000 , pulp.
Original nutter , shy fx.
Informer , snow.

A bit of a weird mix there but I was 10 in 1990 so my taste changed a lot in that decade!

JimmyJabs · 07/03/2021 05:24

I'm posting before rtft, so it will be interesting to see if I manage to come up with anything original, but:

La Tristessa Durera by the Manics
Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead O'Connor
Animal Nitrate by Suede
Underground by Ben Folds Five
Supervixen by Garbage

No doubt I'll come up with loads more immediately after I hit Post, and will read through the rest of the thread going "Yes! How did I forget that one?"

On that note, Yes by McAlmont and Butler 😁

JimmyJabs · 07/03/2021 05:41

Already thought of more!

Justified and Ancient by the KLF
Lost Myself by the Longpigs
If by the Bluetones
This is How it Feels by the Inspiral Carpets

I don't think all of my choices are necessarily objectively great songs but you can't get away from the distorting effects of nostalgia on threads like this. I started the 90s as a 10 year old and finished it as a final year student, so my feelings about stuff from the early 90s is linked to a completely different set of memories than the stuff from 1999. From the uncomplicated life of a child at primary school to a proper adult with a love life and everything!

@GlitchStitch

Independent Love Song by Scarlett

Absolutely love this song.

felulageller · 07/03/2021 08:00

Bitter sweet symphony or the drugs don't work by the Verve

Whatever or don't look back in anger by oasis

Good riddance by green day

mammmamia · 07/03/2021 08:09

@JimmyJabs same for me, totally agree with what you said

wanderlnst · 07/03/2021 08:11

Say My Name - Destiny's Child
Baby One More Time - Britney
Blue (Da Ba Dee) - Eiffel 65
Park life - Blur

Gunpowder · 07/03/2021 08:14

This thread has made me realise how much music I listened to in the ‘90s!

IsabelleSE19 · 07/03/2021 08:17

Inspired by this thread I listened to Blissed by Jesus Jones for probably the first time in 25 years. It plastered a smile all over my face but also gave me a very poignant feeling to think about the person I was when I last heard it.

Love loads of these on the thread, especially Stone Roses and Prodigy (I have eclectic tastes!) but one of mine that hasn't come up is The Player by The Levellers. Also Liberty Song, Sell Out and Men-an-Tol by the Levellers

InsideNumberNine · 07/03/2021 08:19

Ha, I went to sleep and this thread blew up! Honourable mention to whoever said:

Epic by Faith No More
Children of the Night and
This Summer by Squeeze

All going on my house cleaning playlist this morning !!

let's all meet up in the year 2000
Won't it be strange when we're all fully grown?

That lyric makes me quite emotional!

ISpeakJive · 07/03/2021 08:24

Haven’t read the full thread but for me it would have to be:

Mr Loverman -Shabba Ranks
People Everyday - Arrested Development
Here comes the hotstepper- Ini Kamoze
She’s got that Vibe - R Kelly

IsabelleSE19 · 07/03/2021 08:30

Thinking about it, whenever I do a 90s playlist, the song I pretty much always include is Step On by Happy Mondays. So that's probably the song of the decade for me.

WorzelleeJohnson · 07/03/2021 08:30

D-ream Your the Best Thing

sHREDDIES19 · 07/03/2021 08:30

Wow what a decade for music! I went into it as a 12 year old and my favourite 90s tune (which by the way is a very mean thing to make someone do😆) has to be Roads by Portishead. So beautiful, timeless and spine tingling.

mammmamia · 07/03/2021 08:36

I just asked Alexa to play 90s pop as a PP said. The first song is Wilson Philips - Hold On. What a tune!

23PissOffAvenueWF · 07/03/2021 08:38

You Don’t Know Me - Armand Van Helden.

chuffoff · 07/03/2021 08:38

To the end - Blur
Creep - Radiohead
Slide Away - Oasis
Just when you're thinking things over - Charlatans
How soon is now - the smiths
How do you sleep - Stone Roses (although I'm feeling so weird about my love of the stone roses after all this Ian Brown covid madness. He was my hero and I once got to meet him Sad)
Unfinished Sympathy - Massive Attack is unsurpassed though.

Thurlow · 07/03/2021 08:38

Another vote for Yes by McAlmott and Butler - I bloody love that song.

supersonicginandtonic · 07/03/2021 08:38

@NerrSnerr the casualty song 🙈 my family still love singing that at the end of weddings 😂

DrMaryMalone · 07/03/2021 08:39

So many good songs to choose from. My early teens were in mid to late 90s and my tastes were mixed to say the least! If I had to pick a top 5 I’d go with

Common People - Pulp
Set you Free - NTrance
The Bartender and The Thief - Stereophonics
Ready to Go - Republica
No Good (Start the Dance) - Prodigy

But also a special mention to happy hardcore from under 18 foam parties. If you were Scottish you may have had a Bonkers compilation cd for recreating raves in your bedroom!

Labobo · 07/03/2021 08:39

@mommybunny

You Only Get What You Give, New Radicals Better Man, Pearl Jam BitterSweet Symphony, The Verve What’s Up, 4 Non-Blondes Constant Craving, kd lang

Love all of the above, but I think my personal favourite is Rain King, Counting Crowd

I rediscovered What's Up the other day and played it non stop. Such a great song.

I agree Common People is probably the best 90s song but I love Don't Look Back in Anger.

Labobo · 07/03/2021 08:41

Me too. Apparently they did, too. The girl he wrote the song about met up with him. Must be lovely to be Jarvis Cocker's muse.
Cao77 · 07/03/2021 08:50

Stupid girl - Garbage
Erotica - Madonna
Playing with knives - Bizarre inc
3 am Eternal - KLF

Sooo many to choose from!

EggyPegg · 07/03/2021 08:52

@mammmamia

I just asked Alexa to play 90s pop as a PP said. The first song is Wilson Philips - Hold On. What a tune!
I was just about to mention Wilson Phillips and Hold On. That song got a much deserved revival thanks to the film Bridesmaids.

Like other PPs, the 90s was my coming of age decade. (I tuned 18 in 2000) so my tastes evolved over the years. I do still have an eclectic taste in music and I think growing up in the 90s influenced that as there was such a mix of genres available to us.
